PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

Other guide stops not shown on this map

These stops may be online collections, shared repositories or locations not yet confirmed for mapping. Follow the collection’s access instructions.

Map sources and limits

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 3, 2026.

Sources checked October 23, 2026. Based on public institutional descriptions, not staff confirmation or an onsite visit. Confirm current access before traveling.

Bring one focused question.

Start with a name or place, approximate years, and the fact you want to establish. These are selected research starting points. A catalog, index, museum exhibit and original record provide different kinds of evidence.

STOP 01 / DIRECTORIES / LOCAL FILES

MRCPL Sherman Room

Track a household between census years.

What you can find

Holdings include city directories from 1858, telephone directories from 1904, county directories, clipping and photograph files, historical atlases and local business annual reports.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Contact genealogy@mrcpl.org with the address or business and date range. Confirm Sherman Room hours separately from general library hours.

A question you can ask

Which directory or annual report places this person at this address?

Keep in mind

Materials do not circulate. Directory entries need corroboration when several residents share a name.

STOP 02 / NATURALIZATION / CHILDREN’S HOME

Sherman Room institutional microfilm

Look beyond the census for an institutional paper trail.

What you can find

Microfilm includes Probate Court naturalizations for 1852–1906, Children’s Home indentures for 1880–1917 and county commissioners’ journals for 1872–1903.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Request the named series and a narrow date range; the library accepts assistance and copy inquiries.

A question you can ask

Does the indenture register identify a placement or receiving household?

Keep in mind

An indenture is not an adoption record. Ask staff about legibility and copying before relying on a remote extract.

STOP 03 / CIVIL CASES / CORONER / TAX

OGS Lyle H. West Archives: court records

Find the underlying dispute or inquest behind a short index entry.

What you can find

The Richland holdings list identifies civil case packets for 1848–1930, coroner’s inquests for 1885–1957, naturalization records and historical tax volumes.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use OGS finding aids and contact the Bellville library before requesting archival boxes. Public access and a lookup-copy service are available; nonmember admission applies.

A question you can ask

Can you locate the original packet associated with this case number?

Keep in mind

The holdings list is abbreviated and older. Verify current retrieval, coverage and restrictions with staff.

STOP 04 / INTERMENTS / CONGREGATIONS

OGS Richland cemetery and church collections

Separate a cemetery register from a later gravestone transcription.

What you can find

Listed sources include Mansfield Cemetery interments for 1852–1979, Mt. Hope cemetery records for 1885–1979, and Sacred Heart Church, Shelby, records for 1844–1924.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Identify the exact church or cemetery and consult the OGS catalog before visiting or requesting copies.

A question you can ask

Does the original register supply a burial date or relationship absent from the stone?

Keep in mind

Formats vary among original archives, microfilm and published transcriptions; cite the version actually consulted.

STOP 05 / BLACK FAMILY HISTORY / PHOTOGRAPHS

Mansfield Memorial Museum: Sarah Daisy Barker Thomas/Corley Collection

Explore a named family collection rather than a generic surname search.

What you can find

Documents and photographs in this collection trace Black families from before the Civil War into the 1930s, including material connected to Idlewild, Michigan.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Contact the museum with names and the collection title to arrange a research inquiry and ask about image permissions.

A question you can ask

Does this collection document a connection between these families or communities?

Keep in mind

The collection concerns particular families and is not a comprehensive register of Black residents. Reuse requires attention to museum permissions.

STOP 06 / HOUSE HISTORY / FAMILY OBJECTS

Oak Hill Cottage and Richland County Historical Society

Use a documented household to understand nineteenth-century material life.

What you can find

The house preserves Jones family clothing, photographs, furniture and personal belongings. Its documented history connects the Robinson and Jones households with Mansfield.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Check seasonal tour arrangements and ask the society in advance about a targeted historical inquiry.

A question you can ask

Is there documentation identifying this object, photograph or household connection?

Keep in mind

A house-museum tour is not general archival access. Do not assume the society holds every Richland family’s papers.

Keep the evidence and the next step.

Save the repository, collection title, dates, box or volume and page, link, and what you searched. Follow an index entry to the full record. Keep uncertain identifications separate from established relationships.

RICHLAND COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Richland County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed October 26, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

microfilm

Probate declarations of intention

Listed years: 1852–1906.

