PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

Map sources and limits

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 3, 2026.

Sources checked October 23, 2026. Based on public institutional descriptions, not staff confirmation or an onsite visit. Confirm current access before traveling.

Bring one focused question.

Start with a name or place, approximate years, and the fact you want to establish. These are selected research starting points. A catalog, index, museum exhibit and original record provide different kinds of evidence.

STOP 01 / CHURCH / CEMETERY / COURT RECORDS

Tuscarawas County Genealogical Society

Follow a family into local records beyond the major databases.

What you can find

The Dennison library describes local church records, including a large Moravian collection, cemetery records, family histories, newspaper microfilm, and court docket materials in its archives.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Contact tcgslibrary@gmail.com or 740-922-0531 at 307 Center Street, Dennison. Volunteer opening days rotate; the site offers other times by appointment with two weeks’ notice. Confirm before traveling.

A question you can ask

Which church, cemetery, or court series covers [family, locality, and years], and can I obtain the complete entry?

Keep in mind

Date coverage varies by collection. Homepage collection totals are inconsistent, so use the catalog or staff response for a particular request. A family history is a lead to supporting records.

STOP 02 / YEARBOOKS / DIRECTORIES / ARCHIVAL FINDING AIDS

Dover Public Library Local History Room

Look for the school, address, or family papers behind a name.

What you can find

The Local History Room and Dover Historical Society Archives list Dover High School yearbooks from 1913, directories for several county communities, historical atlases of 1875 and 1908, and Ohio soldier rosters. Online finding aids cover the Archinal Papers and Dover High School.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Start with the library’s resource page and finding aids. Use its Ask a Librarian or Article Request link to request a specific folder, directory year, or page and confirm consultation arrangements.

A question you can ask

Does [finding aid or directory] contain material for [person, school, address, and dates], and how can I consult it?

Keep in mind

Yearbook and directory coverage is not necessarily continuous. Finding aids describe collections, not fully digitized contents; ask about copies and restrictions.

STOP 03 / MORAVIAN HISTORY / COUNTY HOME / MAPS

Tuscarawas County Historical Society / Tusc Kent Archives

Try institutional and community files when a household disappears from view.

What you can find

The archive holds Earl Olmstead’s books and research, Moravian history, local files and maps, and donated boxes including County Home records, family histories, photographs, and newspapers. Much of the book collection is searchable in KentLink.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

The archive is near the Student Union in Founders Hall at Kent State Tuscarawas. The society gives directions from parking Lot C and publishes morning opening hours on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Call 330-663-6844 to confirm staff availability and requested material.

A question you can ask

Which County Home or community files cover [person or locality and years], and what restrictions apply?

Keep in mind

County Home date ranges and individual-record access are not specified. Ask for a collection and folder reference; a catalog search does not cover every archival box.

STOP 04 / RAILROAD / WARTIME CANTEEN / LOCAL HISTORY

Dennison Railroad Depot Museum Research Library

Research inside a railroad car.

What you can find

The museum describes a Railroad Research Library housing its archives in a fifth railroad car, alongside a Local History Car and a WWII hospital car containing WWI and WWII collections.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Research-library access is by appointment during museum open hours. Contact customerservice@dennisondepot.org or 740-922-6776 at 400 Center Street, Dennison. Explain the railroad, community, wartime role, or dates of interest.

A question you can ask

Do your archives have photographs, documents, or canteen material relating to [name, role, railroad, and years]?

Keep in mind

Employment files or named canteen records are not guaranteed. A digitization project does not mean all holdings are already available online; request a holdings check and reproduction terms.

STOP 05 / GERMAN SEPARATIST COMMUNITY / PHOTOGRAPHS / GENEALOGY

Historic Zoar Village / Zoar Community Association

Place a family within Zoar’s distinctive communal history.

What you can find

The official site advertises genealogy resources including photographs, census records, and family trees. Zoar was settled in 1817; its communal society operated from 1819 to 1898.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Start with the Genealogy link on the village homepage. Contact zoarinfo@historiczoarvillage.com or 330-874-3011 for collection questions. The visitor center is at 198 Main Street, Zoar; tours and store hours have different seasonal schedules.

A question you can ask

Which sources support [family’s] connection to Zoar, and are original records or photographs available to consult?

