Selected repository locations for present-day orientation. Numbers match the research stops below. Select a marker to open its stop. Locations are approximate, not entrances or driving directions. Grouped numbers identify nearby repositories; use the address key for individual locations.
Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

Stop 3: Archives of Michigan See collection access instructions Not plotted.
Contact the Archives in Lansing with the record group, type and year. Ask whether an index exists and which volume can be retrieved. Review current reading-room and reproduction instructions before visiting.
County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries ↗. Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads ↗. Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 1, 2026.
Collection and access sources reviewed November 1, 2026. These are selected research routes, not complete county holdings or completed name-level searches.
RESEARCH STOP 01
Dover School and local photographs at the historical complex
Collection details
The historical complex includes Dover School, the museum, a blacksmith shop and cabins. The society also publishes local-history articles, photographs and newsletters that can lead to named families and communities.
What to confirm
A preserved schoolhouse is not evidence that pupil registers survive. Ask specifically about documentary holdings and research appointments; exhibition hours are not a promise of staffed archival service.
RESEARCH STOP 02
Schoolhouse teachers and wartime letters in local publications
Collection details
The society lists Clare County Schoolhouses, primarily covering the county’s beginnings through the 1930s with teacher names and school photographs. War Comes Home brings together more than 200 World War II-era letters and death notices printed in the Clare County Cleaver and Clare Sentinel.
What to confirm
These are compiled publications, not complete original school or military files. Follow any entry to the cited newspaper or other source; a publication date is not the date of every document it contains.
RESEARCH STOP 03
Log marks and professional registers beyond a census search
Collection details
Clare’s state-held records include log marks, 1890–1906; livestock brands, 1901–1954; medical practitioners’ sworn statements, 1883–1899; and a professional register, 1900–1982, all listed in RG 99-78. Articles of association, 1872–1973, are in RG 99-79.
What to confirm
The guide was revised in October 2022. Confirm item-level dates and gaps. A mark or license identifies an administrative transaction, not necessarily a person’s entire working life.
RESEARCH STOP 04
Sheridan Township deaths and the Dwyer obituary collection
Collection details
Ask for Sheridan Township Death Records, 1895–1952, and the Dwyer Obituary Collection, 1900–1945. These named collections offer a more specific starting point than a general newspaper search.
What to confirm
The library lists the resources, not a digitized complete register. Township jurisdiction matters, and an obituary collection may omit deaths. Confirm the original source behind a copied entry.
RESEARCH STOP 05
Harrison school portraits and yearbooks before a class reunion
Collection details
The library lists Harrison High School yearbooks from the 1960s onward, selected senior-class portraits from the 1920s–1950s, and a 1965 class portrait. It also links local heritage-property tour material.
What to confirm
Decade ranges are broad descriptions, not a list of surviving editions. A class portrait is not an enrollment register; do not assign names without a key.
RESEARCH STOP 06
Farwell news and the Rotary Chronicle alongside Clare newspapers
Collection details
The society routes readers to CMU digital newspapers, including Farwell News, 1953–1971, and Rotary Chronicle, 1955–1975, alongside Clare and Harrison titles. Small-community and organization news can supply school, event and business leads.
What to confirm
Listed spans describe collections, not guaranteed issue completeness. OCR can miss names; inspect the page image and preserve the newspaper title and date.
Prepare one focused request
Give the repository the locality, year, collection and specific question. Ask about the relevant volume or folder, gaps, access restrictions and copying costs. Save the citation and record what you searched, including searches with no result.
Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Clare County records.
A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.
Sources reviewed November 1, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Keep in mind: Named collection span; confirm format and gaps.
Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.
