PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

Other guide stops not shown on this map

These stops may be online collections, shared repositories or locations not yet confirmed for mapping. Follow the collection’s access instructions.

Map sources and limits

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 4, 2026.

Sources checked October 24, 2026. Additional collection descriptions and dates checked November 4, 2026. Earlier valid guide content retained; date spans do not guarantee complete holdings.

Start with one connection.

Bring a person, a place, approximate years, and one question. A township, congregation, school, or employer may reveal records a surname search misses. The custodian can be outside the county.

STOP 01 / Richmond / Wayne County

Morrisson-Reeves Library: local history

Account for a street-name change before deciding a family moved.

The local-history site provides business histories, biographies, historic images, newspaper-title history, and guidance on Richmond street-name changes in 1881 and on the west side in 1929.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Start with the local-history index and its current history-site link. Record the old and new street names, then ask library staff for the directory or map needed to confirm the address.

A question you can ask

Was this address renamed or renumbered, and which map confirms the change?

Keep in mind

A renamed street is not evidence of relocation. Interpret older addresses with contemporaneous maps and directories.

STOP 02 / Richmond / Quaker migration networks

Earlham College: Friends Collection and College Archives

Meeting records can connect families across county lines.

The Friends Collection contains Quaker books, manuscripts, family papers, diaries, letters, and monthly/yearly meeting records. Finding aids include an Indiana Yearly Meeting minutes index.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Search finding aids and request an appointment at least three business days ahead through archives@earlham.edu. Most material is not digitized. Outside researchers may visit in person.

A question you can ask

Which monthly meeting and record series covers this family’s arrival, departure, or marriage?

Keep in mind

The current policy says research and digitization services are unavailable for unaffiliated patrons. Staff can suggest local researchers. Confirm meeting custody and dates before traveling.

STOP 03 / Indianapolis / county-specific holdings

Indiana State Library: Wayne County research guide

Build a record checklist before ordering copies.

Selected holdings include pre-1906 naturalization records, a first land-entry book, marriages beginning in 1811, and an early probate/will index with probate court records for 1840–1844.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the county guide to identify titles and call numbers, then ask the State Library about consultation or a targeted lookup. Its linked catalog and microfilm lists are separate from the printed abstracts.

A question you can ask

Which original naturalization or probate record is referenced by this printed entry?

Keep in mind

These are selected holdings and published indexes, not a promise of complete surviving records. Follow references back to the underlying record.

STOP 04 / Earlham Friends Collection and College Archives

Earlham graduation programs and changing student publications

Digitized commencement and baccalaureate material reaches back to 1865. Sargasso yearbooks are listed for 1906 and 1909–2008; some are digitized. Print editions end in 2002, with DVD editions for 2003–2008.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the official digital-collections guide to reach the appropriate CONTENTdm or Hyku collection. Search both systems when a year is absent.

A question you can ask

Which item or series covers my person, community and year, and how can I consult it?

Keep in mind

Not all yearbooks are online. The yearbook list omits 1907–1908; DVD years are not print volumes. Graduation collections do not establish continuous annual coverage.

STOP 05 / Earlham Friends Collection and College Archives

Robinson-Henley family and business papers, FMS-39

The two-box collection spans 1827–1986, with correspondence, business papers, genealogy and photographs relating to Richmond and Carthage. It concerns the families of Richmond businessman Francis W. Robinson and Carthage farmer Joseph Henley.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Read the finding aid and request FMS-39 for an in-person visit. The finding aid states no access restrictions; confirm reading-room arrangements with the archivist.

A question you can ask

Which item or series covers my person, community and year, and how can I consult it?

Keep in mind

Family-specific, not a countywide name index. Carthage is outside Wayne County. The broad span is not continuous coverage; most archival material is not online. Outside patrons cannot assume remote research or digitization service.

Leave a trail another researcher can follow.

Save the repository, collection title, dates, volume, page or item identifier, link, and the date you consulted it. Follow an index to the original record when possible. Keep uncertain names and inferred relationships visibly separate from what the source states.

