PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

Map sources and limits

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 1, 2026.

Collection and access sources reviewed November 1, 2026. These are selected research routes, not complete county holdings or completed name-level searches.

RESEARCH STOP 01

Lakeview yearbooks, local newspapers and community scrapbooks

Collection details

The library lists Lakeview High School yearbooks for 1927, 1937, 1940, 1949, 1951, 1957–1983, 1986–2006, 2008 and 2010–2023. Its searchable newspaper PDFs include Lakeview Enterprise, 1894–2003, and Coral News, 1898–1943, both with gaps. Addie Dubois scrapbooks from the 1930s–1940s have marriage, obituary, youth-group and picture indexes.

What to confirm

Missing yearbooks and newspaper issues must not be treated as continuous coverage. A scrapbook index points to an item, not proof of a relationship. Digitized newspaper holdings do not automatically mean remote access.

RESEARCH STOP 02

Edmore school books and state-census microfilm

Collection details

The library lists Edmore and Montabella yearbooks spanning 1923–2006, Edmore Times microfilm for 1939–1982, and Montcalm state-census microfilm for 1884 and 1894. Its list also identifies nonpopulation census material and a 1968 rural farm directory.

What to confirm

The combined yearbook span does not establish that every school or year survives. Keep state censuses separate from federal schedules and verify the specific nonpopulation schedule before ordering.

RESEARCH STOP 03

Stanton and Sheridan school books on a local research computer

Collection details

The library describes searchable digitized copies of Central Montcalm, Stanton and Sheridan yearbooks, alongside digitized Stanton and other local newspapers. Its genealogy page also links Montcalm naturalization resources under several dated headings.

What to confirm

The page does not enumerate yearbook dates or newspaper gaps, so these collections are not assigned a date range in the planner. A naturalization link title alone does not establish whether its content is an index, transcript or record image.

RESEARCH STOP 04

Greenville directories and newspaper runs

Collection details

The local-history inventory lists Greenville directories for selected years from 1904 through 2011, the Greenville Independent from August 1857 through December 1926, and Greenville Daily News from January 1927 onward. It distinguishes Montcalm birth indexes, 1870–1970, from original records at the courthouse.

What to confirm

Directory years are discontinuous. A newspaper span does not promise every issue. Indexes are finding tools, not substitutes for original certificates.

RESEARCH STOP 05

Greenville local-history archives

Collection details

The society confirms historical and genealogical research archives serving Greenville and the surrounding area. This offers a local enquiry route alongside the public library.

What to confirm

The public page does not provide a dated archival inventory. Ask which specific materials survive before assuming a family file or photograph exists.

RESEARCH STOP 06

Local military stories and objects

Collection details

The museum preserves stories and personal history of Greenville-area military service alongside uniforms and equipment. Its glider exhibit connects with the Greenville schoolchildren’s wartime fundraising story.

What to confirm

This is a museum lead for context and locally donated material, not a verified military personnel-record archive. No collection date span is published.

Prepare one focused request

Give the repository the locality, year, collection and specific question. Ask about the relevant volume or folder, gaps, access restrictions and copying costs. Save the citation and record what you searched, including searches with no result.

MONTCALM COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Montcalm County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed November 1, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.
