Selected repository locations for present-day orientation. Numbers match the research stops below. Select a marker to open its stop. Locations are approximate, not entrances or driving directions. Grouped numbers identify nearby repositories; use the address key for individual locations.
Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

Download the city-hosted report. Use the contents and street-address searches to locate a building, then follow the cited sources for ownership or occupancy.
County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries ↗. Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads ↗. Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 1, 2026.
Collection and access sources reviewed October 31, 2026. These are selected research routes, not complete county holdings or completed name-level searches.
RESEARCH STOP 01
Corunna, Byron and Bancroft school and local-history collections
Collection details
The library lists Corunna High School's Sphinx, 1912-2016; Byron Area High School's Echo, 1936-2016; and Bancroft High School's Echo for 1909 and 1913-1916. Its digital resources also identify the weekly Corunna Journal, 1887-1912, and Corunna News, 1934-1949. These are useful community-specific alternatives to searching only Owosso newspapers.
What to confirm
Published spans do not guarantee every volume or issue. The library describes digitization as ongoing. Its local-history page was search-indexed but direct retrieval returned 403 during verification, so individual digital-object availability was not fully tested.
RESEARCH STOP 02
Owosso and Durand newspapers plus surname leads
Collection details
Owosso holds Argus-Press microfilm beginning in 1862, plus incomplete Shiawassee County Journal runs, 1892-1996, and Owosso Times, 1881-1926. Durand holds the Durand Express, 1897-July 21, 2002. The online obituary index covers the Argus-Press from 1862 onward. A separate surname database combines cemetery information and submitted family-group-sheet data.
What to confirm
The surname database is no longer updated and includes people outside the county. Submitted family sheets require corroboration. An index hit is a finding aid, not the underlying obituary or original vital record; retrieve and cite the source.
RESEARCH STOP 03
Durand railroad correspondence, logs and blueprints
Collection details
The railroad library and archive hold original letters, logs, photographs, slides, blueprints and periodicals relating to Michigan railroads and wider rail history.
What to confirm
The public description does not promise individual personnel files or passenger lists. A 2026 museum update reports internal collection relocation during a lease dispute; confirm availability of the material before traveling.
RESEARCH STOP 04
Local vital-event clipping books after the genealogical society closed
Collection details
The former genealogical society reports that volunteers continue assembling bound local vital-event newspaper clippings, with books to be available at Owosso Library and the county historical society archives.
What to confirm
The genealogical society is disbanded. Its announcement is not a current volume-level inventory; verify dates and location before visiting. Use newspaper originals to check a clipping’s context.
RESEARCH STOP 05
Owosso historic-district surveys: connect a family address to a building
Collection details
The city’s August 2010 study includes block maps, building surveys, photographs, historical narratives and bibliographies. It can supply leads about a business or residence identified in a directory or deed.
What to confirm
2010 is the study date, not a range of surviving resident records. A building narrative does not establish everyone who lived or worked there.
RESEARCH STOP 06
Sciota Township school attendance and district meeting books
Collection details
Districts 1, 5, 6 and 8 attendance and scholarship records cover 1894–1910 and 1924–1962 (RG 97-259). District 2 meeting minutes cover 1850–1871 (RG 86-124).
What to confirm
The attendance spans are grouped holdings, not a promise that every district has every year. Meeting minutes document school governance rather than a complete pupil list.
Prepare one focused request
Give the repository the locality, year, collection and specific question. Ask about the relevant volume or folder, gaps, access restrictions and copying costs. Save the citation and record what you searched, including searches with no result.
Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Shiawassee County records.
A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.
Sources reviewed November 1, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.
Use the record-group numbers to request a finding aid and confirm district, year and access conditions with the Archives of Michigan in Lansing.
Keep in mind: The attendance spans are grouped holdings, not a promise that every district has every year. Meeting minutes document school governance rather than a complete pupil list.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.
