Selected repository locations for present-day orientation. Numbers match the research stops below. Select a marker to open its stop. Locations are approximate, not entrances or driving directions. Grouped numbers identify nearby repositories; use the address key for individual locations.
Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

RESEARCH STOP 01
Newspaper microfilm with title changes and gaps
Collection details
The historical society lists Alcona County Review from April 27, 1877 onward; Lincoln Herald from January 9, 1908 to March 3, 1910; and Alcona County Herald from March 10, 1910 to January 27, 1993, with missing issues.
What to confirm
These are published holdings spans, not guaranteed complete runs. Confirm the latest available year and current microfilm access; the society supplies the holdings description.
RESEARCH STOP 02
Lincoln school, business and community photographs
Collection details
The Lincoln gallery includes a school image labeled 1903, a 1922 school picnic, streets, the depot and the elevator fire of January 27, 1922. These help place a family in its local setting.
What to confirm
Some captions are uncertain or undated; a mailed-postcard date is not necessarily the photograph date. Do not identify people from resemblance alone.
RESEARCH STOP 03
Mt. Joy cemetery: connect inscriptions to newspaper notices
Collection details
The second-edition Mt. Joy Cemetery book combines inscriptions, section and lot information, a map and newspaper death notices with compiled life chronologies.
What to confirm
This is a compiled publication, not a complete digital burial register. The society does not publish an inclusive date range for the book.
RESEARCH STOP 04
Bailey School: a surviving logging-community classroom
Collection details
The 1907 log schoolhouse retains its recitation bench, blackboard, maps and other original fittings. It operated west of Mikado through the 1940–1941 school year before later relocation.
What to confirm
The restored classroom supplies educational context, not a verified pupil-register collection. Its current location is not the original school district.
Prepare one focused request
Give the repository the locality, year, collection and specific question. Ask about the relevant volume or folder, gaps, access restrictions and copying costs. Save the citation and record what you searched, including searches with no result.
Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Alcona County records.
A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.
Sources reviewed November 1, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.
