PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

Other guide stops not shown on this map

These stops may be online collections, shared repositories or locations not yet confirmed for mapping. Follow the collection’s access instructions.

Map sources and limits

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 3, 2026.

Sources checked November 1, 2026. Based on public institutional descriptions, not staff confirmation or an onsite visit. Confirm current access before traveling.

Follow the locality and the record type.

Start with a name or place, approximate years, and the fact you want to establish. These are selected research starting points. A catalog, index, museum exhibit and original record provide different kinds of evidence.

STOP 01 / GENEALOGY / INSTITUTIONAL RECORDS

Barbara Adams Genealogy Research Center

Look for school, church and children’s-home references alongside vital records.

What you can find

The society’s Barbara Adams Genealogy Research Center at Ross Historical Center includes school, church, institutional and vital-record publications. SHELBYANA began in October 1979; issues contain surname indexes and extracts from wills, guardianships, newspapers and other sources. The society lists a separate index to issues 1–100 (1979–2004).

How to begin

Contact the society before visiting its research center at 201 N. Main Avenue, Sidney. Ask about volunteer availability and specific holdings.

Research details & a question to ask

A question you can ask

Request a SHELBYANA surname-index search and the original source behind any abstract.

Keep in mind

Confirm volunteer research availability. Meeting times are not research-room hours. A published abstract or newsletter reference is a lead to its cited source, not the complete original.

STOP 02 / RUMLEY / COMMUNITY HISTORY

Shelby County Historical Society

Recover the context of a community that may be absent from modern maps.

What you can find

The society’s archived history articles include Rumley, its Black settlers, churches and cemeteries, and the arrival and settlement of Randolph freedpeople.

How to begin

Begin with the society’s Archives page, then contact info@shelbycountyhistory.org about supporting documents or a research visit.

Research details & a question to ask

A question you can ask

Ask for the cited source, map or photograph behind a specific historical claim.

Keep in mind

These retrospective articles are research leads, not proof of a family relationship. Historical language and place descriptions reflect their sources.

STOP 03 / LOCAL GENEALOGY / FUNERAL CARDS

Fort Loramie Historical Association and Wilderness Trail Museum

Add Fort Loramie and Miami-Erie Canal context to a family timeline.

What you can find

The genealogy room offers donated family trees, funeral and memorial cards, local histories, rural directories and school publications. Its inventory includes a 1932–1934 farm directory. Subscription research access is listed onsite, including Catholic church records concerning St. Michael.

How to begin

The genealogy room lists Tuesday 9 a.m.–noon assistance at 37 N. Main Street, Fort Loramie. Call 937-710-5932 for an appointment or to confirm a visit. The association says it cannot respond to email research requests; seasonal museum-tour hours are separate.

Research details & a question to ask

A question you can ask

Which family file, funeral card or directory covers this person and period, and may I consult or copy it during a visit?

Keep in mind

Confirm the specific item is available. A family tree is compiled evidence; a funeral card may contain informant errors. Do not assume every listed subscription is remotely accessible.

STOP 04 / PROBATE / HISTORICAL MICROFILM

Shelby County Probate Court

Move beyond the date limits of the online portal.

What you can find

The court inventory lists marriages, estates and guardianships from 1825, and births and deaths, 1867–1908. The online portal covers cases from 1997, with images from 2012; earlier records require the clerk’s historical-record route.

How to begin

Contact the court at 937-498-7263 before an older-record visit. Supply names, dates and any case number.

Research details & a question to ask

A question you can ask

Ask which estate, guardianship or marriage index covers the requested year.

Keep in mind

The society separately lists will abstracts beginning in 1820. Ask the custodian about those earlier volumes rather than treating the court’s 1825 inventory start as proof that nothing earlier survives. Portal coverage is not the same as record survival.

STOP 05 / LAND / DEED COPIES

Shelby County Recorder

Find the historical volume before requesting an offline copy.

What you can find

The recorder publishes an online index beginning July 1, 1989, while older records remain an office research route.

How to begin

Use the copy-request form with the volume and page. Contact recorder@shelbyco.net for arrangements and current charges.

Research details & a question to ask

A question you can ask

Ask which grantor or grantee index covers the earlier transaction and follow references to prior deeds.

Keep in mind

The office assists visiting researchers but does not undertake extended genealogy searches. The online index is not the full historical collection.

STOP 06 / REGIONAL ARCHIVES / CHILDREN’S HOME

Wright State University Special Collections and Archives

Check a regional repository for records held outside the county.

