Selected repository locations for present-day orientation. Numbers match the research stops below. Select a marker to open its stop. Locations are approximate, not entrances or driving directions. Grouped numbers identify nearby repositories; use the address key for individual locations.
Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

Stop 3, Stop 4: Peter White Public Library 217 N. Front Street, Marquette, MI 49855
At 217 N. Front Street, use the Local History Research Room during its Wednesday noon–4 drop-in period, or ask reference staff to retrieve material whenever the library is open. Contact refdesk@pwpl.info. Follow the library’s links to UPLINK for online material.
Stop 5: Central Upper Peninsula and Northern Michigan University Archives 228 Harden Hall, 1401 Presque Isle Avenue, Marquette, MI 49855
Browse the digital collection through NMU's library guide. For physical materials, contact archives@nmu.edu with the mine, locality and period before planning a visit to 228 Harden Hall. NMU's construction notice warns that box retrieval may be slower and collections may sometimes be inaccessible. Confirm current access and request needed boxes ahead. UPLINK also hosts other organizations' collections, so use each item's contributing repository rather than assuming NMU holds every original.
County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries ↗. Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads ↗. Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 1, 2026.
Collection and access sources reviewed 2026-11-01. These are selected research routes, not complete county holdings or completed name-level searches.
RESEARCH STOP 01
Burial permits, church entries and pioneer interviews
Collection details
Marquette burial/removal permits span 1889–1932. Church holdings include St. John’s Catholic marriages, 1872–1899, and St. Paul’s Episcopal marriages/burials, 1867–1875. Chase interviews record pioneer recollections from the 1920s.
What to confirm
Church coverage is parish-specific. Interviews are retrospective accounts, not contemporaneous proof of every remembered event.
RESEARCH STOP 02
Mine fatalities and wartime newspaper references
Collection details
A mine-fatality index starts in the 1860s; mine-employment records survive for only some companies. A separate World War II article index covers 1940–1946.
What to confirm
Ask which mine and years survive. Neither resource lists every employee or servicemember.
RESEARCH STOP 03
Digitized city directories and Mining Journal issues
Collection details
The library links extant directories, 1873–2005, and the Mining Journal digital collection, 1868–February 1989. Its microfilm listing extends to 2019.
What to confirm
Extant directories are not annual coverage. Digital and microfilm endpoints differ. UPLINK blocked automated retrieval during verification, so check the linked viewer before relying on remote access.
RESEARCH STOP 04
Railroad, maritime and neighborhood research files
Collection details
The local-history room lists the Wesley Perron Railroad Collection, Bennett Maritime Collection, McClintock Darter-Dace Naval Collection, maps, yearbooks and local people/subject indexes.
What to confirm
Series dates require an item-level check. The Marquette County Genealogy Society collection moved out in August 2022; do not direct researchers here for that society’s collection.
RESEARCH STOP 05
Cleveland-Cliffs company reports, plans and photographs
Collection details
NMU’s current library guide identifies a Cleveland-Cliffs digital collection of company annual reports, maps, plans and photographs documenting nineteenth- and twentieth-century iron mining. These can explain how a mine, worksite or company community changed.
What to confirm
Company reports supply industrial and place context, not a complete employee record series. No person-level employment or exact annual coverage is claimed from the overview.
Prepare one focused request
Give the repository the locality, year, collection and specific question. Ask about the relevant volume or folder, gaps, access restrictions and copying costs. Save the citation and record what you searched, including searches with no result.
Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Marquette County records.
A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.
Sources reviewed November 1, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.
