PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

Map sources and limits

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 1, 2026.

Collection and access sources reviewed November 1, 2026. These are selected research routes, not complete county holdings or completed name-level searches.

RESEARCH STOP 01

Hoyt Library community papers and oral histories

Collection details

Ask specifically for Saginaw church, school and organization histories and historical papers, plus the Willie L. McKether Saginaw African-American Oral History Collection. The collection also includes diaries, scrapbooks, business ledgers and photographs. City directories begin in 1866 and newspaper microfilm in 1853; the online directory selection covers many volumes from 1866-1936, including pre-1890 East Saginaw and Saginaw City and some township listings.

What to confirm

Collection materials stay in the library and are not available through interlibrary loan. Copying permission depends on condition. The overview does not establish continuous coverage or item-level dates for school and organization papers.

RESEARCH STOP 02

Castle Museum photographs and neighborhood evidence

Collection details

The museum preserves photographs and documents alongside artifacts from throughout Saginaw County. Its Chronicling Our Past project gathers historical photographs from county residents. Useful online starting points include the 1857-1907 Saginaw Semi-Centennial Souvenir and Quality Homes, a late-1920s publication with photographs and descriptions of local houses. These can help connect an address or business to a documented neighborhood.

What to confirm

The website explicitly describes its online material as selected digitized items and exhibits. It does not provide a complete archival inventory or guarantee walk-in access to stored originals. Confirm research arrangements and reproduction permissions before traveling.

RESEARCH STOP 03

County-home residents and cemetery relocation leads

Collection details

The County Poor Farm page supplies indexes to the 1880 and 1910 county-home census and a separate reburial-record route. These can recover institutional residents who are hard to find in a household search.

What to confirm

These are derivative indexes, not a continuous admission register. A reburial date does not establish a death date.

RESEARCH STOP 04

Closed parishes, Catholic schools and sacramental-record custodians

Collection details

The archives describes parish and school history, photographs, organizational records and personal collections. Its sacramental-record guidance identifies how to locate records after parish closures or mergers.

What to confirm

Sacramental and student records have access restrictions. Published cutoff statements should not be treated as a promise of eligibility or as collection coverage; confirm the requested record with the custodian.

RESEARCH STOP 05

Frankenmuth and the neighboring Franconian colonies

Collection details

The association provides genealogy research assistance and maintains a research library alongside local artifacts. Its collection context includes settlement, businesses, religious life and the neighboring Franconian colonies.

What to confirm

Museum exhibit chronology is not a dated inventory of archival holdings. No complete surname index or continuous record range is claimed.

Prepare one focused request

Give the repository the locality, year, collection and specific question. Ask about the relevant volume or folder, gaps, access restrictions and copying costs. Save the citation and record what you searched, including searches with no result.

SAGINAW COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Saginaw County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed November 1, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

single-year index

County-home census index

Listed years: 1880, 1910.

Source, access and coverage limits

Open the year-specific index, then check the original census image. For a burial lead, follow the separate relocation list and record both the former and receiving cemetery.

Keep in mind: Not an admission register. These are derivative indexes, not a continuous admission register. A reburial date does not establish a death date.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.
