Selected repository locations for present-day orientation. Numbers match the research stops below. Select a marker to open its stop. Locations are approximate, not entrances or driving directions. Grouped numbers identify nearby repositories; use the address key for individual locations.
Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries ↗. Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads ↗. Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 1, 2026.
Collection and access sources reviewed November 1, 2026. These are selected research routes, not complete county holdings or completed name-level searches.
RESEARCH STOP 01
Letters, ledgers and working-life collections at the Rose Hawley Archives
Collection details
The Rose Hawley Archives includes personal correspondence, diaries, business papers, photographs, newspapers and family histories. The society also describes lumbering, maritime and railroad material, useful for investigating an employer or community beyond a surname index.
What to confirm
Collection-level descriptions do not establish employee files, passenger lists or a complete newspaper run. Ask what survives for the particular business, vessel or year.
RESEARCH STOP 02
Ludington newspaper notices and focused obituary requests
Collection details
The library directs researchers to digitized Ludington newspapers, including the Daily News, Chronicle, Record and Record-Appeal, and offers local obituary copy assistance.
What to confirm
The library’s older cemetery-index link is marked unavailable. Newspaper coverage can be incomplete, and a negative text search is not evidence that no notice exists.
RESEARCH STOP 03
Court case files and a Civil War veterans’ post
Collection details
The December 2024 county guide lists chancery case files, 1858–1940, criminal case files, 1859–1940, and law case files, 1858–1941, in RG 2024-82. It separately lists Ludington GAR Post 15 minutes, 1894–1921, in RG 63-37.
What to confirm
Calendars and case files have different date spans. Membership in a veterans’ organization and its surviving minutes do not replace a military service record.
RESEARCH STOP 04
Scottville, Free Soil and Fountain yearbooks by exact volume
Collection details
The society catalog identifies Scottville Taps volumes for 1919 and 1922; Free Soil High School volumes for 1951, 1959 and 1960; and Fountain eighth-grade Memories for 1953, 1954 and 1955. These are concrete school-and-year leads within the yearbook shelf inventory.
What to confirm
This is a holdings list, not a continuous run or an online scan collection. Other catalog records show older storage locations, so confirm retrieval and the physical volume before travel.
RESEARCH STOP 05
Women’s club minutes and attendance beyond vital records
Collection details
The Diaries and Ledgers catalog lists Ladies Literary Circle secretary reports, 1905–1913, and Brighten the Corner Club record books for 1929–1933, 1933–1935, 1953–1960, 1960–1970, 1970–1982 and 1982–1991. Such records may document participation, officers and community relationships.
What to confirm
Titles and spellings vary within the catalog. These separate entries do not prove an unbroken series or that a particular person appears. The contents have not been inspected page by page.
RESEARCH STOP 06
Property indexes and images reaching back to 1840
Collection details
The office states that its online indexes and document images extend from June 23, 1840 to the present. Search the recorded document as well as the index to investigate transfers, legal descriptions and parties to a transaction.
What to confirm
The county explicitly describes the index as a working index subject to errors and omissions. The early date is the office’s stated coverage, not a guarantee that all documents or names are complete.
Prepare one focused request
Give the repository the locality, year, collection and specific question. Ask about the relevant volume or folder, gaps, access restrictions and copying costs. Save the citation and record what you searched, including searches with no result.
Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Mason County records.
A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.
Sources reviewed November 1, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Open the yearbook-shelf inventory, retain the exact title and ask the Research Center to retrieve it for an appointment. Request a specific class, club or surname rather than assuming every pupil is indexed.
Keep in mind: Only listed volumes, not continuous.

The county offers Tapestry for occasional pay-as-you-go use and Laredo for subscribers. Check fees before purchase. For help with an early record or an index discrepancy, contact the office at 304 East Ludington Avenue, Suite 101, Ludington.
Keep in mind: Begins June 23, 1840 per office; working index with errors/omissions; pay services.
Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.