WAYNE COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Wayne County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed October 26, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.

Official catalog descriptions checked October 25, 2026. These notes identify research routes, not completed name-level searches.

Whitewater Monthly Meeting microfilm, MR-428

Earlham’s catalog identifies Wayne County Whitewater Monthly Meeting marriages, 1809–1852; births and deaths for 1858 and 1867–1926; and minutes in several runs between 1874 and 1925.

How to begin: Contact the Friends Collection and College Archives with identifier MR-428, Drawer 16, and the record type and years. Ask about viewing the microfilm and available copies before visiting.

What remains uncertain: The catalog describes one reel, not a complete digital collection. Confirm the meeting branch and relevant volume; the date spans do not imply every year or every resident is represented.

COMMUNITY MEMORY

Community history groups and research leads

Local communities can help identify a place, photograph or possible source. These independently run groups are community leads, not catalogued archives or BWP partners. Keep the contributor, date, basis for an identification and original source together. Ask permission before republishing photographs or private contributions.

Facebook identities and visible access information checked October 25, 2026. Verification here concerns the group, not the accuracy of its members’ posts. No groups were joined and no messages were sent.

preliminary microfilm inventory entry

Marriage Records (microfilm)

What it can tell you
Use the recorded marriage entry to investigate an event and the people named in it. Read the wording to distinguish a license from a return documenting the ceremony.

Selected listed years: 1811–1908, 1908–1921

Date overlap is a lead, not a guarantee of complete coverage.

How to search, request and interpret this collection

Coverage and gaps
Selected Indiana State Library holdings. Microfilm overview bounds can include indexes and multiple volumes; consult item-level entries for gaps. These are not countywide survival dates or an assurance of online images. Preliminary inventory entries may not reflect current holdings; confirm with the library.

How to search
Search both partners and spelling variants. Identify the correct volume, then inspect the full entry rather than stopping at an index.

How to retrieve it
Indiana State Library: Wayne County Marriage Records, volumes A–Y (1811–1908) or 1–18 (1908–1921), followed by the relevant book and page. These are the selected intervals used here, not the full inventory.

Practical access
This preliminary inventory warns that it may not be up to date. Give the State Library the title, volumes and years when asking about microfilm access or digital copies. Check the linked entry for gaps and confirm current availability before visiting.

If nothing turns up
A missing index entry does not establish that a marriage never occurred. Check the volume, spelling, event location and whether separate returns survive.

Read the collection source ↗

Source review: 2026-11-04. Search and interpretation suggestions are BWP guidance.

Then try this

For 1882–1894, ask about the separately listed marriage returns; the inventory also lists an 1882–1935 marriage index.

Earlham Sargasso yearbook holdings

What it can tell you
Explore a college connection through names, photographs and campus activities. An appearance can suggest a role or association; it does not by itself prove graduation.

Selected listed years: 1906, 1909–2008

Date overlap is a lead, not a guarantee of complete coverage.

How to search, request and interpret this collection

Coverage and gaps
Not all yearbooks are online. The yearbook list omits 1907–1908; DVD years are not print volumes. Graduation collections do not establish continuous annual coverage. These matched dates describe yearbooks, not every commencement program.

How to search
Use Earlham’s digital-collections guide to search both CONTENTdm and Hyku. Browse the relevant volume and activity pages when a name search fails.

How to retrieve it
Ask Earlham Friends Collection and College Archives for Sargasso, the exact year and the page or activity of interest. Confirm whether the volume is digitized or requires consultation.

Practical access
Use the official digital-collections guide to reach the appropriate CONTENTdm or Hyku collection. Search both systems when a year is absent.

If nothing turns up
Not every held volume is online. A failed keyword search can reflect transcription or indexing limits; the selected holdings omit 1907–1908.

Read the collection source ↗

Source review: Digital access route checked 2026-11-04; holdings retained from the existing guide. Search and interpretation suggestions are BWP guidance.
