Selected repository locations for present-day orientation. Numbers match the research stops below. Select a marker to open its stop. Locations are approximate, not entrances or driving directions. Grouped numbers identify nearby repositories; use the address key for individual locations.
Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries ↗. Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads ↗. Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 3, 2026.

RESEARCH STOP 01
Newspapers and a focused genealogy-room request
Collection details
The library holds local newspaper microfilm beginning in 1883, early twentieth-century marriage and death material, census resources and cemetery listings.
What to confirm
The linked policy was approved in 2005. It warns that most newspapers are not indexed and broad searches are impractical; confirm fees and volunteer schedules rather than relying on the old document.
RESEARCH STOP 02
Local photographs beyond the online sample
Collection details
The museum reports more than 4,000 photographs, with only a sample online. Subjects include businesses, street scenes and community organizations. Spies Heritage Hall also houses a research library.
What to confirm
The photograph page says tours are closed for the season while other pages still show summer hours. Confirm access. Online examples are not the entire collection.
RESEARCH STOP 03
Baptism, marriage and burial requests through the parish
Collection details
The parish offers a request route for baptismal, wedding and burial records. A family event may be traceable even when it is absent from a general surname search.
What to confirm
The parish controls confidential records and notes that genealogy exceptions may apply. No public holdings dates are supplied; do not assume a complete run or unrestricted inspection.
Check volume-level gaps and jurisdiction; voting records exclude people ineligible to vote.
RESEARCH STOP 05
Log marks and an Indian River hotel register
Collection details
RG 54-9 includes log marks, 1885–1952, and the New Alcove Hotel register for 1900. These may connect a lumber business or traveler to a local setting.
What to confirm
A log mark identifies ownership, not a full employee list. The hotel register is one year only.
Prepare one focused request
Give the repository the locality, year, collection and specific question. Ask about the relevant volume or folder, gaps, access restrictions and copying costs. Save the citation and record what you searched, including searches with no result.
Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Cheboygan County records.
A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.
Sources reviewed November 1, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Mentor Township poll books
Listed years: 1882–1896.
Source, access and coverage limits
Request the series and record group from the Archives before traveling to Lansing. These are original-record leads, not online name indexes.
Keep in mind: Eligibility and volume gaps affect representation.
Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.
