PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

Other guide stops not shown on this map

These stops may be online collections, shared repositories or locations not yet confirmed for mapping. Follow the collection’s access instructions.

Map sources and limits

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 3, 2026.

Sources checked October 23, 2026. Based on public institutional descriptions, not staff confirmation or an onsite visit. Confirm current access before traveling.

Bring one focused question.

Start with a name or place, approximate years, and the fact you want to establish. These are selected research starting points. A catalog, index, museum exhibit and original record provide different kinds of evidence.

STOP 01 / NEWSPAPERS / DIRECTORIES / FAMILY BIBLES

Chillicothe and Ross County Public Library genealogy room

Build a timeline before requesting a case file.

What you can find

The Main Library lists marriages 1798–1950, divorces 1805–1967, births 1867–1908, wills 1797–1845, family Bible material and city directories beginning in 1860. Newspaper microfilm includes the Scioto Gazette beginning in 1800 and Clarksburg Star, April 1926–April 1965.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the second-floor genealogy room. Materials stay in the library; copies and scans to a flash drive are permitted. Ask research@crcpl.org about a specific item or the obituary-order service.

A question you can ask

Which newspaper issue, directory or family-history volume covers [person and date], and can I obtain the full page?

Keep in mind

Directories and yearbooks have gaps. The library separates Gazette microfilm through 2023 from later online access; database eligibility varies.

STOP 02 / MANUSCRIPTS / PHOTOGRAPHS / LOCAL LEDGERS

Ross County Historical Society McKell Library

Look for the papers behind the published history.

What you can find

The library preserves photographs, family Bibles, ledgers, scrapbooks, diaries, military material and maps. Special manuscripts document the War of 1812, Civil War and early Chillicothe; early newspapers are available in print and microfilm.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Search its online database, then contact info@rosscountyhistorical.org or 740-773-1896 with the item description. Published research hours are Tuesday–Thursday, 1–5 p.m.; longer appointments are offered Friday and Saturday. Confirm before travel.

A question you can ask

Is there a ledger, diary or photograph for [family, business or regiment], and what collection identifier and reproduction terms apply?

Keep in mind

A database description does not mean an image is online. The library publishes a user policy and research-request form; confirm admission and reproduction charges.

STOP 03 / EARLY ESTATES / GUARDIANSHIPS / MARRIAGES

Ross County Probate Court Archives

Territorial-era records can precede Ohio statehood.

What you can find

The court lists estate proceedings from 1797, guardianships from 1801, marriage registers from 1798 and probate death records for 1867–1908. Its archives occupy the former county jail.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the archived-record search linked on the court page. The research building is 21 West Main Street, Chillicothe; posted hours are Tuesday and Thursday, 8:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m., closed noon–1. Contact 740-774-1179 ext. 113 before visiting or ordering.

A question you can ask

Can I obtain the complete estate or guardianship file for [name and year], including inventories and supporting papers?

Keep in mind

Divorces belong with the Clerk of Courts. The page directs post-1908 vital-record requests to the health department. Date ranges do not establish survival of every file; verify fees and current access.

STOP 04 / LOCAL RESEARCH / FAMILYSEARCH AFFILIATE ACCESS

Ross County Genealogical Society library

A local workstation may open an otherwise restricted image.

What you can find

The society collects Ross County genealogical and historical records and identifies its library as a FamilySearch affiliate, providing on-site access to some restricted digital collections.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Visit 303 South Paint Street, Chillicothe. Contact info@rcgsohio.org or 740-773-2715 to confirm the collection and hours. Bring a free FamilySearch account for affiliate access.

A question you can ask

Can your library help locate [surname and township] material or access the specific FamilySearch film or image group I found?

Keep in mind

Affiliate status does not unlock every restricted collection. Confirm the exact image group and any local research charges. Tuesday is listed as closed; seasonal evening hours should not be assumed year-round.

STOP 05 / DEEDS / PROPERTY INDEXES / ORIGINAL INSTRUMENTS

Ross County Recorder

Follow the land through earlier owners.

What you can find

The Recorder provides official land-record searching. Its county information page describes broad online access back to January 1, 1974 and some earlier material; the current public search offers grantor/grantee and document searches.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the official search portal and compare the actual instrument with the index. For older volumes, call 740-702-3000 or visit 2 North Paint Street, Suite E, Chillicothe.

