PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Map sources and limits

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 3, 2026.

Sources checked October 23, 2026. Based on public institutional descriptions, not staff confirmation or an onsite visit. Confirm current access before traveling.

Bring one focused question.

Start with a name or place, approximate years, and the fact you want to establish. These are selected research starting points. A catalog, index, museum exhibit and original record provide different kinds of evidence.

STOP 01 / LOCAL REFERENCE / DATABASES

Brumback Library genealogy reference

Start with a focused local question.

What you can find

The library provides a dedicated genealogy contact and in-library Ancestry Library Edition access.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Email Genealogy@brumbacklib.org with names, dates and places; confirm available local materials before visiting.

A question you can ask

Which local index or newspaper can narrow this search?

Keep in mind

Ancestry Library Edition is an on-site resource; do not assume remote access or that every local record is digitized.

STOP 02 / PUBLIC ASSISTANCE / FAMILY CONTEXT

BGSU: mothers’ pensions and relief

Follow a family through assistance records.

What you can find

The county inventory lists Mothers’ Pension Docket and Records, 1916–1936, and Blind Relief Record, 1904–1906.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Send the series title and date to the Center for Archival Collections; book a research appointment and confirm copying arrangements.

A question you can ask

Does this docket identify children or a related case file?

Keep in mind

Surviving series cover specific programs and years, not every resident.

STOP 03 / ESTATES / DIVORCE / CORONERS

BGSU: court and probate microfilm

Look beyond a name index to a legal event.

What you can find

Holdings include Divorce Complete Records, 1902–1925; coroners’ inquests, 1880–1938; and estate, guardianship and naturalization series.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Select the exact series from the inventory and contact CAC at cac@libanswers.bgsu.edu before travel.

A question you can ask

Which docket leads to the surviving documents?

Keep in mind

Dates differ by series. Microfilm inventory listings do not promise complete case files.

STOP 04 / CONGREGATIONS / MEMBERSHIP

BGSU: Van Wert church records

Identify the congregation before searching a surname.

What you can find

Examples include Trinity Lutheran in Middle Point, 1853–1991 (MS 602); the Enterprise Methodist circuit, 1883–1911 (MS 381); and St. Mary Catholic, 1876–2001 (MS 887).

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Give CAC the manuscript number and request a research appointment or details of available copies.

A question you can ask

Which record types survive for this congregation and period?

Keep in mind

Collection dates do not establish that every baptism, marriage or burial survives; ask about restrictions.

STOP 05 / CLIPPINGS / NEWSPAPER INDEXES

Ohio Genealogical Society: Van Wert obituaries

Find a clipping collection transferred beyond the county.

What you can find

MSS 362 contains six boxes of indexed obituary clippings, broadly 1853–1957, including Ohio City Progress and Van Wert Bulletin material.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the finding aid to name a box, newspaper and year; ask OGS about its copy service or research visit.

A question you can ask

Is this obituary available in the physical files or Digital Library?

Keep in mind

The finding aid reports scanning began, not that everything is online. Later coverage is uneven; confirm current library hours.

STOP 06 / SCHOOL / RAILROAD / FARM CONTEXT

Van Wert County Historical Society museum

Put a family’s work and community into context.

What you can find

Brumback Library describes the museum’s local memorabilia, railroad caboose, one-room schoolhouse, agricultural equipment and nineteenth-century log house.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the library’s historical-society referral to confirm current museum visiting and research arrangements.

A question you can ask

Are photographs or object histories connected with this school or workplace available?

Keep in mind

A museum visit does not establish genealogical relationships; archival research access and copying need separate confirmation.

Keep the evidence and the next step.

Save the repository, collection title, dates, box or volume and page, link, and what you searched. Follow an index entry to the full record. Keep uncertain identifications separate from established relationships.

VAN WERT COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Van Wert County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed October 26, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.

County Home residents, accounts and hospital admissions

County Home registers, patient accounts and county-hospital admission certifications provide institutional-care leads.

How to access it

Request reels 81/177, 105 and 80; confirm access restrictions.

Evidence limit: These distinct series do not imply every resident or admission survives. Repository is in Wood County.

City indentures and Harrison Township enumeration

City Council indentures and the Harrison Township quadrennial enumeration offer named-person evidence beyond routine vital records.

How to access it

Request reel 1 for indentures and 171 for enumeration.

Evidence limit: Indentures omit 1876–1892 in the listed holdings; enumeration is Harrison only.

Middle Point, Ohio City and Willshire congregations

MS 602 Trinity Lutheran at Middle Point, MS 381 Methodist Enterprise Circuit at Ohio City, and MS 74 Zion Evangelical Lutheran at Willshire provide congregation-specific routes.

How to access it

Ask CAC for the finding aid and record types before requesting film.

Evidence limit: Collection spans do not mean every baptism, marriage or burial is covered; confirm language, gaps and restrictions.

MSS 362 Ohio City obituary clippings and indexes

MSS 362 contains six boxes of newspaper obituary scrapbooks and indexes. Box 1 separately lists Ohio City Progress annual files for 1921–1957; other boxes contain Van Wert titles with uneven coverage.

How to access it

Request MSS 362, box and file through onsite research or copy service.

Evidence limit: Clippings are not full newspapers. General county file 50 says no 1892, but additions overlap 1886–1893; do not declare all 1892 material absent. Later holdings are spotty.

Local museum research inquiry and schoolhouse context

Museum holdings and restored one-room schoolhouse offer local context. Society announces a planned history/genealogy research-library building and future display of David Humphreys Miller collections.

How to access it

Email webmaster@historicalvanwert.com for a focused collection inquiry; seasonal Sunday hours and group appointments are published.

Evidence limit: The new research library is planned, not confirmed open. Do not claim student registers or dated archival holdings without a finding aid.
