PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 3, 2026.

Sources checked October 23, 2026. Based on public institutional descriptions, not staff confirmation or an onsite visit. Confirm current access before traveling.

Bring one focused question.

Start with a name or place, approximate years, and the fact you want to establish. These are selected research starting points. A catalog, index, museum exhibit and original record provide different kinds of evidence.

STOP 01 / PROBATE / FAMILY AND COMMUNITY PAPERS

Hayes Presidential Library local genealogy collections

A presidential library with substantial everyday family-history sources.

What you can find

The library holds local family, business, church and township material. Its Sandusky probate microfilm collection, LG-MF, includes wills, estates, marriages and naturalizations spanning selected years from 1820 to 1967.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Search the catalog and record call numbers. Consult the probate finding aid before visiting the reading room or asking staff for copies.

A question you can ask

Which estate film or family collection covers this person, and what is the original file reference?

Keep in mind

The probate collection is explicitly incomplete. A collection’s overall span does not mean every record type covers every year.

STOP 02 / MILITARY / FAMILY LETTERS

Hayes Library Civil War and veterans collections

Connect military service with the home community and veterans’ organizations.

What you can find

The Civil War guide identifies Eugene Rawson GAR Post and Woman’s Relief Corps records, 1881-1974, and individual soldiers’ letters and diaries. A county soldiers database draws on multiple original sources.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the guide to identify a collection number, such as LH-251, and ask library staff about access and reproduction.

A question you can ask

Do the GAR records, veterans’ sketches or correspondence mention this soldier or family?

Keep in mind

A compiled soldier database is a locator. Check its underlying sources, and distinguish originals from typed transcripts and photocopies.

STOP 03 / OBITUARIES / FREMONT NEWS

Birchard Public Library newspaper microfilm

Bridge a newspaper title change without losing the search.

What you can find

The main library lists Fremont Daily News microfilm for 1912 to October 1, 1938, and Fremont News-Messenger from October 1938 forward. Staff can research and copy an obituary.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the library’s obituary-request route or consult the microfilm in person. Provide the name, death date and likely publication date; donations are appreciated.

A question you can ask

Can you check the appropriate title around this death date and send the complete obituary with citation?

Keep in mind

Confirm exact issue availability. The Ohio Obituary Index is a finding aid, and a missing index entry does not prove no obituary exists.

STOP 04 / EARLY VITALS / MARRIAGES

Sandusky County Probate Court historical searches

Use the court’s separate historical-record search routes.

What you can find

The court provides births and deaths for 1867 through December 20, 1908, and separate marriage search routes for before 1994 and 1994 forward.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Enter through the official Records Search page. Early vital entries may be printed without charge; contact 419-334-6211 or probateinfo@sanduskycountyoh.gov for certified copies.

A question you can ask

Can you supply or identify the complete entry behind this historical search result?

Keep in mind

The court states it has no county birth and death records before 1867. Later vital records belong with the health department.

STOP 05 / SCHOOL / COUNTY HOME / TOWNSHIP

BGSU Center for Archival Collections: Sandusky records

Find a household through school-age enumerations and institutional records.

What you can find

The inventory lists selected school-age enumerations from 1844 forward, mothers’ pensions for 1914-1921, county-home admissions and infirmary registers, and Woodville cemetery and township records.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Record series and reel numbers, then book a research appointment or contact cac@libanswers.bgsu.edu before traveling to Bowling Green.

A question you can ask

Which school enumeration or admission series covers this township, person and year?

Keep in mind

Coverage is discontinuous and format varies. Confirm access and copying; do not treat an inventory’s date range as complete annual coverage.

STOP 06 / LOCAL OBJECTS / HISTORIC STREETS

Sandusky County Historical Society Holderman House

Compare today’s Fremont streets with documented historical views.

What you can find

The society presents county artifacts at Holderman House and offers a downloadable Fremont walking-tour brochure with historical photographs and locations.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Contact 419-332-0303 about relevant material and confirm seasonal access to 514 Birchard Avenue, Fremont.

A question you can ask

Does a photograph or object document this storefront, street or family business?

Keep in mind

A museum visit is not guaranteed archival research access. Ask about the original image, its date and reproduction terms. Sandusky city is in Erie County, not Sandusky County.

Keep the evidence and the next step.

Save the repository, collection title, dates, box or volume and page, link, and what you searched. Follow an index entry to the full record. Keep uncertain identifications separate from established relationships.

SANDUSKY COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Sandusky County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed October 26, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Additional collection references

Official catalog descriptions checked October 25, 2026. These notes identify research routes, not completed name-level searches.

Green Creek Township indentures and apprenticeships

Hayes Presidential Library & Museums lists indentures and apprenticeships, 1834–1876, in Green Creek Township Records, LG-8. The collection also includes township minutes, 1820–1877, and Civil War bounty records, 1864–1865.

How to begin: Start with the linked Green Creek Township finding aid on Hayes's Local Government Collections page. Give staff the township, record type, date range and LG-8 identifier when planning a visit; the institution lists these records as available during regular hours.

What remains uncertain: These are Green Creek Township holdings. Do not substitute Woodville Township or describe the entire county as covered. An online finding aid does not mean the original records are digitized.

Follow a specific collection

Additional collection-level routes checked November 3, 2026. Confirm current access before visiting.

Woodville Township schools and cemetery administration

Woodville trustees minutes cover 1856–1900 and 1910–1942. School-age enumerations cover 1887–1890; the township burial register covers 1906–1936.

How to access it

Book a research appointment and request the named microfilm series. Repository is in Wood County.

Evidence limit: The intervening trustees years are not listed. Enumerations identify school-age populations, not necessarily attendance.

County Home admissions and family support

County Home admittance records survive for 1884–1901, 1918–1931 and 1936–1944 (reel 85). Mothers pension records and journal cover 1914–1921 (reel 87).

How to access it

Book a research appointment and request the named microfilm series. Repository is in Wood County.

Evidence limit: Keep the three admissions runs separate; absence from one surviving volume does not establish non-residence.

School, village and workplace photographs

Sandusky County Photograph Collection spans 1850–1984. Boxes 3A–3B organize schools, pupils and staff; box 18 includes Clyde classes, 1891–1912, and senior classes of 1954 and 1958. Business photographs can place ancestors in workplaces.

How to access it

Request box/folder references from the manuscript curator; verify current library hours.

Evidence limit: Collection-wide span is not a complete annual school run. Many photographs are unidentified.

Probate administration and infant-name index

LG-MF roll 37 includes administration records 1820–1841 and docket 1837–1842. The reading room also holds the Kin Hunters Births Register and Infant Name Index, 1867–1908, call number F497 S2T6 1998.

How to access it

Consult microfilm and the compiled index in the Library Reading Room.

Evidence limit: The probate microfilm collection is explicitly incomplete; verify entries against original records.

Fremont newspaper transition in 1938

Microfilm covers Fremont Daily News, 1912–October 1, 1938, and Fremont News-Messenger from October 1938 onward. Search notices and community reporting as well as obituaries.

How to access it

Anyone may use the film; staff can research and copy obituaries. Donations appreciated.

Evidence limit: Confirm the precise issue. The Hayes obituary index is a locator, not a substitute for the article.
