PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

  • Stop 1: Little Traverse History Museum
100 Depot Court, Petoskey, MI 49770

Contact the museum before research so staff can retrieve relevant material; archive appointments are available beyond the exhibition season.

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 1, 2026.

Collection and access sources reviewed 2026-11-01. These are selected research routes, not complete county holdings or completed name-level searches.

RESEARCH STOP 01

Teacher journals and family scrapbooks

Collection details

The current collection page features Mary Dalm’s journal as a Sheridan kindergarten teacher, 1918–1920, Frances Pailthorp’s art-teaching scrapbooks and a 1908 vacation scrapbook.

What to confirm

These are selected personal collections, not complete school pupil registers. The former research.html inventory is no longer linked from the redesigned homepage.

RESEARCH STOP 02

Gathman and Haynes studio negatives

Collection details

The studio archive documents portraits, weddings, families and events. Its online database helps locate negatives before requesting scans.

What to confirm

Most negatives are not scanned. The studio collection is distinct from the separate Haynes personal-photograph acquisition.

RESEARCH STOP 03

School annuals and local-history vertical files

Collection details

Local History Room holdings include Petoskey school annuals, newspapers, directories, cemetery material, scrapbooks and photographs.

What to confirm

Most yearbooks are digitized, not necessarily every issue. Newspaper holdings start in 1878 but no continuous end date was verified.

RESEARCH STOP 04

Cemetery-hosted newspapers and local photographs

Collection details

The cemetery website provides research routes for newspapers, obituary and burial information, photographs and area history.

What to confirm

The research application returned a loading error during verification. No searchable date range or individual result is claimed.

Prepare one focused request

Give the repository the locality, year, collection and specific question. Ask about the relevant volume or folder, gaps, access restrictions and copying costs. Save the citation and record what you searched, including searches with no result.

EMMET COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Emmet County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed November 1, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Collection inventory or finding aid

Listed years: 1947–2003.

Source, access and coverage limits

Browse the online collections database and retain item identifiers. Email beth@harborspringshistory.org to arrange access with the curator at least two weeks before a visit. Ask about scans, copies, fees and use permissions; the materials do not circulate.

Keep in mind: Broad studio span; not a complete event or resident register.

Collection inventory or finding aid

Mary Dalm journal, Sheridan kindergarten teacher

Listed years: 1918–1920.

Source, access and coverage limits

Online collection page; ask museum for archival access.

Keep in mind: Personal teacher journal; not a complete student register.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.
