Selected repository locations for present-day orientation. Numbers match the research stops below. Select a marker to open its stop. Locations are approximate, not entrances or driving directions. Grouped numbers identify nearby repositories; use the address key for individual locations.
Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries ↗. Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads ↗. Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 1, 2026.
Collection and access sources reviewed November 1, 2026. These are selected research routes, not complete county holdings or completed name-level searches.
RESEARCH STOP 01
Caro school, cemetery and newspaper collections
Collection details
The library provides digitized Caro High School yearbooks and advertises Tuscola County Advertiser searching for 1868-2021 and more. Its detailed, older holdings guide also identifies local and county vertical files, donated family histories, old telephone books and cemetery records for communities including Almer, Ellington, Elmwood, Kingston, Millington and Tuscola Township. Use these to move from a county-wide surname lead to a named school or burial locality.
What to confirm
The detailed PDF is dated October 8, 2013. It lists the entire Advertiser years 1872-1884 as missing then; do not treat the current broad digital date span as proof that every issue survives. Confirm present gaps and access rules.
RESEARCH STOP 02
Cass City country schools and living-history interviews
Collection details
The society's project list identifies Living History video interviews with longtime residents, reproduced Cass City High School graduation composites, and The Way It Was... Volume 2 - The Country Schools of the Cass City Area. It also lists The Cass City Area 1854-1995, online Cass City newspapers from 1881 onward, and online Elkland and Novesta cemetery records. These provide a particularly local route into school communities, memories and township burial places.
What to confirm
The project list does not supply an interview index, dates for every graduation composite or a completeness statement for newspaper issues. Ask which interviews, formats and school years are currently accessible. Treat recollections as testimony requiring corroboration.
RESEARCH STOP 03
Vassar newspapers, yearbooks and cemetery interments
Collection details
The history page links five Vassar-area newspaper titles across 1884–2019, explicitly not continuously, plus downloadable school yearbooks and a Vassar Cemetery interment list through November 1971.
What to confirm
Newspaper gaps are acknowledged. The cemetery list gives an ending date but no verified beginning date; do not treat it as every burial. Confirm the yearbook year needed.
RESEARCH STOP 04
Millington and Arbela one-room schools
Collection details
The society preserves local business, family, club and organizational history. Its one-room-school page includes school photographs and a 2019 interview program with former pupils and teachers.
What to confirm
Recollections and photographs are contextual evidence, not a verified attendance roll. The page does not provide a continuous school-record date span.
RESEARCH STOP 05
Mayville Monitor issues, 1884–2019
Collection details
The library offers a Mayville Monitor archive spanning 1884–2019 through period and issue folders. Small-town notices can connect a person to a school, club, business or neighboring household.
What to confirm
This is a broad archive span, not a claim that every issue survives or that all files have searchable OCR.
RESEARCH STOP 06
Land records before the online index begins
Collection details
The county states that its online index starts in December 1988, while older land records dating from 1852 are available in the office.
What to confirm
An empty online search cannot exclude an earlier deed. Confirm copying charges and office access before travel.
Prepare one focused request
Give the repository the locality, year, collection and specific question. Ask about the relevant volume or folder, gaps, access restrictions and copying costs. Save the citation and record what you searched, including searches with no result.
Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Tuscola County records.
A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.
Sources reviewed November 1, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Source, access and coverage limits
Use the history page to select the newspaper archive, yearbooks or cemetery PDF. Browse issues around an event as well as searching OCR. The library is at 520 West Huron Avenue, Vassar; call 989-823-2171 for local-history help.
Keep in mind: Five titles; explicitly not continuous. Newspaper gaps are acknowledged. The cemetery list gives an ending date but no verified beginning date; do not treat it as every burial. Confirm the yearbook year needed.
Open the Monitor page, choose the period and browse to the year and issue. Record the newspaper date and page when extracting a notice. Contact mdpldirector@gmail.com if a file or issue cannot be located.
Keep in mind: Missing issues and OCR availability not established. This is a broad archive span, not a claim that every issue survives or that all files have searchable OCR.
Use the official Land Record Search link and guest/public-record search for the online period. For an earlier deed, ask the office about grantor/grantee indexes and supply names, township and approximate date; keep the liber and page for a copy request.
Keep in mind: Not every record is online; use month-level distinction in display. An empty online search cannot exclude an earlier deed. Confirm copying charges and office access before travel.
Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.
