Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 1, 2026.

Collection and access sources reviewed November 1, 2026. These are selected research routes, not complete county holdings or completed name-level searches.

RESEARCH STOP 01

Marion newspapers, maiden-name files and a personal diary

Collection details

The library lists Marion Press microfilm for 1903–2011, obituary, wedding and maiden-name files, historical photographs, a 1900 plat book and the Diary of Alice Fleming. Marion High School yearbooks are listed as a limited collection.

What to confirm

The newspaper span is not a guarantee that every issue survives. The library does not give comprehensive yearbook dates or diary coverage on this page.

RESEARCH STOP 02

Follow the former genealogical society's collections

Collection details

A Winter 2020 Michigan Genealogical Council notice reports the transfer of Osceola County Genealogical Society resources to this library. It highlights Civil War material, partial indexes to the 1884 and 1894 county censuses and a detailed Woodland Cemetery index, plus newspaper microfilm loaned by the Old Rugged Cross Historical Museum.

What to confirm

The transfer notice is historical. Confirm present access and specific film dates with the library. The census indexes are explicitly partial.

RESEARCH STOP 03

Mothers' pensions and guardianship petitions

Collection details

Osceola County RG 2022-49 includes mothers' pension cases for 1913–1932 and guardianship petitions for 1919–1923. The same accession has broader probate case files for 1870–1971 and probate calendars for 1870–1983.

What to confirm

These are series ranges, not a promise of a surviving file for every family. Guardianship alone does not establish that both parents had died. Ask about restrictions before requesting sensitive material.

RESEARCH STOP 04

Evart newspaper microfilm, cemetery files and county-farm leads

Collection details

Sylvan Township’s library description identifies Evart Review microfilm beginning in 1872, county-farm records, family histories and cemetery records for Evart, Osceola, Hartwick, Sylvan, Orient and Middle Branch, with some neighboring-county cemeteries.

What to confirm

The township page does not date the county-farm or cemetery records. Confirm the exact film issue and whether a county-farm item is an original record, copy or index. “To present” on a description is not a completeness guarantee.

RESEARCH STOP 05

LeRoy cemetery documentation and pioneer-family files

Collection details

The village’s society page says volunteers have catalogued local cemetery information and genealogies of area pioneer families. These offer a focused route for LeRoy-area families that may not be described individually in larger catalogs.

What to confirm

The online description supplies no inclusive years or surname inventory. Compiled genealogies need supporting sources; cemetery documentation should be checked against inscriptions and burial records where possible.

RESEARCH STOP 06

Follow a missing newspaper year to a second holding library

Collection details

The title-specific holdings page lists Tustin Times, 1902–1944; Tustin Topics, 1894–1903; Osceola County Democrat, 1886–1887 and 1889–1909; and several separate Reed City Clarion runs. This can help when a local collection lacks the town or year needed.

What to confirm

The holdings page is marked updated August 22, 2014. Its ranges describe reported holdings, not every issue, and should be reconfirmed. Do not turn the catalog’s “9999” continuation placeholder into an end year.

Prepare one focused request

Give the repository the locality, year, collection and specific question. Ask about the relevant volume or folder, gaps, access restrictions and copying costs. Save the citation and record what you searched, including searches with no result.

OSCEOLA COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Osceola County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed November 1, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.
