PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

Other guide stops not shown on this map

These stops may be online collections, shared repositories or locations not yet confirmed for mapping. Follow the collection’s access instructions.

Map sources and limits

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 3, 2026.

Sources checked October 23, 2026. Based on public institutional descriptions, not staff confirmation or an onsite visit. Confirm current access before traveling.

Bring one focused question.

Start with a name or place, approximate years, and the fact you want to establish. These are selected research starting points. A catalog, index, museum exhibit and original record provide different kinds of evidence.

STOP 01 / FAMILY FILES / ORIGINAL MARRIAGES / FUNERAL CARDS

Preble County Local History and Genealogy Room

Look beyond a surname search to the folder behind it.

What you can find

The library lists Bible records, funeral cards, family files, First Families documentation, original marriage certificates from 1808 onward, local newspapers from 1875 onward and county high-school yearbooks. Its focus includes places residents came from and moved to.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Contact pcroom@preblelibrary.org or 937-456-4250 at 450 South Barron Street, Eaton. Published hours are Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Ancestry Library Edition is in-library only.

A question you can ask

Does a family folder, funeral card or original marriage certificate cover [name and year], and what source citation accompanies it?

Keep in mind

The listed start dates describe collections, not complete coverage. Family files and lineage submissions are research leads that need comparison with original records.

STOP 02 / TAX LISTS / ORAL HISTORIES / HISTORIC BUILDINGS

Preble County Library digital records and building inventory

Search the house, tax list and local story as well as the person.

What you can find

The library's ResCarta search separates funeral and cemetery indexes, marriage records, military records, Ohio Historic Inventory, oral histories, county deaths, newspapers, tax lists and vital records. The genealogy hub also links a historical building inventory and Ohio Memory collection.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Begin at the library genealogy hub for both its static database and growing digital collection. In ResCarta, narrow to a collection and date range, then try spelling variants. Ask the genealogy room for help locating the underlying volume or image.

A question you can ask

Which title, page and original record series does this search result represent?

Keep in mind

This is a digital route into the library's holdings, not a separate archive. Search results and OCR can miss handwriting or damaged print. An online absence does not establish that a record never existed.

STOP 03 / VILLAGE NEWSPAPERS / NAME FILES / PHOTOGRAPHS

Eleanor I. Jones Archives in Camden

A village archive can preserve the details a county history leaves out.

What you can find

Camden Archives holds hundreds of historic photographs and thousands of files arranged by person, organization or recurring event. Its newspaper collecting began with the Camden Herald (1877–1880), Camden Gazette (1880–1892) and Preble County News (from 1902). The library-hosted page links digitized newspapers, photograph inventories and local histories.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Visit Camden Town Hall, 56 West Central Avenue, or call 937-452-2003. Published hours are Tuesday and Thursday 1–4 p.m. and the first Saturday 10 a.m.–2 p.m.; other times require arrangement. Confirm volunteer availability.

A question you can ask

Is [person, business, church or school] indexed in the name files or newspaper collection, and can you identify the dated original?

Keep in mind

The archive describes some missing newspaper issues. Its online photograph gallery is a selection; ask about the full inventory. Recollections and later local histories need corroboration.

STOP 04 / HISTORIC FARMSTEAD / OBJECTS / ORAL HISTORY

Preble County Historical Society and Nature Reserve

Connect a family story to the places and objects around it.

What you can find

The society's historic farmstead includes a circa-1860 farmhouse, an 1813 log home, bank barn, smokehouse and exhibit hall. An earlier streaming page described oral histories, podcasts and county-history films; that page was unavailable during the October 24 link check. Ask staff about current access. The historic-plaque program provides another route into named places.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Contact the History and Collections staff at brittany@preblecountyhistoricalsociety.com or call 937-787-4256 before visiting 7693 Swartsel Road, Eaton. Consult the homepage's seasonal schedule and arrange collection research separately from a tour.

A question you can ask

Do you hold a documented object, photograph or oral-history interview connected with [family, community or occupation], and what is its provenance?

Keep in mind

Pages show different seasonal hours, so confirm directly. Museum exhibits and films do not establish that a complete surname archive or business record series survives. No comprehensive online collection catalog was verified.

