PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

Map sources and limits

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 3, 2026.

Sources checked October 13, 2026. Based on official collection descriptions and published access instructions; no staff confirmation or onsite inspection.

Search the place and the connection.

Muskingum County collections reach beyond Zanesville: try Putnam, New Concord, a congregation, a pottery company, or a veteran’s local connection. A useful collection can also be held outside the county, as the John Glenn Papers show.

The genealogy room and Schneider veterans archive are two routes through the library system. Read each collection’s coverage and access notes before treating it as a complete record set.

STOP 01 / LOCAL FAMILY RESEARCH / VOLUNTEER ASSISTANCE

Muskingum County Chapter OGS Genealogy Library

Start with the local researchers who know the county’s collections.

What you can find

The library system hosts the volunteer-operated Muskingum County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society. Muskingum County History explicitly directs family-history inquiries to this chapter.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use genealogy@muskingumlibrary.org or call the library system at 740-453-0391 to ask about holdings and access at John McIntire Library, 220 North Fifth Street, Zanesville. The library page lists chapter hours; confirm before visiting.

A question you can ask

Which local collection covers [family, township, and years], and is there an index or record reference I can consult?

Keep in mind

The chapter’s own website returned an access error during review. Use the library’s working contact route. Confirm specific holdings rather than assuming all county records are available here.

STOP 02 / LOCAL MILITARY HISTORY

Schneider WWII Muskingum Veterans Archive

Look for the hometown record alongside the federal service file.

What you can find

The library’s genealogy page identifies a dedicated Schneider WWII Muskingum Veterans Archive. Its research-database description says the collection documents military service of local men and women during World War II.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Begin with the library’s genealogy page. The archive subpage did not load during review, so ask the genealogy staff about the person and current digital or onsite access.

A question you can ask

Is [veteran] represented in the Schneider archive, and what dated original material supports the entry?

Keep in mind

The collection is a local research lead, not a complete roster or a substitute for a federal service file. Current item-level access and exact coverage were not verified.

STOP 03 / DIARIES / PRESBYTERIAN HISTORY / COMMUNITY PAPERS

Muskingum University’s Social & Historical Archive

Your ancestor did not have to be a student.

What you can find

The university archive preserves early Appalachian Ohio diaries, ephemera, genealogy, and Presbyterian church and college history alongside institutional records. Its December 2024 finding aid lists collections by box, subject, folder, and contents.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Search the finding aid for a surname, congregation, organization, or place. Request specific boxes and folders from library@muskingum.edu. Access is by appointment and limited hours; unrestricted material is available to the public at no charge.

A question you can ask

May I consult [box and folder] concerning [person or congregation], and what restrictions or copying terms apply?

Keep in mind

The finding aid describes holdings rather than supplying all document images. Commercial reproduction requires clearance, and some collections have access restrictions.

STOP 04 / RESEARCH LIBRARY / ABOLITIONIST COMMUNITY

Putnam Underground Railroad Interpretive Center, Stone Academy

Follow the congregation and neighbors behind a local story.

What you can find

The center describes a resource and research library, exhibits, and ongoing study of Underground Railroad and abolitionist activity in Putnam and Zanesville. Its identified sites include Putnam Presbyterian Church and homes associated with the Guthrie, Nye, and Nelson T. Gant families.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Contact Muskingum County History at 740-454-9500 about research-library access and a specific subject. Stone Academy is at 115 Jefferson Street, Zanesville. The society also shares vintage collection photographs through its contact-page links.

A question you can ask

Which cited records support [person’s] connection to [congregation or abolitionist activity], and may I consult the research material?

Keep in mind

An exhibit or house tradition is a lead; ask for evidence behind the interpretation. The society refers general genealogy inquiries to the OGS chapter.

STOP 05 / ONLINE OBJECT CATALOG / MAKERS / INDUSTRIAL HISTORY

Zanesville Museum of Art: American Art Pottery

A pottery object can lead to a designer, employer, or donor.

What you can find

The museum’s pottery gallery discusses Weller, Owens, Roseville, and McCoy and the regional industry’s decorators, designers, mold-makers, and potters. Its collection page links a searchable online object catalog.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Browse the pottery gallery and follow its online collection links to a maker, company or object. For an employment question, ask whether the museum knows of company papers, worker photographs or records covering your dates. Collection-page links rechecked October 25, 2026.

A question you can ask

Does this object’s catalog or accession file identify [maker or donor], and what supports the attribution?

Keep in mind

An object attribution does not by itself establish an ancestor’s employment. Personnel or payroll holdings were not verified. Roseville village spans Perry and Muskingum counties; distinguish the village, company name and factory location for the period you are researching.

STOP 06 / FAMILY CORRESPONDENCE / PHOTOGRAPHS / ASSOCIATES

John Glenn Papers at Ohio State University

A New Concord connection may survive outside the county.

What you can find

Ohio State’s finding aid describes John Glenn’s family, military, NASA, and public-service papers. It identifies family genealogy files and correspondence and describes the 1962 hometown events in New Concord. Selected material is digitized.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the finding aid’s names and series descriptions to identify a folder or event, then ask Ohio State Special Collections about access and copies. These records are held in Columbus rather than Muskingum County.

