PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

Other guide stops not shown on this map

These stops may be online collections, shared repositories or locations not yet confirmed for mapping. Follow the collection’s access instructions.

Map sources and limits

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 3, 2026.

Sources checked October 23, 2026. Based on public institutional descriptions, not staff confirmation or an onsite visit. Confirm current access before traveling.

Bring one focused question.

Start with a name or place, approximate years, and the fact you want to establish. These are selected research starting points. A catalog, index, museum exhibit and original record provide different kinds of evidence.

STOP 01 / LIBRARY / TOWNSHIP AND CHURCH RECORDS

Scioto Library Henry A. Lorberg Local History Department

Try township minutes and German church material alongside vital records.

What you can find

Microfilm includes Nile Township records, 1853–1921; Portsmouth Evangelical Church records in German; Lorberg and Peebles scrapbooks; marriages, 1803–1911; and several court series. Directories begin in 1856 with gaps.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Contact 740-354-5304 before visiting the Portsmouth Library. Specific remote requests for researchers outside a fifty-mile radius are offered for a fee; ask about the current process.

A question you can ask

Which Nile Township or church volumes cover [family, locality and years]?

Keep in mind

The library lists broad spans, not a guarantee of every event. Some fragile Ohio Room material cannot be photocopied. Ask which series and formats are available.

STOP 02 / ONLINE / PHOTOGRAPHS AND INDUSTRY

Scioto Library digital collections

Find a workplace, church or neighborhood in pictures.

What you can find

The online collection includes Mount Joy Christian Church and Micklethwaite family collections, an 1871 Portsmouth bird's-eye view, and local industrial objects including Selby Shoe Company material.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Search the library's digital archive by surname, street, business and subject; browse individual collections when name searches fail. Preserve the item URL and its description.

A question you can ask

Can you identify the source and reproduction conditions for [item title and URL]?

Keep in mind

This is another route into the library, not a separate archive. Item descriptions and family identifications should be checked against the original and supporting records. Image reuse conditions vary.

STOP 03 / UNIVERSITY / NEWSPAPERS AND PUBLIC LIFE

Shawnee State Center for Public History

Consult original newspapers and the papers of a major regional public figure.

What you can find

The center describes an inventoried print newspaper collection spanning more than twenty Portsmouth titles, from the 1820s into the early 2000s. Vern Riffe papers include speeches, correspondence, photographs and other public-service records.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Request an appointment through publichistory@shawnee.edu or 740-351-3513. Its website links initial digitized Riffe selections and the Scioto Historical interpretive project.

A question you can ask

Which newspaper issues or Riffe files relate to [community, industry or event] in [years]?

Keep in mind

Digitization is described as ongoing. Do not assume the entire print newspaper run or Riffe collection is online, or that the broad date span is issue-complete.

STOP 04 / HOUSE MUSEUM / EARLY SETTLEMENT

1810 House and Scioto County Historical Society

Explore early Portsmouth through the Peter Kinney household.

What you can find

The local foundation's organization profile describes documents and artifacts of local significance and interpretation of the Peter Kinney family. The society preserves historical material and operates the house museum.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Arrange a tour at 740-354-3760; 1926 Waller Street, Portsmouth. Ask separately about research access to documents, rather than assuming a tour includes archival consultation.

A question you can ask

Which documented items relate to [family or early Portsmouth topic], and may I consult their provenance?

Keep in mind

The published profile does not provide an archival inventory or establish surname coverage. Treat this as an appointment-based museum and referral stop.

STOP 05 / LAND RECORDS / PROPERTY HISTORY

Scioto County Recorder

Reconstruct ownership before relying on a modern parcel map.

What you can find

The recorder maintains recorded land transfers and encumbrances and links a property-record search from its official website.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use Search Records, then contact the office for historical index assistance: 740-355-8304, 602 Seventh Street, Room 110, Portsmouth. Published hours are weekdays 8–4.

A question you can ask

Which grantor/grantee index covers [surname and years], and how do I obtain the referenced deed?

Keep in mind

The overview does not verify the oldest searchable online images. Ask about older books when an online search returns no match.

STOP 06 / COURT / CASE FOLLOW-UP

Scioto County Clerk of Courts

Follow a court-index lead to a verified record.

What you can find

The clerk provides an official online case-record gateway with a notice explaining its limitations. It is a starting point for identifying court material, not a published historical collection inventory.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

For verified information contact 740-355-8218, weekdays 8–4:30, or visit 602 Seventh Street, Room 205, Portsmouth. Supply a case number if known and ask which historical indexes survive.

A question you can ask

Where can I locate [person's] case from [year], including any surviving original papers?

Keep in mind

Electronic coverage and posting delays limit searches. A missing result does not establish that no historical case exists; confirm jurisdiction and older custody directly.

Keep the evidence and the next step.

Save the repository, collection title, dates, box or volume and page, link, and what you searched. Follow an index entry to the full record. Keep uncertain identifications separate from established relationships.

SCIOTO COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Scioto County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed October 26, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.

COMMUNITY MEMORY

Community history groups and research leads

Local communities can help identify a place, photograph or possible source. These independently run groups are community leads, not catalogued archives or BWP partners. Keep the contributor, date, basis for an identification and original source together. Ask permission before republishing photographs or private contributions.

Facebook identities and visible access information checked October 25, 2026. Verification here concerns the group, not the accuracy of its members’ posts. No groups were joined and no messages were sent.

Nile Township microfilm

Nile Township Records, 1853–1921, provide a local-government route beyond county vital records.

How to access it

Call 740-354-5304 for reel access.

Evidence limit: Inventory does not specify every record type or missing volume; ask before travel.

German-language and neighborhood newspapers

Portsmouth Correspondent, 1894–1908, is a German-language newspaper; Portsmouth Morning Sun covers 1921–1930.

How to access it

Consult microfilm; remote NewspaperArchive requires SCPL card.

Evidence limit: Title spans do not guarantee every issue or an obituary for every death.

Delayed birth evidence

Delayed Births and Corrections, 1941–1961, can supply later evidence of earlier births.

How to access it

Request the microfilm series by title.

Evidence limit: 1941–1961 describes records, not a restriction to people born in those years.

Mercy Hospital nursing-school photographs

Mercy Hospital School of Nursing collection includes identified class portraits and ceremonies: examples from 1946, 1948, 1949, 1956 and 1959. Names and inscriptions can connect students to hometowns and classmates.

How to access it

Browse the 75-item collection and individual descriptions; request provenance for an image.

Evidence limit: Selected dated examples are not a continuous student register. Do not infer attendance from an unlabeled group image.

Vern Riffe papers and original Portsmouth newspapers

Vern Riffe papers include speeches, correspondence and photographs from public service. Separately, inventoried original newspapers include over twenty Portsmouth titles from the 1820s into the early 2000s.

How to access it

Email publichistory@shawnee.edu to arrange access and confirm the research room. Initial Riffe selections are linked in Digital Commons.

Evidence limit: Newspaper digitization is described as a project, not a completed continuous online archive. Campus address is not a confirmed archive entrance.
