Selected repository locations for present-day orientation. Numbers match the research stops below. Select a marker to open its stop. Locations are approximate, not entrances or driving directions. Grouped numbers identify nearby repositories; use the address key for individual locations.
Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries ↗. Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads ↗. Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 1, 2026.
Collection and access sources reviewed 2026-11-01. These are selected research routes, not complete county holdings or completed name-level searches.
RESEARCH STOP 01
Township schools in captioned photographs and local accounts
Collection details
The Early School Days presentations cover Breen and Breitung townships, Iron Mountain, Felch, Norway, Waucedah and West Branch. They provide school-history context and visual clues for identifying a school community.
What to confirm
These are illustrated historical compilations, not comprehensive enrollment registers. Check captions and underlying sources before identifying a pupil or assigning a photograph date.
RESEARCH STOP 02
Business gazetteers and geographically organized photographs
Collection details
Cummings’ business listings compile selected gazetteer editions between 1879 and 1928. The library also organizes historical photographs by county locality, useful for following an employer or neighborhood.
What to confirm
The gazetteer series is intermittent, not annual. A business listing does not show every worker or household. Treat compiled descriptions as leads back to their original sources.
RESEARCH STOP 03
Local-history room and newspaper retrieval with a current access warning
Collection details
City directories, compiled obituaries and local histories complement newspaper microfilm. The library’s current page warns that Iron Mountain Daily News and early Dickinson reels are away for digitization.
What to confirm
Do not promise onsite access to the affected reels. Digitization announced for summer 2026 does not establish completion; the current published warning still applies.
RESEARCH STOP 04
Mine aid funds and local justice dockets
Collection details
RG 56-10 includes the Cundy Mine aid fund, 1898–1904, and Aragon Mining Club cash book, 1903–1906. RG 71-95 includes civil/criminal justice dockets, 1889–1915.
What to confirm
Aid and cash-book entries are not complete employee rosters. Confirm name indexes and surviving volumes. A separate Breitung docket, 1880–1885, is held in Lansing and concerns the township before Dickinson County formed.
Prepare one focused request
Give the repository the locality, year, collection and specific question. Ask about the relevant volume or folder, gaps, access restrictions and copying costs. Save the citation and record what you searched, including searches with no result.
Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Dickinson County records.
A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.
Sources reviewed November 1, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Keep in mind: Edition labels are publication coverage, not a business observation for every year; verify the relevant edition.
Contact archives@nmu.edu with the record group, township and year before traveling to 228 Harden Hall, Marquette. Current construction can delay retrieval; ask staff to pull the required volumes in advance. Most holdings are physical, not digitized. Staff confirmed on November 2, 2026 that the collections floor remains under construction, with completion expected by February 2027. This is an estimate, not a guaranteed reopening date; confirm retrieval and reading-room access before travel.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.
