PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

Map sources and limits

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 1, 2026.

Collection and access sources reviewed November 1, 2026. These are selected research routes, not complete county holdings or completed name-level searches.

RESEARCH STOP 01

Port Austin school newsletter and township history

Collection details

The library's Local History portal offers local documents, newspapers, scrapbooks and picture collections. The Huron County Historical Society specifically identifies Port Austin High School yearbooks from the 1960s-1980s and The Breeze school newsletter from the 1940s-1960s, together with cemetery records, landowner information, obituaries and postcards. The school newsletter is a useful additional lead when a student is absent from an available annual.

What to confirm

The decade ranges are the historical society's description, not a verified issue-by-issue inventory. Individual digital items were not fully inspected. Confirm specific years and download availability with staff.

RESEARCH STOP 02

Harbor Beach photographs and community records

Collection details

The library maintains a Digital Local History Collection. The Huron County Historical Society describes its holdings as Harbor Beach High School yearbooks, local building and organization histories, cemetery records, plat books and newspapers from the 1860s-2000. Its in-person holdings include local photographs and the Leonard 'Pic' DeFrain collection. Ask about the specific business, street, organization or school associated with a family, including photographs that may not be indexed by surname.

What to confirm

The broad newspaper dates come from the historical society's directory and do not establish uninterrupted coverage. Individual digital items were not fully inspected. Confirm exact years, image identifications and reproduction terms with the library.

RESEARCH STOP 03

Bad Axe commencement bulletins and rural-school history

Collection details

The county historical society identifies Bad Axe High School commencement bulletins from 1904 onward, rural-school histories, family histories, Sanborn maps and local ephemera at the library.

What to confirm

The commencement span is a collection description, not proof of an unbroken annual run. Availability of individual school files and reproductions needs confirmation.

RESEARCH STOP 04

Sebewaing and Unionville newspaper access

Collection details

The county historical society identifies access to the Sebewaing Blade and Unionville Crescent through Newspapers.com and microfilm, along with local genealogy material.

What to confirm

Exact title coverage has not been established. Do not infer home subscription access or a complete newspaper run. The older library website is unreliable; use the phone and current cooperative directory.

RESEARCH STOP 05

Pigeon clippings, obituaries and community photographs

Collection details

The society describes newspaper clippings, obituaries, photographs and local recollections for Pigeon and nearby communities. Its research center is a route to material that may not appear in a statewide name index.

What to confirm

The cited inventory and address are from society newsletters published in 2017 and 2019. They substantiate the collection route, but current hours and the location of a requested item need confirmation; no continuous date range is established.

Prepare one focused request

Give the repository the locality, year, collection and specific question. Ask about the relevant volume or folder, gaps, access restrictions and copying costs. Save the citation and record what you searched, including searches with no result.

HURON COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Huron County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed November 1, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

open-ended collection span

Bad Axe commencement bulletins

Listed years: 1904–2026.

Source, access and coverage limits

Ask for a particular graduation year, rural school or street rather than a general surname search. The library is at 200 South Hanselman Street, Bad Axe; call 989-269-8538 to arrange help locating the materials.

Keep in mind: Source says 1904-present; 2026 is research-year cap, not verified latest surviving bulletin. Do not imply complete annual coverage. The commencement span is a collection description, not proof of an unbroken annual run. Availability of individual school files and reproductions needs confirmation.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.
