PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

Map sources and limits

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 1, 2026.

Collection and access sources reviewed October 31, 2026. These are selected research routes, not complete county holdings or completed name-level searches.

RESEARCH STOP 01

Otisco assessments and local school registers

Collection details

The library's genealogy pamphlet lists an indexed Otisco Township assessment roll for 1885; school examiners' and teachers' notes, 1891-1897; a teachers' daily register, March 1889-1894; and Marble School's daily register, 1895-1900. These are unusually specific leads for placing a household in a township or identifying children and teachers between censuses. Additional listed items include the city charter, an assessor's bond book, a health officer's disease record, and local photograph files.

What to confirm

The pamphlet's layout groups both microfilm and local files, so confirm format and retrieval arrangements. It does not establish complete school enrollment coverage or online access to these registers.

RESEARCH STOP 02

Ionia yearbooks, city directories, and institutional collections

Collection details

The society reports photographs, business records, directories, yearbooks, family collections, and government records. It specifically identifies high-school yearbooks and city directories as accessible on site. These can help separate people with similar names, trace an address or occupation, or place a student in a class before a more targeted inquiry into a business or institution. The collection is a promising local lead rather than a fully described county archive.

What to confirm

No year ranges are supplied. The society explicitly describes limited staffing, cataloging, storage, and research capacity; arrange access first. It recommends Ionia Community Library as an initial research stop and the genealogical society for family-specific inquiries.

RESEARCH STOP 03

Poor-farm residents and Belding death certificates

Collection details

The genealogy inventory lists Ionia County Poor Commission records of poor-farm residents, 1875–1943, on microfilm, and indexed Belding death certificates, 1921–1966. These offer routes beyond a general surname search.

What to confirm

Inventory spans do not establish complete coverage. Poor-farm records concern residents of that institution; Belding certificates are not countywide.

RESEARCH STOP 04

Silk-mill workers and the Belrockton boardinghouse

Collection details

The city museum occupies the 1906 boardinghouse built for unmarried women employed in Belding silk mills. Its exhibits cover the silk industry, local refrigerator manufacturing and early medical equipment.

What to confirm

This is a contextual research stop. The city overview does not establish surviving employee rosters, payroll or individual boardinghouse registers. Do not treat the building date as collection coverage.

RESEARCH STOP 05

Funeral-card files and rural-school research leads

Collection details

The society describes indexed funeral cards in its library and rural-school history, photographs and recollections in its newsletter. Its project page also describes indexing Odessa Township tax rolls beginning in 1877.

What to confirm

The project page was last edited in 2017. It reports three completed tax years without identifying them, so current status and exact coverage need confirmation. Church-record requests on that page are not proof of holdings.

Prepare one focused request

Give the repository the locality, year, collection and specific question. Ask about the relevant volume or folder, gaps, access restrictions and copying costs. Save the citation and record what you searched, including searches with no result.

IONIA COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Ionia County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed November 1, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Collection inventory or finding aid

Belding death certificates and index

Listed years: 1921–1966.

Source, access and coverage limits

Contact the library before visiting to confirm the film, index and reader access. Supply the person, approximate date and county or city jurisdiction.

Keep in mind: City coverage, not countywide; inventory span does not guarantee completeness.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.
