PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

  • Stop 1: Ironwood Carnegie Library
235 East Aurora Street, Ironwood, MI 49938

Start with the library newspaper portal; try spelling variants and browse nearby issues when OCR misses a name. Ask the library about missing issues and image access.

Repository information · Map position source
  • Stop 2: Bessemer Public Library
411 South Sophie Street, Bessemer, MI 49911

Contact the library inside City Hall before visiting. Specify newspaper title and exact date, and ask which format is currently available and where it can be consulted.

  • Stop 3: Ironwood Area Historical Society
150 North Lowell Street, Ironwood, MI 49938

Ask the society which school and mining items survive, whether names are indexed, and whether research needs an appointment separate from museum visiting.

  • Stop 4, Stop 5: Michigan Tech Archives and Copper Country Historical Collections
1400 Townsend Drive, Houghton, MI 49931-1295 Not plotted.

Request an appointment before traveling to Houghton. Cite the record group or collection and ask staff about retrieval, restrictions and copying.

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 1, 2026.

Collection and access sources reviewed 2026-11-01. These are selected research routes, not complete county holdings or completed name-level searches.

RESEARCH STOP 01

Ironwood newspapers: search names, then inspect the issue

Collection details

The library links to a searchable NewspaperArchive portal. Browse the available titles and issue dates to follow families, schools and local organizations beyond a name index.

What to confirm

The portal is a selection, not proof that every newspaper or year survives. Full image access and complete title coverage were not tested.

RESEARCH STOP 02

Bessemer Herald: original papers, microfilm and digitization questions

Collection details

A locally authored grant essay describes Bessemer Herald issues, microfilm and an incomplete Google News digital run, with a proposal to fill gaps. The historical society and library are the starting points for checking a particular issue.

What to confirm

The essay discusses a project, not proof it was completed. Do not assume microfilm equipment, all issues or a current online database are available.

RESEARCH STOP 03

Ironwood Depot: ask about school and mining material

Collection details

The city confirms a historical museum in the depot. NMU’s society directory identifies local mining and Luther L. Wright High School information as research leads.

What to confirm

The directory is not a current item-level inventory. No yearbook span, personnel file or student record series is promised.

RESEARCH STOP 04

Local officials and nurses beyond the census

Collection details

Gogebic County RG 90-183 includes township and city officer bonds, 1889–1893 and 1914–1949, and nurses registrations, 1912–1955. These can help establish civic service or occupational context.

What to confirm

The Archives of Michigan county guide marks these records as held at Michigan Tech. Dates are catalog spans, not proof every person or year appears.

RESEARCH STOP 05

Poor-relief records with a documented gap

Collection details

The county guide lists Superintendent of the Poor records for 1887 and 1897–1914 in RG 90-183, held at Michigan Tech.

What to confirm

The unlisted 1888–1896 interval is not treated as covered. Ask the archivist what record types and access restrictions apply before expecting a named case.

Prepare one focused request

Give the repository the locality, year, collection and specific question. Ask about the relevant volume or folder, gaps, access restrictions and copying costs. Save the citation and record what you searched, including searches with no result.

GOGEBIC COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Gogebic County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed November 1, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Superintendent of the Poor, RG 90-183

Listed years: 1887, 1897–1914.

Source, access and coverage limits

Request an appointment before traveling to Houghton. Cite the record group or collection and ask staff about retrieval, restrictions and copying.

Keep in mind: Gap preserved. Catalog dates alone do not establish named case-file coverage.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.