STOP 05 / ESTATES / NATURALIZATIONS / EARLY VITAL RECORDS

Preble County Microfilm Office

Ask for the complete file, not only the indexed name.

What you can find

The county lists estate files from 1808 through closed cases, marriages 1808–1996, wills 1816–1961, births and deaths 1867–1908, naturalizations 1860–1899 and commissioners' journals 1808–1887. Its inventory also identifies plat, mortgage, deed and inventory/sale-bill material.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Contact edavis@prebco.org or 937-456-8122 at 101 East Main Street, Eaton. Published hours are weekdays 8 a.m.–4 p.m.; call ahead because lunch closures occur. Walk-in, mail and email assistance are offered, with copy charges.

A question you can ask

Can you locate the complete [estate or naturalization] file for [name and date], including all surviving pages and its volume or case reference?

Keep in mind

For criminal, divorce or civil Common Pleas cases, the office directs researchers to obtain case numbers from the Clerk of Courts first. Inventory ranges do not guarantee every individual file survives.

STOP 06 / REGIONAL ARCHIVE / CHILDREN'S HOME / GOVERNMENT RECORDS

Wright State University Special Collections and Archives

The surviving record may be outside the county.

What you can find

Wright State explicitly includes Preble among counties with children's-home records in its holdings. Its genealogy guide also identifies published Preble birth and death records and regional census material. Use the local-government collection guides to identify the precise series before requesting it.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Contact library-archives@wright.edu or 937-775-2092. The visiting page currently carries a reading-room closure notice for facility upgrades. Ask about remote assistance and current access before traveling; ordinary research appointments and offsite retrieval require advance planning.

A question you can ask

Which Preble County children's-home series covers [person and dates], what restrictions apply, and can staff provide a copy or appointment?

Keep in mind

Children's-home placement does not by itself prove orphanhood or adoption. Wright State states that it does not hold adoption records. Exact Preble series dates and access restrictions must be confirmed in the finding aid or with staff.

Keep the evidence and the next step.

Save the repository, collection title, dates, box or volume and page, link, and what you searched. Follow an index entry to the full record. Keep uncertain identifications separate from established relationships.

PREBLE COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Preble County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed October 26, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

COMMUNITY MEMORY

Community history groups and research leads

Local communities can help identify a place, photograph or possible source. These independently run groups are community leads, not catalogued archives or BWP partners. Keep the contributor, date, basis for an identification and original source together. Ask permission before republishing photographs or private contributions.

Facebook identities and visible access information checked October 25, 2026. Verification here concerns the group, not the accuracy of its members’ posts. No groups were joined and no messages were sent.

Family Bibles, funeral cards and lineage files

The in-house inventory identifies Bible records, funeral cards, First Families documentation, family files and family books. The hub provides separate surname lists for folders and books.

How to access it

Request both surname lists and ask staff about citations in the underlying files.

Evidence limit: No collection dates published. Donated genealogies and lineage applications require independent verification.

Original marriage certificates and school yearbooks

Original marriage certificates begin in 1808; county high-school yearbooks offer a separate route to students, classmates and activities.

How to access it

Ask for the original certificate and the specific school/year before visiting.

Evidence limit: Open-ended marriage start is not complete coverage. No school-specific yearbook ranges were verified.

Camden newspaper indexes and microfilm

Collected papers include Camden Herald 1877–1880, Camden Gazette 1880–1892 and Preble County News beginning 1902. A linked newspaper portal provides digitized editions.

How to access it

Call 937-452-2003; Tuesday/Thursday 1–4 and first Saturday 10–2, otherwise arrange a visit.

Evidence limit: Some issues are missing. The News end date is unspecified; do not turn its open start into a complete planner span.

Camden school, organization and photograph files

Thousands of alphabetical person, organization and event files complement historic photographs. Online selections link a scanned-photo inventory and the 1968 sesquicentennial book, including school history and a business directory.

How to access it

Use the archive contact form or phone; request file headings and photograph numbers.

Evidence limit: Selected online images are not the full archive; a commemorative history is secondary evidence. No file-wide dates verified.
