PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

  • Stop 1, Stop 2: Garnet A. Wilson Public Library

Map sources and limits

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 3, 2026.

Sources checked October 23, 2026. Based on public institutional descriptions, not staff confirmation or an onsite visit. Confirm current access before traveling.

Bring one focused question.

Start with a name or place, approximate years, and the fact you want to establish. These are selected research starting points. A catalog, index, museum exhibit and original record provide different kinds of evidence.

STOP 01 / LIBRARY / LOCAL HISTORY

Garnet A. Wilson Library Pike County Room

Plan a focused search before traveling to Waverly.

What you can find

The Pike County Room offers local newspapers, census material and selected government records on microfilm, plus regional history and genealogy reference material.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the library catalog and genealogy page to identify titles, then contact the library through its Hours and Locations page to confirm room access and equipment.

A question you can ask

Which microfilm or local-history titles cover [surname, township and years]?

Keep in mind

The overview is not a complete inventory. Confirm specific records and copying arrangements before a trip.

STOP 02 / ONLINE / COMMUNITY COLLECTIONS

Pike newspaper, yearbook and WWI photo routes

Add school and wartime context to a family timeline.

What you can find

The library links a yearbook archive, World War I photo collection and newspapers including Waverly Watchman, 1867–1896 and 1912–1975, and Atomizer, 1952–1955.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Enter through the library's genealogy page, choose the collection, then browse by date or title as well as surname.

A question you can ask

Is [school year, newspaper issue or soldier] represented in the digital collection?

Keep in mind

These are digital routes from the same library, not additional institutions. Listed spans do not guarantee every issue or person. Check item identification and source details.

STOP 03 / COURT / ARCHIVED IMAGES

Pike County Probate Court archives

Browse historical index books when a name search misses an estate.

What you can find

The court lists marriages from 1815 onward, birth/death records for 1867–1909, and estates and guardianships from 1815 onward. Pre-2004 estate and guardianship index books are available through Archived Images.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Request cases at probatecourt@pikecounty.oh.gov or call 740-947-2560. Confirm visits to 230 Waverly Plaza, Suite 600. Ask for a cost estimate; available online copies may be printed without charge.

A question you can ask

Please identify the estate packet for [name, approximate year] from the general index.

Keep in mind

Scanning is ongoing; the court warns some requests take at least five business days. Staff research assistance is minimal, paper-file access is usually unavailable, and adoption records are closed.

STOP 04 / MUSEUM / CANAL COMMUNITY

Pike Heritage Museum

Explore Waverly's earlier community inside a surviving church building.

What you can find

The museum displays material from different periods of Pike County history in an 1859 former German Evangelical church. The building retains a 1917 pipe organ and stands in the Waverly Canal Historic District.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

110 South Market Street, Waverly; 740-947-5281. Ohio's tourism listing gives weekend afternoon hours; call to confirm the current season and any research appointment.

A question you can ask

Which objects or photographs document [community, occupation or family period]?

Keep in mind

The visitor description does not establish church-register custody or a searchable family archive. A former church building does not itself prove the museum holds its congregation's records.

STOP 05 / INDUSTRIAL HISTORY / WORKER MEMORIES

Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant Virtual Museum

Follow families connected to Pike County's Cold War workforce.

What you can find

DOE describes online photographs, worker interviews and plant newsletters reaching back to the early 1950s. Despite its Portsmouth name, the plant site is in Pike County.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Enter through DOE's Portsmouth Background page and follow the Virtual Museum link. Browse newsletters and interviews by period and workplace context; retain the exact item citation.

A question you can ask

Which newsletters or interviews describe [department, occupation or years]?

Keep in mind

This is a public historical collection, not a complete personnel-file service. Oral recollections need corroboration, and a missing name does not rule out employment.

STOP 06 / LAND / INDEX SEARCH

Pike County Recorder land records

Locate property transfers using names and document references.

What you can find

The official search offers grantor/grantee, subdivision, document type and number fields, with separate index-only and full-text options.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the Pike, Ohio public search portal. For older coverage and copy help call the recorder at 740-947-2622, as listed by county offices.

A question you can ask

What historical years are included online, and which older index should I use for [name and date]?

Keep in mind

The search's certified-through date describes recent processing, not the earliest records included. OCR can miss handwriting; verify the document image and ask about older volumes.

Keep the evidence and the next step.

Save the repository, collection title, dates, box or volume and page, link, and what you searched. Follow an index entry to the full record. Keep uncertain identifications separate from established relationships.

PIKE COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Pike County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed October 26, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

COMMUNITY MEMORY

Community history groups and research leads

Local communities can help identify a place, photograph or possible source. These independently run groups are community leads, not catalogued archives or BWP partners. Facebook identities and visible access information checked October 25, 2026. Verification here concerns the group, not the accuracy of its members’ posts. No groups were joined and no messages were sent.
