PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Map sources and limits

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 3, 2026.

Sources checked October 23, 2026. Based on public institutional descriptions, not staff confirmation or an onsite visit. Confirm current access before traveling.

Bring one focused question.

Start with a name or place, approximate years, and the fact you want to establish. These are selected research starting points. A catalog, index, museum exhibit and original record provide different kinds of evidence.

STOP 01 / LIBRARY / RESEARCH TOOLS

Herbert Wescoat Memorial Library

Build the search plan in McArthur.

What you can find

The library offers African American Heritage and Ancestry Library Edition among its research databases.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Visit 120 North Market Street or call 740-596-5691. Ancestry Library Edition requires in-library use. Ask staff about local-history titles before travel.

A question you can ask

Ask whether the library has a township history or newspaper source for your village and period.

Keep in mind

A current detailed local-history inventory was not located. Do not assume a title listed in an older external guide remains available.

STOP 02 / LOCAL RESEARCH / COMMUNITY

Vinton County Historical and Genealogical Society

Ask about evidence from small or vanished communities.

What you can find

The county identifies the society at 207 South Sugar Street, McArthur, as its local historical and genealogical organization.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Call 740-596-0253 before visiting. The county lists Wednesday–Friday 11–2, explicitly subject to change.

A question you can ask

Ask whether a surname, cemetery, school or furnace-community file survives for the place you are studying.

Keep in mind

A detailed current holdings inventory was not verified. Confirm the specific collection and research arrangements before making a trip.

STOP 03 / PHOTOGRAPHS / VANISHED PLACES

Vinton County history archive and CVB history guides

Locate a settlement before searching its residents.

What you can find

The CVB links a community digital archive of photographs, documents and memories, plus guides to coal mining, iron production, railroads, old schoolhouses and county place names.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the CVB history page and its archive referral. If the external archive fails to load, contact the CVB for a current link.

A question you can ask

Ask for the original caption or source behind a photograph of the relevant mine, school or village.

Keep in mind

The archive could not be opened during verification. Community memories and tourism narratives are leads, not proof of kinship.

STOP 04 / DEEDS / OIL AND GAS

Vinton County Recorder

Follow the land underneath a changing community.

What you can find

The office lists deed books/indexes from 1850–1985 in the office and online indexes beginning in 1986. It also records mortgages and oil/gas leases.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Call 740-596-4314 or email recorder@vintoncountyohio.gov; use the county’s Ava search link for indexed records.

A question you can ask

Ask how to consult an early deed index and order the referenced image.

Keep in mind

The page describes online indexes without images. Verify current image coverage; staff state they do not perform searches.

STOP 05 / ESTATES / HISTORICAL CASES

Vinton County Probate Court and Clerk of Courts

Match the record type to the correct court.

What you can find

Probate is the contact for estates and marriage-related historical requests. The separate Clerk’s CourtView system covers records from 1998 onward.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Contact Probate at 740-790-7003; contact the Clerk at 740-596-3001 for older Common Pleas records. Both are listed at 100 East Main Street, McArthur.

A question you can ask

Ask which historical index and surviving file series covers the named person and date.

Keep in mind

Pre-1998 Clerk records are not on CourtView. Probate historical coverage was not verified; do not treat the Clerk’s portal as a probate archive.

STOP 06 / BIRTH / DEATH RECORDS

Vinton County Health Department

Obtain the certificate behind an index entry.

What you can find

The department provides Ohio birth certificates and Vinton County death certificates and explicitly offers genealogy search assistance.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the vital-statistics page’s application or contact the registrar before ordering. The published vitals office hours are weekdays 8–4.

A question you can ask

Ask whether the event date falls within department holdings and what details are needed for a search.

Keep in mind

Confirm current charges and historical coverage. An event recorded in another county may require a different custodian.

STOP 07 / LOCAL COLLECTION / RESEARCH ROUTE

VINTON COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Vinton County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed October 26, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.