A question you can ask

Does [series or event file] contain correspondence or photographs involving [person or organization] in New Concord around [year]?

Keep in mind

A famous person’s archive may document associates, but it is not a county-wide genealogy index. Separate family correspondence or compiled genealogy from contemporary evidence.

STOP 07 / DEEDS / PLATS / EARLY INDEXES

Muskingum County Recorder’s historical indexes

Use the historical indexes when a modern search misses an owner.

What you can find

The Recorder describes holdings dating to 1803. Its electronic index start dates vary: deeds 1977, mortgages 1976, leases 1981, and plats 1800. The office directs earlier searches to its Historical Indexes tab and OIB training sheet.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Begin on the official Recorder page and read the index instructions. Preserve grantor, grantee, instrument type, volume, and page. Ask 740-455-7107 or recorder@muskingumcounty.org about obtaining older images.

A question you can ask

How can I obtain the complete deed at [volume/page], and are related transfers or plats available?

Keep in mind

An index start date is not a guarantee that every original image is online. Compare historical tracts and owners rather than relying solely on a modern parcel.

STOP 08 / ESTATES / MARRIAGES / NATURALIZATION

Muskingum County Probate Court

Read the estate file for relationships and named associates.

What you can find

The court lists wills, estates, and marriages from 1804 onward, birth and death records for 1867–1908, and naturalization records from the early 1800s. Later vital records are referred to the health department.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Send a focused request to probate@muskingumcounty.org with exact names and an approximate date. Mailed requests should include a self-addressed stamped envelope. Ask for the complete relevant file and current copying terms.

A question you can ask

Can I obtain the complete estate file for [person and death date], including distributions and supporting papers?

Keep in mind

The court requires names and dates for research requests. Its coverage description does not establish that every file survives intact or is online. Earlier births and deaths may appear in other kinds of records.

FOLLOW THE RECORD

Collection details and practical access

Research checked October 14, 2026. The notes below supplement the original guide. Catalog dates describe holdings; online access and copying arrangements can differ. No requests or purchases were made.

University manuscripts: request a box and folder

Collection and coverage

The December 2024 finding aid lists New Concord Federated Club secretary/minute books: box 5025, folder 1, 1913–1920; folder 2, 1920–1932; folder 3, 1933–1942; box 5022, folder 2, May 6, 1947–February 5, 1957. Student WWII Service Information is in boxes 1016–1018 and 1254–1264. American Legion Post 251, box 5023, folder 15, includes 1940/1944 banquet programs and a 1944–1945 directory.

How to access it

Search the finding-aid PDF by surname or organization, then email library@muskingum.edu with the box/folder citation. Public research is free by appointment, during limited hours, with supervised access.

Gaps and points to confirm

A finding aid is not file images. The 1942–1947 gap is not proof of loss; exact student-service series dates remain unstated. Restricted material is excluded. Confirm scanning and commercial-use permissions; the library describes staff scanning at 20 cents and staff photocopying at 27 cents per side.

Historical land and probate requests

Collection and coverage

The Recorder holds land records from 1803, but its modern index begins in 1977. Use Historical Indexes for earlier references. Probate holds births/deaths 1867–1908 and wills, estates and marriages from 1804 onward.

How to access it

For land, choose the surname and historical index range, obtain book/page, then choose record type and book/page to find the document. For probate, supply exact names and dates to probate@muskingumcounty.org or mail a stamped return envelope to 401 Main Street, first floor, Zanesville; mailed copies require prepayment.

Gaps and points to confirm

The land viewer failed during research; image availability was not tested. The office’s 1803 holdings date is not an online-image start. Probate does not conduct broad ancestry searches; no court birth/death registration before 1867 is listed. Confirm copy fees.

Library website migration and veterans access

Collection and coverage

The library system’s genealogy route changed with its October 1 website move. The Schneider WWII archive has a separate page on the new site.

How to access it

Use the new genealogy gateway to ask staff for the Schneider collection and the specific veteran, interview or source item.

Gaps and points to confirm

The Schneider page could not be retrieved during research. That is an access uncertainty, not evidence that the collection has disappeared. General Ancestry Library Edition descriptions must not be attributed to Schneider holdings.

Try one question: what connected a family to an employer or community?

  1. Write down the person, locality, date range, and occupation or organization.
  2. Search the university finding aid, pottery catalog, or local veterans collection for that connection.
  3. Record the creator, item reference, date, and basis for each identification.
  4. Compare the lead with land, probate, marriage, and census evidence.
  5. Ask for the original document or full file when an index or interpretation matters to the conclusion.

A museum object, a research-library file, and an original court record provide different kinds of evidence. Preserve their context and any conflicting information.

MUSKINGUM COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Muskingum County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed October 26, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Keep in mind: Inventory updated 2012; current holdings have not been reconfirmed by staff. Inclusive dates are not proof of continuous coverage or online image access.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.

How to search, request and interpret this collection

Coverage and gaps
1919; 1923. Box 5021 folder 15; also undated photograph. No continuous 1919–1923 series.

How to search
Inspect the 1919 souvenir and 1923 program separately; record page and role. Do not date the accompanying photograph from proximity alone.

How to retrieve it
