PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

Ask Archives staff in Lansing for the relevant finding aid and volume using the record group and date. Check access before travel; these catalog references are not a claim that page images are online.

  • Stop 3: Library of Michigan
See collection access instructions Not plotted.

Use the county bibliography’s call numbers in the ANSWER catalog or a reference inquiry. Ask about access to the rare atlas and newspaper microfilm before a Lansing visit; these are not all online scans.

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 3, 2026.

Collection and access sources reviewed November 1, 2026. These are selected research routes, not complete county holdings or completed name-level searches.

RESEARCH STOP 01

Local obituary help in the Else M. Kelly Genealogy Room

Collection details

The society maintains its research base in the library’s Else M. Kelly Genealogy Room and offers genealogical research and obituary lookups. Its current website describes pooled local family-history resources rather than a complete public collection inventory.

What to confirm

Room hours vary weekly. Do not substitute society meeting times for research availability or assume all collected family material is indexed. Confirm current fees before requesting work.

RESEARCH STOP 02

Poor-house, local justice and occupational records

Collection details

The August 2024 county guide lists poor-house inmates, 1887–1950; the Gladwin justice-of-the-peace docket, 1890–1894; and a nurses’ register, 1919–1956, in RG 2023-70. Assessment rolls, 1875–1895, are in RG 67-39; tax rolls, 1896–1945, are in RG 2016-43.

What to confirm

The docket covers the named local jurisdiction, not every township. Poor-house admission does not establish that a person had no relatives. Confirm restrictions, gaps and item-level coverage.

RESEARCH STOP 03

Atlas indexes and small-town newspapers outside the county

Collection details

The library lists the 1906 Standard Atlas with a separate index and the 1930 Hixson plat book. Its Beaverton Clarion holdings are 1895–1901 and 1915–1916, not a continuous 1895–1916 run. The Gladwin County Record obituary/death-notice index covers 1878–1990.

What to confirm

An index is not the original article or land record. Newspaper holdings and plat editions are selected; verify the exact issue or township sheet and any missing pages.

RESEARCH STOP 04

Rural school surveys and a schoolchildren’s Beaverton history

Collection details

The bibliography lists surveys of Gladwin and Beaverton rural agricultural schools, Cloyce McColley’s 1946 Elm Grove School and Community survey, and a 1942 Beaverton history prepared by pupils in grades four through six. Joe Van Dyke’s 1970 Knox School history covers Tobacco Township.

What to confirm

These are historical studies and publications, not established pupil registers. Publication years do not define the years covered; request the text and its sources before drawing family conclusions.

RESEARCH STOP 05

Logging photographs: follow the Ken Kerswill Collection credit

Collection details

The genealogical society’s website identifies a Sherman Township Ross Brothers logging-camp photograph, names foreman John Shorkey, and credits the Historical Society’s Ken Kerswill Collection. That is a concrete collection lead for logging-community research.

What to confirm

One caption does not establish a complete logging-employee index or the size and dates of the collection. Treat identifications as supplied captions until corroborated; ask whether the museum holds an original or a copy.

Prepare one focused request

Give the repository the locality, year, collection and specific question. Ask about the relevant volume or folder, gaps, access restrictions and copying costs. Save the citation and record what you searched, including searches with no result.

GLADWIN COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Gladwin County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed November 1, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Newspaper microfilm

Beaverton Clarion microfilm holdings

Listed years: 1895–1901, 1915–1916.

Source, access and coverage limits

Library of Michigan; ask about Michigan-library film loan

Keep in mind: 1902–1914 not listed; verify exact issues.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.
