PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

Map sources and limits

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 1, 2026.

Collection and access sources reviewed November 1, 2026. These are selected research routes, not complete county holdings or completed name-level searches.

RESEARCH STOP 01

Big Rapids Township school census and road records

Collection details

RG 2007-49 lists school district census/statistical reports for 1910–1925 and 1926–1951, school tax reports for 1915–1921, township minutes for 1908–1921 and road proposals for 1918–1932. These offer a township-level route beyond county vital records.

What to confirm

The finding aid describes files, not a searchable pupil index. Its series dates do not establish uninterrupted survival or that every report names residents. Big Rapids Township is not interchangeable with the city.

RESEARCH STOP 02

Township tax lists and local family files

Collection details

The society library inventory identifies Colfax Township's 1890 tax rolls, Austin Township officials for 1908–1920, Grant Township treasurer material for 1913 and Hinton Township assessment indexes for 1904 and 1910–1911. Use the inventory's item numbers when asking about a particular locality.

What to confirm

This is a published society inventory, not a current item-level availability guarantee. A tax index is a route to an entry, not proof of a family relationship.

RESEARCH STOP 03

Remus and neighboring township history

Collection details

The society covers Remus and surrounding townships, including Wheatland, Hinton, Martiny and Millbrook. Its site provides the local-history brochure A Nation Within Itself in PDF and accessible text formats, alongside museum and oral-history information.

What to confirm

The page identifies the society's geographic interests, not a dated catalog of all manuscripts. Its request for donated documents does not prove that every kind of record is already held.

RESEARCH STOP 04

Logging claims that name people beyond a census

Collection details

The county guide identifies log-mark registrations for 1868–1885 in RG 69-54 and labor liens on logs for 1883–1886 and 1895–1912 in RG 69-59. These are targeted leads for logging work and disputes.

What to confirm

The separated lien date ranges contain a gap. A listed series does not establish that a particular worker appears or that the records are digitized.

RESEARCH STOP 05

City residents in water-rent books and justice dockets

Collection details

MSS-6 includes a water-rent book arranged by street for 1949–1950 (box 90), and justice dockets for 1877–1913, 1922–1929, 1924–1931 and 1930–1934. It also lists city tax rolls for selected years from 1904 to 1967. A street address or court date can be more useful here than a surname-only search.

What to confirm

The city collection differs from Big Rapids Township records. Tax volumes are unindexed and fragile; the finding aid says they are unsuitable for copying. The listed spans have gaps.

RESEARCH STOP 06

Grant Township landowners, with the missing years visible

Collection details

RG 2013-70 contains Grant Township assessment rolls for selected years between 1890 and 1970. The box list names individual early years, including 1890, 1891, 1893, 1895 and 1899; box 9 contains transfer assessment rolls for 1949–1960. Entries can connect a taxpayer to a legal land description and assessed property.

What to confirm

Do not treat 1890–1970 as a continuous run. For example, 1892 is not listed. Assessment values and a taxpayer name do not establish kinship.

RESEARCH STOP 07

Women’s community work in club scrapbooks and yearbooks

Collection details

MSS-13 documents the Big Rapids Women’s Club with photographs, press clippings, programs and administrative material. The finding aid lists club yearbooks for 1971–1991 and 1991–2012, minutes for 1971–1977 and 1979–1983, and dated scrapbook volumes. These can place women in civic networks beyond household records.

What to confirm

This is the club’s surviving archive, not a directory of all local women. The overall collection dates, 1934–2012, do not mean every series covers that span.

Prepare one focused request

Give the repository the locality, year, collection and specific question. Ask about the relevant volume or folder, gaps, access restrictions and copying costs. Save the citation and record what you searched, including searches with no result.

MECOSTA COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Mecosta County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed November 1, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Big Rapids Township school census

Listed years: 1910–1925, 1926–1951.

Source, access and coverage limits

Contact Ferris archives ahead of a visit, as the archives advises because of staffing constraints. Request RG 2007-49 and the specific school or road file; the school census material spans containers 1–3. Ask about copies and any access restrictions before travel. The current archives homepage places the reading room at Alumni 1001, 420 Oak Street, Big Rapids, rather than the older FLITE address still printed on some finding aids. Confirm the entrance when arranging materials.

Keep in mind: The finding aid describes files, not a searchable pupil index. Its series dates do not establish uninterrupted survival or that every report names residents. Big Rapids Township is not interchangeable with the city.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.
