PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

Map sources and limits

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 1, 2026.

Collection and access sources reviewed October 31, 2026. These are selected research routes, not complete county holdings or completed name-level searches.

RESEARCH STOP 01

Coldwater Historic Architecture Survey, 1976-1979

Collection details

This online collection documents more than 2,500 Coldwater properties photographed and assessed during 1976-1979. Records describe architectural materials, style, condition, and alterations. For example, item 5905 covers 109 S. Jackson and dates its survey to May 8, 1976. Use an address from a directory, deed, or census to investigate the physical setting of a family's later residence.

What to confirm

The library explicitly says not every city property was documented. The survey records a 1970s assessment, not necessarily the building's appearance during an earlier ancestor's lifetime, and does not by itself prove occupancy or ownership.

RESEARCH STOP 02

Bethel Township photographs by Edward W. Baldwin

Collection details

The Pictures of Bethel Township collection identifies photographs by Edward W. Baldwin, born in 1890, and gives overall coverage of 1922-1925. Its 21 listed items include Bethel's schoolhouse and church, Baldwin's birthplace, the Lobdell home on Strongs Island, and a store described as formerly owned by Uncle George Lobdell. Several individual captions explicitly have no date despite the collection-level span.

What to confirm

This is one photographer's small local selection, not a township population record. Captioned relationships are statements to corroborate, and collection dates should not silently replace an individual image's undated status.

RESEARCH STOP 03

Branch County school yearbooks

Collection details

The public yearbook archive covers available volumes through 1988, with separate branches for Bronson, Coldwater, Quincy, and Union City high schools and some middle-school material. The collection includes Bronson's Viking volumes beginning with the listed 1941 issue. Browse the school series rather than assuming that a broad surname search examines every photographed or printed page.

What to confirm

The library says missing pre-1989 volumes are issues it does not have. Its stated online cutoff reflects copyright permissions: 1989-present volumes are excluded unless permission is obtained. That cutoff is a digitization policy, not evidence that the school ceased publication.

RESEARCH STOP 04

Civil War diaries and letters with publication dates distinguished

Collection details

The Civil War collection includes David Joshua Easton letters, Byron Densmore Paddock material labeled 1861-1865, and Henry C. Gilbert diaries covering 1863-1864. The Gilbert item credits Alcetta Gilbert Campbell and carries a 1990 publication date.

What to confirm

1990 is the cataloged publication date, not the diary period. Read editorial context and distinguish a later edition from original manuscripts. These personal narratives do not constitute a countywide soldier roster.

RESEARCH STOP 05

Coldwater directories for people, businesses and institutions

Collection details

The directory collection lists Coldwater volumes for 1860-1861 and 1874-1875. The earlier volume also includes Hillsdale and Monroe; the later listing describes business, resident and institutional sections.

What to confirm

These are individual editions, not continuous annual coverage. Residents omitted by the compiler may still have lived locally. Confirm the town heading because the early volume includes multiple communities.

RESEARCH STOP 06

Rural-school and working-life oral histories

Collection details

Historical-society recordings include Fern Bickford Kingsley on rural schools, Elmer Dobson on rural life in May 1978, and Coldwater cement-factory employee Earlin Jolley interviewed January 29, 1981. Use speakers' place and employer references to form a focused documentary search.

What to confirm

Interview dates are recording dates, not spans of school or employment records. Recollections require corroboration; the collection does not promise enrollment registers or personnel files.

Prepare one focused request

Give the repository the locality, year, collection and specific question. Ask about the relevant volume or folder, gaps, access restrictions and copying costs. Save the citation and record what you searched, including searches with no result.

BRANCH COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Branch County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed November 1, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.