A question you can ask

Which grantor or grantee index covers [name and year], and can I obtain the complete deed with its book and page?

Keep in mind

The county information page links an older search service, while the current official portal is publicsearch.us. Ask staff about coverage rather than treating an absent online result as proof no deed exists.

STOP 06 / OCCUPATIONAL HISTORY / EARLY DENTAL EDUCATION

Dr. John Harris Dental Museum, Bainbridge

A small-town profession has a national story.

What you can find

The museum preserves the site of John Harris’s 1827 teaching practice and displays dental instruments and material about early dental education. It interprets the students whose later work helped establish American dental colleges.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the museum’s Visit Us page to arrange a visit and confirm seasonal availability. Its home page advertises weekend noon–4 hours but does not establish year-round opening.

A question you can ask

What documented material identifies the early students or practitioners associated with [person], and where are supporting records held?

Keep in mind

This is an occupational-context stop, not a verified collection of patient files or a complete student register. Ask about documentary access before planning a research visit.

Keep the evidence and the next step.

Save the repository, collection title, dates, box or volume and page, link, and what you searched. Follow an index entry to the full record. Keep uncertain identifications separate from established relationships.

ROSS COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Ross County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed October 26, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Official catalog descriptions checked October 25, 2026. These notes identify research routes, not completed name-level searches.

Camp Sherman photographs in the 322nd Field Artillery collection

Wright State University's MS-100 collection includes Photographs of Camp Sherman and Europe, 1918, in Box 2, Folder 22. The associated digital collection follows the regiment's training and overseas experience.

How to begin: Browse the digitized images in CORE Scholar, then retain the image title and collection identifier. For an archival question, cite MS-100, Box 2, Folder 22 to Wright State Special Collections & Archives.

What remains uncertain: This is a unit-specific photographic collection, not a complete roster of everyone who trained at Camp Sherman. Check individual image descriptions and reuse conditions.

COMMUNITY MEMORY

Community history groups and research leads

Local communities can help identify a place, photograph or possible source. These independently run groups are community leads, not catalogued archives or BWP partners. Keep the contributor, date, basis for an identification and original source together. Ask permission before republishing photographs or private contributions.

Facebook identities and visible access information checked October 25, 2026. Verification here concerns the group, not the accuracy of its members’ posts. No groups were joined and no messages were sent.

Ross County Genealogical Society

Clarksburg and early Chillicothe newspaper runs

Microfilm includes Clarksburg Star, April 1926–April 1965; Independent Republican, December 1809–September 1811; and Freedonian, September 1811–April 1814. Community notices can complement courthouse records.

How to access it

Use the second-floor Genealogy Room; ask research staff for obituary copies.

Evidence limit: Month boundaries matter. No claim that every issue survives.

City directories and school yearbooks

Chillicothe city directories span 1860–2016 with missing years. Ross County school yearbooks are also held, with incomplete school and year coverage. Use these to investigate addresses, occupations and school associations.

How to access it

Consult in the Genealogy Room; copying and flash-drive scanning available.

Evidence limit: Request the particular year and school before traveling.

Underage marriage consent affidavits

Marriage affidavits documenting parental consent are arranged in runs 1816–1855, 1855–1870, 1871–1885, 1886–1896 and 1897–1900. They can supplement registers that omit personal information before 1900.

How to access it

Tuesday and Thursday, 8:30–3:30, closed noon–1; contact archives staff.

Evidence limit: Match the affidavit to the marriage; not every marriage required parental consent.

Delayed birth registration and corrections

Nineteen individually indexed volumes cover delayed birth registrations and corrections filed in 1941–1960. Probate birth records cover 1867–1908, chiefly township births.

How to access it

Ask archives staff for the volume index. Mail requests to 2 N. Paint Street, Suite A, rather than the building address.

Evidence limit: Filing years are not birth years. Post-1908 vital records are referred to the health department.

Local genealogy library and restricted-image access

The society collects Ross County genealogy and operates a FamilySearch Affiliate Library, providing an on-site route to eligible restricted digital collections.

How to access it

Bring a free FamilySearch account. Monday 10–4; Wednesday–Saturday 1–4; Tuesday closed.

Evidence limit: Affiliate status does not unlock every restricted image. Request local catalog holdings for the family or township; no dated local series asserted.
