Selected repository locations for present-day orientation. Numbers match the research stops below. Select a marker to open its stop. Locations are approximate, not entrances or driving directions. Grouped numbers identify nearby repositories; use the address key for individual locations.
Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries ↗. Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads ↗. Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 3, 2026.

RESEARCH STOP 01
One-room schools and township records at Then and Now
Collection details
Then and Now explicitly lists Allegan County one-room schoolhouse records alongside high-school yearbooks, township histories, tax records, plat maps, photographs, and locally created databases. It also reports local newspapers reaching back to 1884, obituary files, and military material from the Civil War onward. This combination is useful for narrowing a family to a particular township and school district before requesting a specific pupil or property search.
What to confirm
No school-by-school inventory, inclusive tax dates, or collection identifiers are given. Newspaper coverage back to 1884 does not mean an uninterrupted run. Confirm the surviving years and whether materials are originals, copies, or compilations.
RESEARCH STOP 02
Saugatuck-Douglas school, oral-history, and property files
Collection details
The center lists Saugatuck High School yearbooks from 1948-2015 with missing years, nearly 200 oral-history items, biographies, and gravestone lists. Its archives also preserve address-based property files and the William Simmons collection of roughly 6,000 mid-century photographs. The collecting area extends beyond the two towns toward Fennville, Ganges, New Richmond, East Saugatuck, and Laketown Township, making this a useful place to investigate local households and buildings.
What to confirm
Catalog entries often have images but are not necessarily complete digital reproductions. Yearbook gaps are explicit. Oral recollections and compiled property files need comparison with contemporary records before establishing relationships or ownership.
RESEARCH STOP 03
Plainwell graduates, church members and in-library newspaper searches
Collection details
The archive inventory lists annotated Plainwell graduates, 1873–1955; Baptist church members, 1835–1881; and Sanborn hard copies, 1884–1928. Digitized Plainwell Enterprise issues span 1886–1974 and are searchable on library computers.
What to confirm
The microfilm reader is listed as unavailable. Sanborn dates indicate map editions rather than annual coverage. Yearbook gap lists conflict within the inventory, so confirm any particular year with staff.
RESEARCH STOP 04
Named portrait negatives from four local photographers
Collection details
The society describes portrait negatives from Joe Sherman, Nick DeVries, Russ Culver and Cecil Davis, approximately 1935–2009, covering people in Allegan and Kalamazoo counties. Published name lists cover 1935–1985 and 1985–2006.
What to confirm
The negative collection and published index spans differ. A name match requires checking the associated details. Holdings do not imply every resident was photographed, and reproduction is not automatically free.
RESEARCH STOP 05
Allegan newspaper runs through the library digital collection
Collection details
The library provides a dedicated digitized-newspaper entry point. The Library of Michigan identifies Allegan Journal, Allegan Journal Tribune and Allegan Gazette among its digitized runs.
What to confirm
The verified overview does not establish exact first and last dates for every title. Check the displayed issue before citing it; OCR and absent issues can limit surname searches.
Prepare one focused request
Give the repository the locality, year, collection and specific question. Ask about the relevant volume or folder, gaps, access restrictions and copying costs. Save the citation and record what you searched, including searches with no result.
Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Allegan County records.
A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.
Sources reviewed November 1, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Keep in mind: Two published index spans 1935–1985 and 1985–2006; not all people or years necessarily represented. Collection reportedly extends approximately to 2009.
Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.
