PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Map sources and limits

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 1, 2026.

Collection and access sources reviewed October 31, 2026. These are selected research routes, not complete county holdings or completed name-level searches.

RESEARCH STOP 01

Township voters, assessments and municipal censuses

Collection details

The county guide identifies Burton Township electors, 1859-1881, and poll books, 1880-1898 (RG 63-30); Flushing Township electors, 1882-1917 (RG 73-30); and Clayton Township electors, 1882-1946 (RG 97-326). Separate municipal censuses survive for Flint in 1927, Fenton in 1964, and Flushing city and township in 1965 (RG 81-50). These provide specific alternatives when federal census intervals leave a residence question unresolved.

What to confirm

The guide is a series-level inventory, not a name index or guarantee of uninterrupted coverage. Voter lists exclude people who could not vote; municipal census dates are isolated snapshots.

RESEARCH STOP 02

School, neighborhood and organization context

Collection details

The local collection includes school yearbooks, city and county directories, village and city histories, local publications and histories of organizations across Genesee County. Pair a school name or street address with a person's surname to investigate community connections beyond the vital-record trail. The library also holds Michigan county histories and cemetery readings, with broader genealogy coverage useful for tracing incoming families.

What to confirm

The overview does not give school-by-school yearbook runs or directory dates. Ask for the precise title and year before treating an absence as evidence.

RESEARCH STOP 03

Flint Journal files and community manuscript collections

Collection details

Sloan holds Flint Journal microfilm from the newspaper's beginning through 2006, with an index only for 1963-1983. Staff photographs generally cover the mid-1950s through early 1990s and are arranged by name or subject. Community collections include Christ Episcopal Church papers, Atwood family papers, school and business material, and organizational records. These are promising for a specific neighborhood, church, club or named event.

What to confirm

The museum explicitly does not hold individual automobile employee records. Collection dates vary. Journal image publication requires MLive permission; obtaining a research copy does not establish publication rights.

RESEARCH STOP 04

Flushing Depot: school photographs, family histories and local newspapers

Collection details

Archives include school and neighborhood photographs, family histories, oral histories, Flushing Observer and Flushing Patrol material, directories, maps and records relating to businesses, churches and civic groups.

What to confirm

The society approved a collection-wide digitization project in February 2026. Work is ongoing; do not assume the whole archive is online or that newspaper runs are complete.

RESEARCH STOP 05

Flint city, union and neighborhood organizations beyond a personnel file

Collection details

City of Flint records document urban renewal and municipal services. Local organizational collections include UAW Local 599, Dom Polski and the Rotary Club, with additional civil-rights papers.

What to confirm

Collection-level descriptions do not establish an individual’s membership or employment. Genesee probate records formerly here have transferred to the Archives of Michigan.

RESEARCH STOP 06

Flint’s Black newspapers: three separate surviving date spans

Collection details

The digital newspaper collections include Flint-Brownsville News, 1939–1942; Flint Spokesman, 1946–1952; and Bronze Reporter, 1953–1963. Look for community organizations, social notices and local events.

What to confirm

These are distinct title spans, not continuous coverage of Flint’s Black community. Later Spokesman material described as planned is not included here.

RESEARCH STOP 07

Fenton school names and newspaper gaps at the A.J. Phillips Museum

Collection details

The genealogy room has cemetery information and a Fenton graduate-name list beginning in 1869. The city describes Fenton Independent newspapers from 1869 onward, with a substantial gap from the 1920s into the 1950s.

What to confirm

The published description does not identify exact missing issue boundaries or a final newspaper year. A graduate list is not a complete school register.

Prepare one focused request

Give the repository the locality, year, collection and specific question. Ask about the relevant volume or folder, gaps, access restrictions and copying costs. Save the citation and record what you searched, including searches with no result.

GENESEE COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Genesee County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed November 1, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.
