PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

Map sources and limits

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 1, 2026.

Collection and access sources reviewed 2026-11-01. These are selected research routes, not complete county holdings or completed name-level searches.

RESEARCH STOP 01

Adams Township pupils: names, ages and attendance

Collection details

MS-796 holds four daily attendance registers covering 1871–1878. The entries record pupils’ names, ages and attendance.

What to confirm

These are selected surviving registers, not proof every child attended or every school is represented. Request MS-796, box 1; the finding aid lists four folders.

RESEARCH STOP 02

Calumet and Hecla workers: cards, families and housing

Collection details

MS-002 includes workforce and company housing records. Its inventory separately lists employee-card groups dated 1870–1894, 1878–1914, 1907–1970 and 1915–1936. The Keweenaw Time Traveler project links nearly 40,000 digitized cards with other historical data; cards may name relatives and birthplaces.

What to confirm

Overlapping card groups do not mean a complete workforce census, and the digital subset is not the whole collection. The corporate span 1855–1973 is not the date range of every employee file.

RESEARCH STOP 03

County planning, committees and correspondence

Collection details

MS-090 covers 1957–1977, including board and committee minutes, county planning and economic-development material, financial records and correspondence.

What to confirm

This collection is selected county-administration material, not a complete run of all county proceedings or vital records. Identify the committee and issue before requesting folders.

RESEARCH STOP 04

Lake Linden newspapers and directories beyond online indexes

Collection details

The research room holds maps, volumes of the Daily Mining Gazette, Portage Lake Gazette and Calumet News, plus some Polk directories the society says are absent from other databases.

What to confirm

Ask for exact years and issues: the site gives no complete holdings list. Seasonal museum hours differ from research-room access.

RESEARCH STOP 05

Finnish American congregations, college records and family context

Collection details

The archive provides an online catalog and collection finding aids. Its current digitization project includes Suomi Synod minutes and congregational correspondence, early Suomi College yearbooks, student newspapers, photographs and course catalogs.

What to confirm

The project is a small selection, not evidence the full archive is online. Do not infer an individual’s enrollment, congregation or ethnicity from the existence of a collection.

Prepare one focused request

Give the repository the locality, year, collection and specific question. Ask about the relevant volume or folder, gaps, access restrictions and copying costs. Save the citation and record what you searched, including searches with no result.

HOUGHTON COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Houghton County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed November 1, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.
