Selected repository locations for present-day orientation. Numbers match the research stops below. Select a marker to open its stop. Locations are approximate, not entrances or driving directions. Grouped numbers identify nearby repositories; use the address key for individual locations.
Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries ↗. Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads ↗. Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 1, 2026.
Collection and access sources reviewed October 31, 2026. These are selected research routes, not complete county holdings or completed name-level searches.
RESEARCH STOP 01
Marshall municipal, church, and school material
Collection details
The library's local-history description identifies high-school yearbooks from 1899 onward, selected church records on microfilm, city budgets and ordinances, other Marshall reports, and Sanborn maps for 1888-1931. Its digital Local History Archive includes yearbooks, directories, and church records. These sources can connect an address or congregation to a school cohort and show the municipal setting around a family's documented residence.
What to confirm
The library explicitly labels its directory and atlas runs incomplete. Do not treat the broad date ranges as guarantees for every year. The holdings description was available, but direct access to the online resources could not be fully tested. Contact the library if a digital link is unavailable.
RESEARCH STOP 02
Battle Creek area digitized yearbooks
Collection details
Willard lists Battle Creek Central, 1894-2016; Harper Creek, 1956-2016; Lakeview, 1925-2016; Pennfield, 1970-2014; Springfield, 1956-1990; and St. Philip, 1942-2011. The project combines library, school, and alumni-association holdings. Use a school and approximate graduation year to look for a portrait, class listing, team, or club association that can separate residents with similar names.
What to confirm
The site says it excludes the latest ten years for privacy. Listed beginning and ending dates do not guarantee an unbroken run, and the page-request service is not an open-ended genealogical search.
RESEARCH STOP 03
Albion city documents and neighborhood photographs
Collection details
Albion keeps selected ordinances, budgets, council proceedings and cemetery records. Its photograph holdings include the historical society archives transferred in 1997 and Justin Glathart’s more than 2,000 local slides, photographed over three decades beginning in the 1950s.
What to confirm
The library explicitly is not an official city records division. Municipal date coverage is unstated. Slide dates are broad, and photographs do not identify every resident. Obtain written publication permission and donor-specific credits.
RESEARCH STOP 04
Named Albion veterans’ recorded recollections
Collection details
The Veterans Project, completed in 2002, recorded local participants with service in World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Grenada and the Persian Gulf. The official page lists interviewees and marks some available DVD copies.
What to confirm
2002 is the project completion date, not the veterans’ service period. The page describes digitization in progress without a current completion date. Oral testimony is retrospective evidence, not a substitute for service records.
RESEARCH STOP 05
Battle Creek homes and African American community images
Collection details
Willard’s Historical Images collections include street-arranged photographs of buildings within Battle Creek’s circa-1940 boundaries and the Dorothy Martich Black History Photo Archive documenting the local African American community.
What to confirm
Circa 1940 is approximate and bounded by the city limits then. The Martich archive has no complete date span on this overview. Buildings or group photographs alone do not prove a person lived at an address.
RESEARCH STOP 06
Battle Creek newspaper index for a targeted article search
Collection details
The current Dean O. Barnum archive page dates Willard’s local newspaper index from 1967 through March 2012. It can help identify an obituary date before requesting the original article.
What to confirm
This is an index, not full text or a guarantee every person or newspaper item was indexed. Coverage ends in March 2012, not December. Newspaper database remote access requires a card; full access is on-site.
Prepare one focused request
Give the repository the locality, year, collection and specific question. Ask about the relevant volume or folder, gaps, access restrictions and copying costs. Save the citation and record what you searched, including searches with no result.
Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Calhoun County records.
A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.
Sources reviewed November 1, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Collection inventory or finding aid
Willard Library Newspaper Index, 1967-March 2012
Listed years: 1967–2012.
Source, access and coverage limits
Follow the Newspaper Index link on the archive page, then request the underlying article from Willard. For pre-1967 obituaries, the library asks researchers to supply an approximate year.
Keep in mind: This is an index, not full text or a guarantee every person or newspaper item was indexed. Coverage ends in March 2012, not December. Newspaper database remote access requires a card; full access is on-site.
Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.
