Selected repository locations for present-day orientation. Numbers match the research stops below. Select a marker to open its stop. Locations are approximate, not entrances or driving directions. Grouped numbers identify nearby repositories; use the address key for individual locations.
Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.
Stop 1: Iron County Historical Museum 100 Brady Avenue, Caspian, MI 49915
Contact archives@ironcountymuseum.org at 100 Brady Avenue, Caspian. Ask for the name and period needed and any research charge. The visit page distinguishes year-round archives from seasonal exhibits. Map marker identifies the museum grounds, not the archives entrance.

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries ↗. Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads ↗. Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 1, 2026.
Collection and access sources reviewed 2026-11-01. These are selected research routes, not complete county holdings or completed name-level searches.
RESEARCH STOP 01
Caspian family files, obituaries and newspaper copies
Collection details
The research center lists family-history files, vintage photographs, an obituary collection and copies of The Reporter. These can lead from a surname toward community and family context.
What to confirm
No complete issue or surname inventory is published on the research page. Confirm specific years, copying and volunteer availability.
RESEARCH STOP 02
Crystal Falls burial indexes, mine maps and Diamond Drill
Collection details
Harbour House lists vital indexes, Evergreen Memorial Cemetery burial records, mine-location and railroad maps, plus its Diamond Drill newspaper archive.
What to confirm
Ask which years and formats survive. Exhibit opening hours do not guarantee an unscheduled research appointment.
RESEARCH STOP 03
A second route to selected Iron County Museum records
Collection details
MS-605 is a microfilm selection of Iron County Museum archival collections and indexes. The repository register gives an overall span of 1825–1987.
What to confirm
This is a broad collection span, not continuous coverage or a complete copy of the museum archive. Ask staff for the reel contents that fit the question before booking.
RESEARCH STOP 04
Follow naturalization through more than one document
Collection details
RG 96-216 includes declarations of intention, 1885–1952; petitions, 1906–1956; and certificate stubs, 1907–1926.
What to confirm
These are separately described series. An intention is not proof citizenship was granted; check the later petition and outcome. Confirm file gaps.
RESEARCH STOP 05
Rural property inventories and Crystal Falls veterans
Collection details
The county guide lists Rural Property Inventory records, 1936–1942, RG 72-76. It also points to Crystal Falls GAR post 421 within RG 63-19, whose listed overall dates are 1876–1945.
What to confirm
The GAR range describes the cited collection, not verified inclusive dates for every post. Ask for the post-level inventory; do not infer membership from residence.
Prepare one focused request
Give the repository the locality, year, collection and specific question. Ask about the relevant volume or folder, gaps, access restrictions and copying costs. Save the citation and record what you searched, including searches with no result.
Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Iron County records.
A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.
Sources reviewed November 1, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Request the record group and particular volume from the Archives of Michigan in Lansing before travel. A catalog entry does not mean the records are digitized.
Keep in mind: Inventory span; confirm township and parcel coverage. Not a deed chain.
Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.
