PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

Map sources and limits

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 1, 2026.

Collection and access sources reviewed November 1, 2026. These are selected research routes, not complete county holdings or completed name-level searches.

RESEARCH STOP 01

County tax records, directories and photograph files

Collection details

The museum’s research collection includes county tax records, city directories, genealogy and subject files, maps and photographs. These can support a focused property, business or neighborhood investigation.

What to confirm

The public research page does not supply item-level date spans. Ask which tax year, directory or photograph file is available before booking.

RESEARCH STOP 02

Newspaper microfilm and a tightly scoped library request

Collection details

The local-history collection includes school yearbooks, city directories, plat books and county newspapers on microfilm beginning in March 1871.

What to confirm

The starting date is not proof of a complete newspaper run. The library does not undertake general family reconstruction or lend these local-history materials through interlibrary loan.

RESEARCH STOP 03

Kaleva school history and Finnish-American family photographs

Collection details

The museum describes an extensive photograph collection, family-history exhibits and Finnish-American community material. Its online school history derives from a document by teacher Della Dickson and names rural schools involved in consolidation, including Tin Can, Jouppi Standard, Dorn and Gilson.

What to confirm

The school account is a retrospective narrative, not an enrollment register. The website does not establish surviving pupil files or a complete photo index.

RESEARCH STOP 04

Log marks, midwives and the records of local work

Collection details

RG 2000-73 includes log-mark records, 1880–1914; medicine, surgery and midwife registrations, 1900–1926; and nurse registrations, 1911–1958. The guide also lists Silas Overpack business records, 1896–1916, in Manuscript Collection 64-57.

What to confirm

Registration records concern licensed or recorded practitioners, not everyone working in a trade. The guide is a finding-aid route, not proof that these volumes are digitized.

RESEARCH STOP 05

Arcadia-area school photographs and a school-location map

Collection details

The Schools Maps page presents a 1940s area school map, a Gabel School District 1 photograph dated 1914 and a circa 1933–1934 class photograph with a transcribed name key. It also shows a Pierport class in May 1904 and places school histories alongside photographs.

What to confirm

This is a community historical compilation, not an official pupil register. Some identifications retain question marks. The page also includes Wood School in neighboring Benzie County; do not treat every entry as Manistee County.

RESEARCH STOP 06

Commercial-building histories by street address

Collection details

The city publishes a 2007 commercial historic-district survey and a 2018 addendum. The addendum contains address-based forms with historic business names, estimated building dates, alterations and cited information sources, including entries on Maple and River streets.

What to confirm

These are retrospective architectural surveys, not a complete business directory or resident list. A building’s estimated construction date is not the date a particular family occupied it.

Prepare one focused request

Give the repository the locality, year, collection and specific question. Ask about the relevant volume or folder, gaps, access restrictions and copying costs. Save the citation and record what you searched, including searches with no result.

MANISTEE COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Manistee County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed November 1, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Contact the Archives with the occupation, person, years and record-group number. Confirm the relevant volume, index, restrictions and availability before a trip to Lansing.

Keep in mind: Company records do not guarantee that every employee or customer appears. Request Manuscript Collection 64-57 and confirm the relevant volume, index and any gaps.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.