Keep in mind

The published summary does not establish a complete catalog or unrestricted research access. Treat family trees as leads, and verify museum hours before visiting.

STOP 06 / RESEARCH HELP / DIGITAL DATABASES / OBITUARIES

Tuscarawas County Public Library genealogy service

Ask for help choosing the right local search before paying for another database.

What you can find

The genealogy portal links county marriage and obituary indexes through the genealogical society, the Ohio Amish Cemetery index, HeritageHub, Fold3, FamilySearch, and newspaper resources.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Email genealogy@tusclibrary.org with a focused question. Follow the portal’s database links for access requirements and consult the calendar for genealogy instruction.

A question you can ask

Which resource covers [person, community, event, and approximate year], and can I use it remotely?

Keep in mind

Licensed databases can require a library card or an on-site visit. A link to a statewide resource does not establish complete Tuscarawas County coverage.

Keep the evidence and the next step.

Save the repository, collection title, dates, box or volume and page, link, and what you searched. Follow an index entry to the full record. Keep uncertain identifications separate from established relationships.

TUSCARAWAS COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Tuscarawas County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed October 26, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Additional collection references

Official catalog descriptions checked October 25, 2026. These notes identify research routes, not completed name-level searches.

Gnadenhutten and Sharon Moravian church register

Moravian Archives lists ChReg 136, a register for Gnadenhutten and Sharon, Ohio, 1800–1869. Its inventory identifies baptisms, marriages and funerals, plus an alphabetical index on pages 410–474.

How to begin: Consult the church-register inventory and ask Moravian Archives in Bethlehem about ChReg 136, naming the person, event and approximate date. Confirm available research, reproduction or reading-room arrangements before traveling.

What remains uncertain: The inventory describes photocopies, German entries until November 1847 followed by English, and difficult legibility after 1865. This catalog listing does not establish online image access or cover the earlier mission's entire history.

COMMUNITY MEMORY

Community history groups and research leads

Local communities can help identify a place, photograph or possible source. These independently run groups are community leads, not catalogued archives or BWP partners. Keep the contributor, date, basis for an identification and original source together. Ask permission before republishing photographs or private contributions.

Facebook identities and visible access information checked October 25, 2026. Verification here concerns the group, not the accuracy of its members’ posts. No groups were joined and no messages were sent.

Private, discoverable Facebook group

A local history and genealogy community identified on Facebook. Use it as a starting point for a focused question about a surname, place or possible record source.

Access and rules: Facebook identifies this as a private, visible group. Membership approval is controlled by its administrators. Read the current rules before posting. Posted rules restrict promotion, advertising or selling; keep research questions on topic. Answer the membership questions.

Verification limits: The group identity and visible access information were checked. Member contributions and specific holdings were not independently verified. Ask permission before reusing an image or private contribution.

Dover school directories, prom programs and student newspapers

Dover High School records include selected student/teacher directories, 1937–1981; prom programs, 1938–1964; reunion material, 1937–1960; and selected Crimsonian issues, 1940–1964 plus 2015. Directories can contain addresses and school or department details.

How to access it

Use ARCHIVES: Dover High School A–C and the box/folder number. Ask the library to retrieve a particular directory or issue before visiting 525 North Walnut Street; phone 330-343-6123. The finding aid describes the collection as open for research.

Evidence limit: These are selected holdings, not continuous runs. Directory folders include 1937–38, 1943–44, 1945–46, 1948–54, 1955–64, 1966–67 and 1980–81; use exact years where possible. A reunion-class year is not necessarily the document creation year.

Archinal papers: church registers and named membership

Box 1 lists a St. John’s register, 1786–1872; a St. Paul’s Dover Township church book, 1847–1903; and St. John’s membership material, 1927–1928. It also contains family research, photographs and church-building ephemera.

How to access it

Request Archinal papers, Box 1, folders 1–3 for those church items. Compare transcriptions or published histories with underlying entries. The aid labels materials open for research; ask about scans and reproduction permissions.

Evidence limit: The unusual early date belongs to the catalog description and must not be treated as the founding date of a Dover congregation. The aid mixes originals, copies and published material, with inconsistent overall end dates; use folder dates rather than one broad planner span.
