PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

119 North Fourth Street, West Branch, MI 48661

Contact the library about the newspaper date, microfilm reader and copy options before visiting 119 North Fourth Street. Scanning help is available at the circulation desk.

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 1, 2026.

RESEARCH STOP 01

Herald microfilm, burial plots and family biographies

Collection details

The local-history collection includes Ogemaw County Herald microfilm beginning in 1923, cemetery and burial-plot information, plat books and local-family biographies.

What to confirm

The library does not state a closing year or a complete issue inventory. Do not infer unbroken newspaper coverage from the 1923 start.

RESEARCH STOP 02

Atherton School photographs and township-book indexes

Collection details

Atherton School’s page links dated class photographs and transcribed pupil lists, including 1918–1919 and 1924–1926. Separate history pages index books on Churchill Township and other local communities.

What to confirm

Volunteer transcriptions and identifications are leads requiring comparison with originals. Dates are discontinuous. The school page explicitly notes sparse records and uncertain names; do not fill gaps.

RESEARCH STOP 03

West Branch Township property inventories

Collection details

West Branch Township Rural Property Inventory, 1935–1938, is identified as RG 2016-34.

What to confirm

This township series should not be conflated with the broader county Rural Property Inventory description for 1936–1942.

RESEARCH STOP 04

Rose City bank records and poor-relief accounts

Collection details

Rose City Bank records span 1913–1939 (RG 67-37). Superintendent of the Poor records include a journal, 1914–1922, and ledger, 1914–1923 (RG 2023-56).

What to confirm

Catalog spans do not show every customer or recipient. Bank and welfare records concern different activities and should be requested separately.

Prepare one focused request

Give the repository the locality, year, collection and specific question. Ask about the relevant volume or folder, gaps, access restrictions and copying costs. Save the citation and record what you searched, including searches with no result.

OGEMAW COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Ogemaw County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed November 1, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Atherton dated photographs and pupil-list examples

Listed years: 1910–1912, 1918–1919, 1924–1926, 1931, 1934–1941, 1943–1944, 1948, 1958–1959.

Source, access and coverage limits

Browse the school directory and history indexes online. Follow photo links and use the index to identify the underlying book or record.

Keep in mind: Selected dated transcriptions and photographs only, with gaps. Some list only eighth-grade pupils. Approximate 1923/24 list intentionally excluded from automatic matching.

Collection inventory or finding aid

West Branch Township Rural Property Inventory, RG 2016-34

Listed years: 1935–1938.

Source, access and coverage limits

Ask Archives of Michigan for the township series and parcel or owner detail needed; the records are held in Lansing.

Keep in mind: Township-specific, not countywide.

Collection inventory or finding aid

Rose City Bank records, RG 67-37

Listed years: 1913–1939.

Source, access and coverage limits

Ask the archives about the specific volume, access conditions and copying before travel.

Keep in mind: Record-series span; customer inclusion unknown.

Collection inventory or finding aid

Poor journal and ledger, RG 2023-56

Listed years: 1914–1923.

Source, access and coverage limits

Ask the archives about the specific volume, access conditions and copying before travel.

Keep in mind: Journal ends 1922; ledger extends to 1923. Not every recipient guaranteed.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.
