PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 1, 2026.

Collection and access sources reviewed 2026-11-01. These are selected research routes, not complete county holdings or completed name-level searches.

RESEARCH STOP 01

Oscoda Township school census, teacher contracts and board minutes

Collection details

District No. 1 material includes board minutes for 1869–1878, teacher contracts for 1869–1880 and school censuses for 1869–1876. The name index gives event codes and page references.

What to confirm

These are indexed records, not full digital images. Expense entries were not indexed. Oscoda Township is in Iosco County, not Oscoda County.

RESEARCH STOP 02

Poor-farm admissions beyond census households

Collection details

The 1874–1893 Keeper of the Poor journal index can lead to age, residence, admission and discharge information.

What to confirm

The index reports that later journals had not been located. Its old service fees and custody statement should not be treated as current. Historical institutional language is not a modern diagnosis.

RESEARCH STOP 03

Baldwin Township and East Tawas justice dockets

Collection details

The 1878–1904 index covers the Baldwin Township justice docket, including East Tawas cases written in available spaces. People named may have lived elsewhere in the county.

What to confirm

A docket records legal steps rather than a complete trial transcript. The compiler flags difficult handwriting; inspect the source before relying on a spelling.

RESEARCH STOP 04

AuSable and Oscoda before and after the 1911 fire

Collection details

The museum interprets the 1911 fire, commercial fishing, logging, railroads and Wurtsmith Air Force Base. Its local-history offerings include an 1880 bird’s-eye map and photographs.

What to confirm

The website directs visitors to Facebook for current hours. Exhibition themes do not establish surviving personnel files or a searchable photograph catalog.

Prepare one focused request

Give the repository the locality, year, collection and specific question. Ask about the relevant volume or folder, gaps, access restrictions and copying costs. Save the citation and record what you searched, including searches with no result.

IOSCO COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Iosco County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed November 1, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Source, access and coverage limits

Search the free index, retain the name, code and page, then request the source page from HSGS. Research assistance at 6010 N. Skeel Avenue, Oscoda, is appointment-only; email huronshoresgs@yahoo.com.

Collection inventory or finding aid

Poor-farm admissions beyond census households

Listed years: 1874–1893.

Source, access and coverage limits

Send the indexed page and line to HSGS and ask about current copying fees. The older introduction places the original journal at the county Register of Deeds; confirm its present custody before visiting.

Keep in mind: The index reports that later journals had not been located. Its old service fees and custody statement should not be treated as current. Historical institutional language is not a modern diagnosis.

Collection inventory or finding aid

Baldwin Township and East Tawas justice dockets

Listed years: 1878–1904.

Source, access and coverage limits

Use the index to identify a page, then ask HSGS about its copy or contact Archives of Michigan about the original docket before traveling to Lansing.

Keep in mind: A docket records legal steps rather than a complete trial transcript. The compiler flags difficult handwriting; inspect the source before relying on a spelling.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.
