Selected repository locations for present-day orientation. Numbers match the research stops below. Select a marker to open its stop. Locations are approximate, not entrances or driving directions. Grouped numbers identify nearby repositories; use the address key for individual locations.
Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.
Stop 1, Stop 4: Hastings Public Library 227 E. State Street, Hastings, MI 49058

Stop 3: Historic Charlton Park 2545 S. Charlton Park Road, Hastings, MI 49058
Contact collections staff before requesting originals. Begin with the museum collection page and its linked diary project; identify the date or topic of interest.
Stop 5: Putnam District Library 327 N. Main Street, Nashville, MI 49073
Arrange local-history-room access rather than assuming normal library hours apply. The library describes limited monthly openings outside winter; ask about the desired yearbook and current digital access.
County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries ↗. Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads ↗. Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 3, 2026.
Collection and access sources reviewed October 31, 2026. These are selected research routes, not complete county holdings or completed name-level searches.
RESEARCH STOP 01
Rural-school notebooks and Hastings municipal records
Collection details
The Michigan Room inventory lists rural-school notebooks for all 16 townships, the City of Hastings, and Barry County Normal. It also identifies County Board of Supervisors, Hastings Fire Department, City of Hastings, and Barry County Historical Society records. These local files offer leads for school communities, public service, and civic activity. Alumni records begin in 1884 in the inventory, and the room also holds Hastings High School yearbooks and Fortnights.
What to confirm
The inventory does not supply inclusive dates for the school notebooks or municipal series. A notebook may be a compilation rather than an original register; establish provenance and individual coverage before citing it.
RESEARCH STOP 02
Yankee Springs justice docket and Freeport hotel register
Collection details
The official Barry County guide identifies the Yankee Springs Township justice docket, 1915-1939, as RG 2006-50, and the Freeport House hotel register, 1915-1918, as RG 68-25. The docket offers a township-level legal lead; the hotel register is a distinctive possibility for travelers, workers, or visitors who do not appear as settled households in local census research. Search these as separate collections with different purposes and creators.
What to confirm
The guide does not identify digitized images, a name index, or entry-level details. It is a summary revised August 2022. Neither of these entries carries the asterisk used for records held at Western Michigan University.
RESEARCH STOP 03
Matthew Baird diaries and family letters
Collection details
The museum holds Matthew Baird diaries and letters. Its diary project presents material from 1861–1865, connecting a local Civil War soldier with family correspondence and everyday concerns.
What to confirm
The museum has no scheduled research hours. The online project is selective, not a complete transcription or proof that every wartime date survives.
RESEARCH STOP 04
1873 plat maps and digitized local newspapers
Collection details
The library portal includes the 1873 Barry County atlas and plat maps alongside local-history exhibits and digitized newspapers. The library reports adding held Hastings Banner and Sun and News issues through 2023, plus Nashville and Maple Valley titles.
What to confirm
The 1873 atlas is a dated property snapshot. Newspaper digitization reflects the library holdings, not a guarantee of every issue, title or year. The portal can be intermittently unavailable.
RESEARCH STOP 05
Nashville photographs, maps and school publications
Collection details
The local history room preserves Nashville-area photographs, maps and documents. Library resources point to Nashville and Maple Valley school yearbooks and a digitized 1969 Nashville centennial book.
What to confirm
No reliable complete yearbook range is stated. The centennial publication is retrospective local history, not a substitute for original records.
Prepare one focused request
Give the repository the locality, year, collection and specific question. Ask about the relevant volume or folder, gaps, access restrictions and copying costs. Save the citation and record what you searched, including searches with no result.
Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Barry County records.
A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.
Sources reviewed November 1, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Matthew Baird diaries and letters
Listed years: 1861–1865.
Source, access and coverage limits
Contact collections staff before requesting originals. Begin with the museum collection page and its linked diary project; identify the date or topic of interest.
Keep in mind: Selective published diary project; contact museum for surviving dates and appointment.
Enter through the library digital-collection page. Search a township or place as well as a surname; contact the Michigan Room for held issues or material not available online.
Keep in mind: One atlas date; not continuous property ownership coverage.
Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.