What you can find

Wright State identifies Shelby County children’s-home records in its genealogy guide. Its SC-25 finding aid also points to Common Pleas civil dockets, 1824–1853; a general index, 1818–1857; minutes, 1819–1854; and coroner’s inquests, 1831–1871. These are catalog leads to confirm with staff, not a complete county inventory.

How to begin

The reading room is closed through Fall 2026. Email library-archives@wright.edu about limited remote reference and the relevant catalog record.

Research details & a question to ask

A question you can ask

Ask for the Shelby County series title, dates, restrictions and original-record custodian.

Keep in mind

The reading room is closed through Fall 2026, with limited remote service. The linked SC-25 aid concerns historical abuse and death; its related-materials list supplies the court-series references above. Confirm custody, completeness and retrieval.

STOP 07 / SCHOOLS / TOWNSHIP FINANCE

School and township accounts in society publications

Look beyond yearbooks for teachers and school administration.

What you can find

The society lists a Teachers’ Institute record book, 1880–1913, and Cynthian Township bonds, 1867–1915, with school-fund accounts, 1898–1903. Its one-room-school books have separate indexing arrangements.

How to begin

Give the society the exact publication title and year. Ask whether a research copy or purchase is available at the Barbara Adams center.

Research details & a question to ask

A question you can ask

Which original volume or collection does this reference describe, and how can I consult the relevant entry?

Keep in mind

The teachers’ volume is listed as unindexed. These are publication descriptions, not a claim that the society holds every original school register. The catalog is marked September 2019; confirm availability.

STOP 08 / INSTITUTIONS / FAMILY SUPPORT

Children’s-home, infirmary and mothers’ pension leads

Follow a published reference to the underlying institutional record.

What you can find

Listed publications cover the children’s-home register, 1893–1962; infirmary index, 1866–1883; and mothers’ pension docket, 1915–1932.

How to begin

Ask for the index or publication and the original-record custodian. For the children’s home, also ask Wright State about its holdings and current remote access.

Research details & a question to ask

A question you can ask

Which original volume or collection does this reference describe, and how can I consult the relevant entry?

Keep in mind

Admission does not establish that both parents had died. Check restrictions and the complete entry before drawing family conclusions.

STOP 09 / CHURCH / LOCAL PRACTITIONERS

Church circuits and physicians’ birth registers

Use a congregation or practitioner when a countywide search stalls.

What you can find

The catalog lists Port Jefferson Church of Christ records, 1873–1903; a Methodist circuit covering Port Jefferson, Pemberton, Maplewood and Rum Creek, 1903–1916; and the LeMaster physicians’ birth register, 1920–1940.

How to begin

Request the named publication, then record its volume or page and source citation. Confirm the congregation and locality of each entry.

Research details & a question to ask

A question you can ask

Which original volume or collection does this reference describe, and how can I consult the relevant entry?

Keep in mind

These cover particular churches or practitioners, not all county residents. A circuit includes multiple communities.

STOP 10 / PROPERTY / COURT ABSTRACTS

Early tax and land-sale references

Use land disputes and estate sales to identify associates.

What you can find

Published leads include land tax, 1821; tax sales, 1822–1829; equalization proceedings, 1846–1870; and land-sale petitions, 1852–1862 and 1860–1866.

How to begin

Ask which abstract or index matches the year, then request the cited court volume or deed. Note all parties and the legal land description.

Research details & a question to ask

A question you can ask

Which original volume or collection does this reference describe, and how can I consult the relevant entry?

Keep in mind

Overlapping publication spans do not mean duplicate or continuous records. A tax entry alone does not establish residence or kinship.

STOP 11 / DIGITIZED NEWSPAPERS

Shelby County Democrat in Ohio Memory

Browse the issue after searching a name.

What you can find

Ohio Memory lists a Shelby County Democrat collection covering 1869–1883. It can lead to school notices, probate notices and community events.

How to begin

Open the collection, check available issues, and search spelling variants or browse near a known date. Save newspaper title, issue date and page.

Research details & a question to ask

A question you can ask

Which original volume or collection does this reference describe, and how can I consult the relevant entry?

Keep in mind

The collection span does not guarantee every issue survives or is online. OCR can miss a printed name.

Keep the evidence and the next step.

Save the repository, collection title, dates, box or volume and page, link, and what you searched. Follow an index entry to the full record. Keep uncertain identifications separate from established relationships.

SHELBY COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Shelby County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Additional collections reviewed November 1, 2026; earlier baseline sources reviewed October 26, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.
