PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

  • Stop 4: Grand Valley State University, Growing Community Project
See collection access instructions Not plotted.

Browse the university digital collection and open an individual item for its identifier, date and source. Use surnames, communities and farm or employer names; do not assume every item is transcribed or name-searchable. GVSU describes making digital copies of materials shared by community members in 2016. This does not establish university custody of the originals. For project background, GVSU directs researchers to El Centro Hispano de Oceana County or the Oceana County Historical and Genealogical Society. Check the individual item source and rights before requesting an original or reuse.

  • Stop 5: Archives of Michigan, Lansing
See collection access instructions Not plotted.

Contact the Archives one to two weeks before visiting Lansing. Give the record group, locality and years, and ask about restrictions and offsite retrieval.

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 1, 2026.

Collection and access sources reviewed November 1, 2026. These are selected research routes, not complete county holdings or completed name-level searches.

RESEARCH STOP 01

Pentwater council minutes, business ledgers and neighborhood files

Collection details

The Archival Attic holds subject files on local government, churches, businesses and community organizations. Its research list specifically names council meeting minutes, Sands ledgers and material on Pentwater’s oil boom, neighborhoods and civic groups.

What to confirm

The public list does not date the council minutes or ledgers. Ask for the surviving volumes and their creators before planning a name search.

RESEARCH STOP 02

Pentwater school yearbooks with stated gaps

Collection details

The museum lists selected Pentwater High School yearbooks, including 1916, 1921, 1940 and numerous later years, for onsite reading.

What to confirm

This is not a continuous run. Its list includes the 1960s as a range but also labels 1964 missing, so confirm the exact year.

RESEARCH STOP 03

Shelby family files and newspapers: check the room closure first

Collection details

The Local History Room lists Benona family genealogies, the Samuel Atherton collection, surname files, Shelby school yearbooks and county atlases for 1895 and 1913. Its microfilm inventory specifies the Oceana Herald, May 1888–June 2005, and Oceana Independent, 1880–1884. The page also links a digital newspaper archive.

What to confirm

The Local History Room currently carries a closure notice due to staffing changes. Treat that notice as overriding the older appointment wording below it. A newspaper date span does not guarantee every issue.

RESEARCH STOP 04

Family photographs and oral histories collected in Oceana

Collection details

The Oceana County Migrant Labor History Collection (DC-06) contains photographs, documents and recordings from Hart, Shelby and Walkerville. Examples include a 1869 homestead certificate, a 1943 U.S. Crop Corps certificate, farm-worker photographs around 1950 and later family photographs. Subjects include migration, farm labor, religion and cross-border family connections.

What to confirm

The collection was assembled in 2016, not created entirely in that year. Dates are item-specific and some are approximate. The contributors are not a representative census of local families; preserve the original captions and rights statements.

RESEARCH STOP 05

Poorhouse admissions and rural property evidence

Collection details

The county guide lists poorhouse inmate records, 1887–1948, and tax receipts, 1856–1878, in RG 63-42. Rural Property Inventory material, 1936–1942, is listed under RG 72-76.

What to confirm

Catalog spans do not establish complete coverage. An institutional admission should not be used alone to infer family relationships or the reason for hardship.

RESEARCH STOP 06

Original subdivision plats and the property chain

Collection details

The office preserves original subdivision plats and recorded property documents, with indexes and liber/page or instrument references. This is a route from an old address or legal description to the recorded transaction rather than only a modern parcel search.

What to confirm

The public overview does not specify the earliest online date. An absent online result does not establish that an older deed is missing.

RESEARCH STOP 07

Find the cemetery custodian before requesting burial evidence

Collection details

The county genealogy page links a township-organized cemetery directory with locations and sexton contacts. Use it to identify who can answer questions about a cemetery, then ask whether burial registers, lot purchases or plot cards survive.

What to confirm

The linked directory is labeled 2022. Confirm current custodian details with the township. It is a contact and location directory, not an index of burials or proof that a particular register survives.

Prepare one focused request

Give the repository the locality, year, collection and specific question. Ask about the relevant volume or folder, gaps, access restrictions and copying costs. Save the citation and record what you searched, including searches with no result.

OCEANA COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Oceana County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed November 1, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Yearbooks

Pentwater High School yearbooks

Listed years: 1916, 1921, 1940, 1946, 1950–1951, 1953–1963, 1965–1990, 1992–1999, 2001–2007, 2009–2010, 2012–2013, 2015, 2018–2019.

Source, access and coverage limits

Ask whether your yearbook is available during museum visiting hours. For reproduction or related school files, arrange assistance first.

Keep in mind: Selected volumes only. Exclude 1964 because page contradicts its own decade range.

Microfilm

Oceana Herald microfilm

Listed years: 1888–2005.

Source, access and coverage limits

Call 231-861-4565 before a research visit. The closure notice redirects researchers to Oceana County Historical and Genealogical Society in Hart. Use the digital newspaper link on the library’s Local History page while checking current research-room access.

Keep in mind: May 1888–June 2005; library inventory span, issue completeness unverified; room closed.

Microfilm

Oceana Independent microfilm

Listed years: 1880–1884.

Source, access and coverage limits

Call 231-861-4565 before a research visit. The closure notice redirects researchers to Oceana County Historical and Genealogical Society in Hart. Use the digital newspaper link on the library’s Local History page while checking current research-room access.

Keep in mind: Library inventory span, issue completeness unverified; room closed.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.
