PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

Map sources and limits

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 3, 2026.

Sources checked October 23, 2026. Based on public institutional descriptions, not staff confirmation or an onsite visit. Confirm current access before traveling.

Bring one focused question.

Start with a name or place, approximate years, and the fact you want to establish. These are selected research starting points. A catalog, index, museum exhibit and original record provide different kinds of evidence.

STOP 01 / GENEALOGY / DIGITAL LOCAL HISTORY

Stark Library Family and Local History

Combine genealogy research with local images and recordings.

What you can find

Stark Memory presents digitized photographs, printed materials and audio from the library’s holdings. The family-history service connects researchers with library resources.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Start at Family and Local History and ask staff about a specific family, place and period.

A question you can ask

Which local collection supplements the standard census and vital-record searches?

Keep in mind

Digital selections are not complete holdings; check database access conditions and source descriptions.

STOP 02 / COUNTY ARCHIVES / MANUSCRIPTS

Ramsayer Research Library at the McKinley Museum

Look beyond presidential history for Stark County evidence.

What you can find

Holdings include county genealogical material, manuscripts, photographs, maps, oral histories and architectural drawings alongside McKinley material.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

The research library is free to enter, but appointments are requested. Confirm research arrangements separately from museum admission.

A question you can ask

Is there an architectural drawing, manuscript or photograph for this local family or business?

Keep in mind

Not every item is online, and museum exhibition access is different from research retrieval.

STOP 03 / PHOTOGRAPHS / HOME MOVIES / ORAL HISTORY

Massillon Museum research archives

Explore everyday life preserved in images and recordings.

What you can find

The museum archives include photographs and documents, oral histories and local home movies, plus reference books and family genealogies.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Request an appointment through the museum research page; allow time for staff response and review research fees.

A question you can ask

Are there home movies or photographs connected to this neighborhood or organization?

Keep in mind

The museum explicitly does not hold patient-record archives. Permission and reproduction fees are separate from research access.

STOP 04 / DIARIES / BUSINESS / EARLY SETTLEMENT

Massillon Public Library: Rotch-Wales Papers

Read records of early local lives rather than relying only on a later history.

What you can find

The library’s resource guide links the Rotch-Wales Papers: correspondence, diaries, accounts, ledgers and daybooks of Thomas Rotch and Arvine Wales I.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Follow the collection link through the library resource page; ask the genealogy specialist for help with a named person or transaction.

A question you can ask

Does a diary or account entry mention this person or local business?

Keep in mind

These are specific creators’ papers, not a comprehensive county register. Preserve the document date and citation.

STOP 05 / AIRCRAFT / ENGINEERING / WORKERS

Alliance Memory: industry photographs

See the factory and people behind an occupational entry.

What you can find

Taylorcraft photographs show aircraft production and employees. The Morgan Engineering collection includes factory equipment, cranes, employees and families.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Search Alliance Memory by company or person and contact the contributing repository for additional context.

A question you can ask

Is this employee identified in the caption or an associated document?

Keep in mind

A factory photograph may show unidentified people; do not infer employment from resemblance alone.

STOP 06 / ORAL HISTORY / SCHOOLS / TOWNSHIPS

Alliance Memory: Voices and community collections

Follow the story outside the city-center newspaper.

What you can find

Voices of Alliance contains recordings and transcripts. Other collections include school yearbooks and Washington Township photographs of Maximo, Freeburg, schools, churches and farms.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Browse the named collection and preserve the interview or image identifier with your notes.

A question you can ask

Is there an interview or school image connected to this community?

Keep in mind

This is a separate route in the same digital project. Recollections need corroboration and digitized coverage varies.

Keep the evidence and the next step.

Save the repository, collection title, dates, box or volume and page, link, and what you searched. Follow an index entry to the full record. Keep uncertain identifications separate from established relationships.

STARK COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Stark County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed October 26, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Source, access and coverage limits

Ask the Ohio Genealogical Society library in Bellville to confirm the reel and current access before visiting, or inquire about its look-up/copy service.

microfilm

School-age youth enumeration

Listed years: 1862.

Source, access and coverage limits

Ask the Ohio Genealogical Society library in Bellville to confirm the reel and current access before visiting, or inquire about its look-up/copy service.

Keep in mind: Selected microfilm holdings in an older inventory, updated 2012. These endpoints do not prove complete registration, every surviving volume, or online image access.

digitized collection

Court records collection

Listed years: 1809–1917.

Source, access and coverage limits

Follow the guide’s FamilySearch collection link and check current image-access conditions; ask University Archives about the specific series.

Keep in mind: Collection-level span includes different court series; do not imply every court record is present for every year.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.

Facebook identities and visible access information checked October 25, 2026. Verification here concerns the group, not the accuracy of its members’ posts. No groups were joined and no messages were sent.

How to search
Record the indexed spelling and reference, then inspect the underlying poll book to identify what the entry means.

How to retrieve it
