Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 1, 2026.

RESEARCH STOP 01

Township and rural-school records at Mitchell

Collection details

The township shelf list identifies an Allen Township assessment roll for 1859, Cambria Township death register for 1897-May 8, 1913, Jefferson Township voter registrations, and a District 9 school assessor's book for Pittsford and Wright townships, 1868-1938. These are unusually specific alternatives when a countywide name search stalls. The school book may help establish the district associated with a household; inspect its actual entries before assuming it names pupils.

What to confirm

The online list does not establish whether each item is an original, copy, or transcription, and gives no date span for the Jefferson voter registrations. Confirm format and availability before travel.

RESEARCH STOP 02

School yearbooks, class pictures, and reunion records

Collection details

The school inventory lists Camden Frontier class pictures for 1953-1980 and graduates for 1982-2000; early Hillsdale High School Skirmisher volumes include 1907, 1913, 1916-1918, 1920-1924, and 1926. It also identifies the Osseo Ossianic for 1929 and Pittsford Blue and White volumes for 1922-1924. Class and reunion material can distinguish same-name residents through school, cohort, and photographs.

What to confirm

This is a holdings list, not an online page-image collection or a complete run. Missing years should not be interpreted as evidence that someone did not attend. A yearbook appearance alone does not establish parentage.

RESEARCH STOP 03

Congregation registers beyond a countywide surname search

Collection details

The township shelf list identifies St. Peter's Episcopal registers, 1855-1900, and First Presbyterian Church of Reading records, 1858-1904. Other listed church material lacks precise dates.

What to confirm

Confirm whether the item is an original, transcript or copy and which rites or membership entries it contains. These are collection spans, not proof of continuous registration.

RESEARCH STOP 04

Towns funeral register before statewide death certificates

Collection details

The microfilm inventory identifies the Towns Funeral Register for 1875-1895 in Drawer 2. It provides a focused route to undertaker evidence alongside civil death and cemetery records.

What to confirm

The inventory does not identify all fields, a name index or the precise community served. Ask staff to confirm scope before assuming coverage of a particular township or death.

RESEARCH STOP 05

Local microfilm of naturalization, divorce and estate records

Collection details

Drawer 2 lists Hillsdale County naturalizations for 1846-1929, divorces for 1891-1942, probate for 1835-1929 and wills for 1865-1902. These offer local access leads when a courthouse or statewide trip is impractical.

What to confirm

The shelf list does not establish complete case coverage, indexes or unrestricted access. Confirm reel numbers and surviving case dates; a will collection is distinct from the larger probate file.

Prepare one focused request

Give the repository the locality, year, collection and specific question. Ask about the relevant volume or folder, gaps, access restrictions and copying costs. Save the citation and record what you searched, including searches with no result.

HILLSDALE COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Hillsdale County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed November 1, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.
