PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 1, 2026.

Collection and access sources reviewed October 31, 2026. These are selected research routes, not complete county holdings or completed name-level searches.

RESEARCH STOP 01

Lapeer school yearbooks and Oakdale documentation

Collection details

The library lists Lapeer school yearbooks from 1908 for most years, and Oakdale resources including a cemetery map and index, newspaper-article binders, photographs, maps, census lists and employee newsletters. County Press microfilm covers most years from 1879-2008, with digital copies from 2009 forward. These collections can connect a school-age resident, institution-associated person or local event to dated community evidence.

What to confirm

Yearbooks concern Lapeer schools, not every county district. Oakdale clippings are chronological but unindexed. This is a local-history collection, not a promise of access to individual medical or institutional case files.

RESEARCH STOP 02

Township histories, landowner indexes and newspaper names

Collection details

The society maintains township and town histories, plat maps, historical atlases, landowner indexes, cemetery records, donated family histories and a large obituary collection. Its newspaper microfiche is accompanied by a name index covering the earliest issues through the 1950s. This makes a useful follow-up when an online surname search fails or when the relevant place is a rural township rather than Lapeer city.

What to confirm

The holdings overview does not specify every newspaper title or the date span of each index. Many resources are not online. Confirm exact volumes and coverage rather than assuming complete county records.

RESEARCH STOP 03

Almont Herald microfilm and uncataloged family scrapbooks

Collection details

Almont Herald microfilm covers 1886–1977. The local-history room also describes about 100 scrapbooks, original photographs, correspondence and family material.

What to confirm

The newspaper span is not an issue-by-issue completeness statement. Some photographs and papers are uncataloged; absence from an online search does not establish absence from the room.

RESEARCH STOP 04

Marguerite de Angeli papers and photographs with Lapeer connections

Collection details

The author’s archive includes manuscript and artwork material, photographs and memorabilia. It offers a focused route into the author’s Lapeer connections and people documented in her papers.

What to confirm

This is a personal literary collection, not a general index of Lapeer residents. Check reproduction permission and item descriptions before reusing images.

RESEARCH STOP 05

Metamora buildings and street photographs as address evidence

Collection details

The society’s online village history pairs historical photographs with buildings and businesses, including a street view dated about 1873. Its published local history also has an online name index.

What to confirm

A building history can help place a directory or deed address. It does not identify every occupant, and building construction dates are not collection coverage dates.

Prepare one focused request

Give the repository the locality, year, collection and specific question. Ask about the relevant volume or folder, gaps, access restrictions and copying costs. Save the citation and record what you searched, including searches with no result.

LAPEER COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Lapeer County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed November 1, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Collection inventory or finding aid

Almont Herald microfilm

Listed years: 1886–1977.

Source, access and coverage limits

Ask staff about the basement history room and microfilm reader before visiting. Supply names, dates and an Almont-area location when requesting help.

Keep in mind: The newspaper span is not an issue-by-issue completeness statement. Some photographs and papers are uncataloged; absence from an online search does not establish absence from the room.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.
