Selected repository locations for present-day orientation. Numbers match the research stops below. Select a marker to open its stop. Locations are approximate, not entrances or driving directions. Grouped numbers identify nearby repositories; use the address key for individual locations.
Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.
County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries ↗. Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads ↗. Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 1, 2026.
Collection and access sources reviewed November 1, 2026. These are selected research routes, not complete county holdings or completed name-level searches.
RESEARCH STOP 01
Obituary references with a route to the newspaper
Collection details
Clarke links its Mount Pleasant newspaper obituary index to Chippewa River District Library. CRDL describes the index as covering 1875 to the present; both libraries provide routes to newspaper microfilm.
What to confirm
This is an index, not complete obituary text or a guarantee that every death is included. Record the newspaper title, issue date and page before requesting an image.
RESEARCH STOP 02
Local faces, community names and a partially scanned county album
Collection details
The online Isabella history collection includes a named-communities index, Places and Faces Familiar (1906), and the 1884 Portrait and Biographical Album. The album scan includes the title page and pages 176–584.
What to confirm
The library explicitly excludes introductory biographies on pages 1–175; pages 231–233 and 371–374 were missing from its copy. Published biographies need corroboration and the digital volume is not complete.
RESEARCH STOP 03
Mount Pleasant Indian School: distinguish collected copies from original records
Collection details
The Native American education bibliography describes a Mount Pleasant Indian School collection made largely of copied reports, clippings, articles, excerpts and research notes about the school, staff and students. It also lists copies of three lists created by the National Archives.
What to confirm
These descriptions do not establish a complete pupil register or continuous attendance coverage. Ask about the provenance of each copied item and the location of its original; a school reference does not establish tribal citizenship.
RESEARCH STOP 04
Tribal community history, photographs and the Calendar of Research
Collection details
The Center’s published research guide describes historical documents, rare books, community photographs, treaties and land patents. A Calendar of Research indexes much of its community-history material, sometimes represented by copies or transcriptions in several formats.
What to confirm
The guide says this is not a genealogical repository, although its resources can assist family-history work. Access is not a promise that a requested record is open or that a family connection establishes tribal citizenship.
RESEARCH STOP 05
Mount Pleasant and Sacred Heart yearbooks: browse the actual editions
Collection details
Mount Pleasant High School PDFs list 1900, 1912, 1918–1919, 1923, 1925–1932 and 1948–2022. Sacred Heart lists 1916–1917, 1938 and 1948–2023. Browse portraits, teams, clubs and advertisements as separate evidence clues.
What to confirm
These are selected published yearbooks, not enrollment files. Missing editions must not be treated as proof that a student was absent. The two schools have different coverage.
RESEARCH STOP 06
Coldwater Township justice, property and voter records held locally
Collection details
RG 76-94 includes Coldwater Township justice dockets, 1872–1922; chattel mortgages, 1870–1926; assessment rolls, 1873–1965; and voter registration, 1868–1946. The state guide explicitly identifies these starred collections as held at Clarke, not Lansing.
What to confirm
These are township records with catalog date spans, not countywide indexes. Ask which volumes and years survive before assuming continuity.
Prepare one focused request
Give the repository the locality, year, collection and specific question. Ask about the relevant volume or folder, gaps, access restrictions and copying costs. Save the citation and record what you searched, including searches with no result.
Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Isabella County records.
A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.
Sources reviewed November 1, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.
Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.
