PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

Other guide stops not shown on this map

These stops may be online collections, shared repositories or locations not yet confirmed for mapping. Follow the collection’s access instructions.

Map sources and limits

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 3, 2026.

Sources checked October 23, 2026. Based on public institutional descriptions, not staff confirmation or an onsite visit. Confirm current access before traveling.

Bring one focused question.

Start with a name or place, approximate years, and the fact you want to establish. These are selected research starting points. A catalog, index, museum exhibit and original record provide different kinds of evidence.

STOP 01 / LOCAL HISTORY / INSTITUTIONAL SOURCES

Tiffin-Seneca Public Library genealogy department

Ask about the Junior Home as well as familiar surname records.

What you can find

The collection includes family histories, directories, early newspapers, business material and resources on the Junior Order of United American Mechanics Home.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Schedule an appointment with the genealogy specialist before an out-of-town visit. Use infoservices@tiffinsenecalibrary.org for requests and confirm fees; requests are limited to three records at a time.

A question you can ask

What Junior Home or community material covers this person and period?

Keep in mind

Topic coverage does not establish a complete resident register. Obtain the source citation and ask about access restrictions on individual records.

STOP 02 / FOSTORIA / THREE-COUNTY RESEARCH

Kaubisch Memorial Public Library

Check the county boundary before deciding where a record belongs.

What you can find

Fostoria spans Seneca, Hancock and Wood counties. The collection includes Toledo Diocese resources, cemetery indexes, family histories and an obituary card file indexed through the Hayes Ohio Obituary Index.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Send requests to kaubischgenealogy@seolibraries.org or visit 205 Perry Street, Fostoria. Confirm the current fee and payment method; the page asks up to five business days for replies.

A question you can ask

Which county and source cover this address, church or death?

Keep in mind

An obituary index locates a record; request the article. Fostoria residence alone does not establish which county recorded an event.

STOP 03 / PHOTOGRAPHS / COMMUNITY PUBLICATIONS

Seneca County Digital Library

Use a community publication to identify businesses and neighborhoods.

What you can find

The Ohio Memory collection includes the 1954 Fostoria Centennial Souvenir Program, with photographs, maps, historical accounts and sponsor advertisements.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Follow the digital-library link from Tiffin-Seneca Public Library or open the cited item and browse the complete program.

A question you can ask

Does a photograph, advertisement or map identify this business or location?

Keep in mind

A retrospective anniversary account is not contemporary proof of every event it describes. Check its sources and the original item metadata.

STOP 04 / COUNTY HOME / TAX / CORONER

BGSU Center for Archival Collections: Seneca records

Explore records that explain residence and hardship between censuses.

What you can find

The inventory lists infirmary registers for 1856-1966, county-home admission permits for 1900-1903, tax lists for 1841-1846 and coroner inquests for 1883-1935 and 1950.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Copy the series title and reel number, then arrange research with BGSU’s Center for Archival Collections in Bowling Green.

A question you can ask

Can I examine the specified infirmary or tax series for this household and year?

Keep in mind

Holdings are selected and have gaps. Confirm format, restrictions and copying before visiting; this repository is outside the county.

STOP 05 / MARRIAGES / NATURALIZATION / ESTATES

Seneca County Probate Court

Check the current preservation notice before requesting early vital records.

What you can find

The court lists marriages from 1841, estate indexes from the 1840s and naturalizations for 1834-1930. Its genealogy page currently says 1867-1908 birth and death records are unavailable during microfilming and scanning.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Call 419-447-3121 about availability. Follow the court’s written-request instructions and confirm current fees and mailing address.

A question you can ask

Is the requested series available, and can you provide the full entry or file reference?

Keep in mind

The temporary notice has no completion date. Do not assume the records are available or that the public online search contains all historical files.

STOP 06 / MATERIAL CULTURE / RESEARCH LIBRARY

Seneca County Museum

Explore the community through objects and a research-library referral.

What you can find

The museum presents local artifacts, photographs and military material; the county destination organization identifies a research library covering varied local topics.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Contact 419-447-5955 before a research visit to 28 Clay Street, Tiffin. Check current guided-tour hours separately from research arrangements.

A question you can ask

Does the research library have documentation for this object, business or family connection?

Keep in mind

Public descriptions do not give a collection-level archival inventory. Confirm the relevant material and reproduction terms before traveling.

Keep the evidence and the next step.

Save the repository, collection title, dates, box or volume and page, link, and what you searched. Follow an index entry to the full record. Keep uncertain identifications separate from established relationships.

SENECA COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Seneca County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed October 26, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.

Junior Homekid Alumni Newsletters, 1997–1999

Ohio Memory catalogs Junior Homekid Alumni Newsletters, 1997–1999, contributed by Tiffin-Seneca Public Library and created by the Junior Order United American Mechanics Home Alumni.

How to begin: Open the Ohio Memory item and browse its available pages. Ask Tiffin-Seneca Public Library about additional years or related Junior Home material, using the exact newsletter title.

What remains uncertain: These are later alumni publications, not original admission files or proof of parentage. Read individual contributions in context and check image-use terms before reproducing pages.

COMMUNITY MEMORY

Community history groups and research leads

Local communities can help identify a place, photograph or possible source. These independently run groups are community leads, not catalogued archives or BWP partners. Keep the contributor, date, basis for an identification and original source together. Ask permission before republishing photographs or private contributions.

Facebook identities and visible access information checked October 25, 2026. Verification here concerns the group, not the accuracy of its members’ posts. No groups were joined and no messages were sent.

Evidence limit: No dated Junior Home resident-register inventory is published here. Ask which materials are original records, histories or images.

Toledo Diocese records, cemetery indexes, contributed family histories and an obituary card file serve Fostoria across Seneca, Hancock and Wood counties.

How to access it

Use department computers and microfilm readers or email a specific request; obituary copies cost $3 each.
