PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 1, 2026.

RESEARCH STOP 01

Central Mine school census: children between federal censuses

Collection details

MS-787 is a school census ledger dated 1877–1890, naming children ages 5–19 in the Central Mine school district and recording their ages annually.

What to confirm

A school census is not an attendance register. The original was transferred from Houghton County Historical Society to Michigan Tech; request MS-787 rather than assuming it remains at the donor repository.

RESEARCH STOP 02

Eagle Harbor school governance and expenses

Collection details

MS-292 contains school-district minutes for 1853–1895 and expense entries for 1871–1917 in one volume, including the district’s founding meeting.

What to confirm

These are governance and financial records, not a comprehensive student register. The two functions have different date spans.

RESEARCH STOP 03

Eagle Harbor pupil files and voter registers

Collection details

MS-701 separates school reports for September 1943–May 1947, student files for 1933–1945, monthly registers for September 1934–May 1947, and township voter records for 1928–1932.

What to confirm

Use the folder dates, not the collection’s broader 1918–1947 heading. Ask staff about access and copying for individual pupil files.

RESEARCH STOP 04

Grant Township officials: two surviving bonds

Collection details

MS-661 preserves an 1866 highway-commissioner bond for Frank Mayer and an 1867 constable bond for William Bodinus.

What to confirm

Only two bonds are described. This is not a general township officeholder register or continuous run of township records.

RESEARCH STOP 05

Central photographs and Gay’s schoolhouse community history

Collection details

The society’s captioned Central photograph album includes the band, churches, miners, buildings and reunions. Its Schoolhouse at Gay museum interprets the community’s milling, fishing, lumbering and school history.

What to confirm

Historic photographs are contextual evidence, not automatic identifications. Image reuse requires permission from the named custodian. The museum description does not establish that pupil registers are held there.

Prepare one focused request

Give the repository the locality, year, collection and specific question. Ask about the relevant volume or folder, gaps, access restrictions and copying costs. Save the citation and record what you searched, including searches with no result.

KEWEENAW COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Keweenaw County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed November 1, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.
