Selected repository locations for present-day orientation. Numbers match the research stops below. Select a marker to open its stop. Locations are approximate, not entrances or driving directions. Grouped numbers identify nearby repositories; use the address key for individual locations.
Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

RESEARCH STOP 01
County vital indexes with a Houghton County handoff
Collection details
The museum lists county birth, marriage and death indexes beginning in 1875 and extending into the early 1970s. Earlier records point toward Houghton County.
What to confirm
Indexes are leads to the underlying entries, not certified copies. The imprecise ending date is not used for automatic year matching; early registration has gaps.
RESEARCH STOP 02
Strieter maternity scrapbook and working-life records
Collection details
Ask about the Strieter maternity-home scrapbook, Captain James Bendry business ledgers, early county poll books and Sirard Logging records.
What to confirm
Access to the fragile scrapbook has been limited by preservation and storage needs. The museum hopes to offer appointments after its new research library and staffing are in place; this is not a current appointment service. Exact years and surviving volumes still need confirmation.
RESEARCH STOP 03
A local photo archive organized by community
Collection details
The society offers a free online archive of historic county photographs, organized by place and period. Use town names as well as surnames to explore businesses, streets and community settings.
What to confirm
An image caption is a research lead. A scene or unidentified group does not establish that an ancestor appears in it.
RESEARCH STOP 04
School observers and early Baraga newspaper ephemera
The school file belongs to a civic organization, not a pupil register. The clippings are selected material, not a continuous newspaper run.
RESEARCH STOP 05
State census years and cemetery survey files
Collection details
The county guide lists the 1884 and 1894 state censuses in RG 92-219, plus county cemetery files dated 1962–1976 in RG 83-53.
What to confirm
The cemetery range dates the files, not necessarily the deaths or burials. These discrete census years are not a continuous census series.
Prepare one focused request
Give the repository the locality, year, collection and specific question. Ask about the relevant volume or folder, gaps, access restrictions and copying costs. Save the citation and record what you searched, including searches with no result.
Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Baraga County records.
A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.
Sources reviewed November 1, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Source, access and coverage limits

Keep in mind: Two separately listed census years; confirm surviving localities.
Request the record group and particular volume from the Archives of Michigan in Lansing before travel. A catalog entry does not mean the records are digitized.
Keep in mind: Dates describe the files, not the burial dates represented.
Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.