Source, access and coverage limits

Ask the Ohio Genealogical Society library in Bellville to confirm the reel and current access before visiting, or inquire about its look-up/copy service.

Keep in mind: Selected microfilm holdings in an older inventory, updated 2012. These endpoints do not prove complete registration, every surviving volume, or online image access.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.

Additional collection references

Official catalog descriptions checked October 25, 2026. These notes identify research routes, not completed name-level searches.

Ohio State Reformatory conduct and admission records

Ohio History Connection identifies historical conduct and admission books covering 1896–1968. Photographs may survive in Bertillon cards for 1901–1921 or photograph books for 1913–1982, with gaps.

How to begin: Use Ohio History Connection's prisoner-research instructions before visiting its Archives & Library in Columbus. A prisoner number and approximate entry date help locate records arranged by number or admission chronology.

What remains uncertain: This is a state archive research route for the Mansfield institution. Ohio History Connection says staff no longer provide prison-record research or copy-order services; unrestricted records may be consulted onsite. A photograph is not guaranteed.

COMMUNITY MEMORY

Community history groups and research leads

Local communities can help identify a place, photograph or possible source. These independently run groups are community leads, not catalogued archives or BWP partners. Keep the contributor, date, basis for an identification and original source together. Ask permission before republishing photographs or private contributions.

Facebook identities and visible access information checked October 25, 2026. Verification here concerns the group, not the accuracy of its members’ posts. No groups were joined and no messages were sent.

Mansfield Memory Project

Public Facebook group

The Mansfield Memory Project focuses on community photographs and memories. Use it as a lead for identifying a place or image, then check the identification against records.

Access and rules: Facebook identifies this as a public, visible group; sign-in may still be requested. Read the current rules before posting.

Verification limits: The group identity and visible access information were checked. Member contributions and specific holdings were not independently verified. Ask permission before reusing an image or private contribution.

Children’s Home indentures and county commissioners

Microfilm includes Children’s Home Record of Indentures, 1880–1917, and commissioners’ journals, 1872–1903. These offer institutional placement and local-government leads.

How to access it

Email genealogy@mrcpl.org or call 419-521-3115; material is noncirculating.

Evidence limit: Indentures are a specific record series, not a complete census of children in care.

Mansfield clerk reports and high-school commencement programs

Special collections include City of Mansfield Clerk annual reports, Mansfield Senior High School commencement programs and World War II envelopes. These can connect people with civic and school settings.

How to access it

Ask for the relevant year and an inventory; consult in the Sherman Room.

Evidence limit: Policy confirms collection types but not dated runs. Library is not the legal records repository for city or school offices.

Township justice dockets and school records

Holdings include Jefferson Township justice Jehu Young’s docket, Sandusky Township criminal docket, and Jefferson/Washington Township school records.

How to access it

Ask for the format and series before visiting; copy service available.

Evidence limit: Some holdings are books or photocopies, not original case packets.

Mortuary records and women’s organizations

Beelman Mortuary and William M. Jones Funeral Home records supplement death evidence. Women’s Christian Temperance Union microfilm and women’s club archives provide organizational context.

How to access it

Request named collection and index or abstract; nonmembers pay daily admission.

Evidence limit: Funeral-home records are not all county deaths; summaries should be checked against originals.

Sarah Daisy Barker Thomas/Corley family archive

Documents and photographs trace a Black family and its connections across counties. Material reaches from before the Civil War through the 1930s and includes original Idlewild, Michigan resort documents and brochures.

How to access it

Contact museum to arrange collection research and request reproduction permission.

Evidence limit: Broad descriptive dates are not precise year-by-year coverage; no guessed planner endpoints added.

Women’s Christian Temperance Union

What it can tell you
Organizational records offer a route to women’s civic activity and associates.

Selected listed years: 1878–1923

Date overlap is a lead, not a guarantee of complete coverage.

How to search, request and interpret this collection

Coverage and gaps
Microfilm listed for 1878–1923. Brief inventory does not identify complete unit, membership or volume coverage.

How to search
First identify the unit and record type on the film; record roles and dates rather than assuming every named woman was a member.

How to retrieve it
Ask the OGS library for the listed Women’s Christian Temperance Union microfilm, 1878–1923, and a detailed contents description.

Practical access
Request named collection and index or abstract; nonmembers pay daily admission.

If nothing turns up
The brief inventory supplies no membership-completeness claim or detailed unit coverage.
