PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 3, 2026.

Collection and access sources reviewed October 31, 2026. These are selected research routes, not complete county holdings or completed name-level searches.

RESEARCH STOP 01

One-room schools organized around the township

Collection details

The society reports records, photographs and histories for 101 one-room schools, including student and teacher records, reunion material and class photographs described as 1850s–1960s. Its separate family-and-land collection lists town directories spanning 1871–2010.

What to confirm

The broad photo and directory spans do not establish annual coverage for any one school or town. Ask for a specific folder, named register or directory volume.

RESEARCH STOP 02

White Pigeon obituary scrapbooks and school annuals

Collection details

The History Room includes obituary scrapbooks from the 1920s–1950s, local newspaper microfilm reaching into the 1830s, school annuals and the five-volume Cemeteries of St. Joseph County. These are useful together when a death notice or school name needs local context.

What to confirm

The library describes most school volumes beginning in 1953, not an unbroken run. Broad scrapbook and newspaper dates are not exact holdings. Check the issue or volume before assuming a gap means no event.

RESEARCH STOP 03

Mendon school yearbooks with downloadable annuals

Collection details

The library provides individual PDF yearbooks from a collection described as most Mendon High School annuals, 1950–2017. It publishes a missing-year list, so this is a useful example of browsing by surviving volume instead of assuming continuous coverage.

What to confirm

The published missing years include 1963, 1966, 1969, 1972, 1974, 1979, 1981, 1983, 1985–1987, 1998–2007, 2010–2011 and 2013. Planner intervals exclude them; confirm additions with the library.

RESEARCH STOP 04

White Pigeon buildings in the 1939 rural property inventory

Collection details

The 1939 WPA inventory can include building diagrams, dimensions, construction dates, heating and lighting, owner names and legal descriptions. Browse the correct White Pigeon subdivision before looking for a house.

What to confirm

Illegible scans were omitted from the website. A missing page does not establish that a property was unassessed. Reported building dates need corroboration.

RESEARCH STOP 05

Local soldiers across Michigan and out-of-state units

Collection details

The military collection includes local soldiers in Michigan and other states’ regiments, service documentation and unit assignments, including connections to U.S. Colored Troops. Search by soldier and regiment rather than assuming Michigan residence means Michigan enlistment.

What to confirm

The public overview supplies no item-level dates or completeness statement. Confirm whether a result is an original, copy or compiled account; no numeric planner span is asserted.

Prepare one focused request

Give the repository the locality, year, collection and specific question. Ask about the relevant volume or folder, gaps, access restrictions and copying costs. Save the citation and record what you searched, including searches with no result.

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of St. Joseph County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed November 1, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Keep in mind: The broad photo and directory spans do not establish annual coverage for any one school or town. Ask for a specific folder, named register or directory volume.

Yearbook collection / published gaps preserved

Mendon school yearbooks with downloadable annuals

Listed years: 1950–1962, 1964–1965, 1967–1968, 1970–1971, 1973, 1975–1978, 1980, 1982, 1984, 1988–1997, 2008–2009, 2012, 2014–2017.

Collection inventory or finding aid

White Pigeon buildings in the 1939 rural property inventory

Listed years: 1939.

Source, access and coverage limits

Open the library MRPI menu and select the plat or addition. If the needed property is absent, ask the county historical society about the originals at 34 N. Main Street, Three Rivers.

Keep in mind: Illegible scans were omitted from the website. A missing page does not establish that a property was unassessed. Reported building dates need corroboration.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.
