PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

  • Stop 1: Heritage Center Research Library and Archives

These stops may be online collections, shared repositories or locations not yet confirmed for mapping. Follow the collection’s access instructions.

Map sources and limits

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 3, 2026.

Sources checked October 23, 2026. Based on public institutional descriptions, not staff confirmation or an onsite visit. Confirm current access before traveling.

Bring one focused question.

Start with a name or place, approximate years, and the fact you want to establish. These are selected research starting points. A catalog, index, museum exhibit and original record provide different kinds of evidence.

STOP 01 / ESTATES / INSTITUTIONS / NEWSPAPERS

Heritage Center Research Library and Archives

Find original case files and records of the institutions that shaped a household.

What you can find

Collection lists include Clark County Infirmary inmate records, Knights of Pythias children’s home materials, hospital and nursing collections, and Springfield newspaper files. Probate Court identifies original estate files for 1818–1985 here.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Appointment required: archives@heritagecenter.us or 937-324-0657 ext. 234. Enter from South Fountain Avenue and check in on the second floor before the third-floor archives.

A question you can ask

Ask for the box list and access conditions for the relevant institution or probate case.

Keep in mind

A listed collection may have gaps or restrictions. Museum hours and archive access are different.

STOP 02 / CHURCHES / INDUSTRY / BIOGRAPHY

Clark County Public Library Digital Archives

Search people alongside workplaces, churches and neighborhoods.

What you can find

Digital collections include church directories and programs, African American community materials, manufacturing catalogs and the Clark County Biography and History Index.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Browse the digital archive remotely. Ask the library for the item behind a biography-index citation; map databases have separate location or card requirements.

A question you can ask

Request the full cited page, publication title and date rather than relying on an index entry.

Keep in mind

The biography index points into a broader collection; a name hit does not necessarily include a complete online scan.

STOP 03 / FAMILY FILES / MAD RIVER TOWNSHIP

Enon Community Historical Society

Take a village-level question to the Mike Barry Research Center.

What you can find

Collections include family histories, cemetery records, maps and surname files. The village also identifies historic photographs, area-event interviews and a photographic inventory of Mad River Township sites.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Check society hours and arrange special research in advance at 937-864-7080. The village lists seasonal closure in January and February.

A question you can ask

Ask about the family, school, cemetery or historic property rather than only a surname.

Keep in mind

Family contributions and recorded recollections need corroboration; confirm current seasonal access.

STOP 04 / VITAL RECORDS / MARRIAGES / NATURALIZATION

Clark County Probate Court

Follow the court’s own coverage and custody guide.

What you can find

The genealogy page lists births and deaths from 1867 through August 1908, marriage references from 1818, and probate naturalizations on microfilm for 1861–1904. Estate microfilm begins in 1818.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Contact the genealogy clerk at 937-521-1846 with names and a narrow date range. Ask which office holds the original.

A question you can ask

For early marriage compilations, request the underlying record and distinguish it from the later transcription.

Keep in mind

Indexes change format by period. Original early estate files are at the Historical Society; current fees and availability should be confirmed.

STOP 05 / UNIVERSITY / LUTHERAN / SPRINGFIELD

Wittenberg University Thomas Library Special Collections

Explore a school, religious or cultural connection.

What you can find

The library describes Springfield and Lutheran history holdings alongside university archives. Named collections include portrait artist Walter Tittle’s documents and images and children’s author Marion Renick’s published and unpublished work.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the library’s retrieval-request form before visiting. Materials are used inside Thomas Library and immediate retrieval is usually unavailable.

A question you can ask

Ask for a collection or catalog entry relevant to the person, institution or date.

Keep in mind

Closed stacks do not mean unrestricted browsing; confirm visitor eligibility and arrangements with library staff.

STOP 06 / LAND / NEIGHBORS

Clark County Recorder

Trace property through recorded transactions.

What you can find

The county’s public-records hub links land records and title searching. The official recorder portal offers grantor/grantee, document and date searches.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Begin at the county hub, then contact the recorder at 937-521-1705 if the needed period is absent online.

A question you can ask

Ask which historical index covers the year and request every page of the cited deed.

Keep in mind

A verified earliest online coverage date was not located. Modern search results and present-day parcel maps are not a complete historical chain of title.

Keep the evidence and the next step.

Save the repository, collection title, dates, box or volume and page, link, and what you searched. Follow an index entry to the full record. Keep uncertain identifications separate from established relationships.

CLARK COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Clark County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed October 26, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Property deeds

Listed years: 1818–1901.

Source, access and coverage limits

Microfilm

Wills

Listed years: 1819–1902.

Source, access and coverage limits

Visit Main Library Local History & Genealogy for microfilm scanning; bring a USB drive. Locate surnames using the index instructions on the library page.

Keep in mind: Library copies; do not confuse with wider Probate Court holdings.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.

COMMUNITY MEMORY

Community history groups and research leads

Local communities can help identify a place, photograph or possible source. These independently run groups are community leads, not catalogued archives or BWP partners. Keep the contributor, date, basis for an identification and original source together. Ask permission before republishing photographs or private contributions.

Facebook identities and visible access information checked October 25, 2026. Verification here concerns the group, not the accuracy of its members’ posts. No groups were joined and no messages were sent.

Township and city tax duplicates with year-specific gaps

Inventory identifies township volumes in 1846, 1848–1867 and 1869–1900, with changing city/county combinations. The inventory does not list 1847 or 1868.

How to access it

Appointment required: archives@heritagecenter.us or 937-324-0657 ext. 234. Enter from South Fountain Avenue and check in on the second floor before the third-floor archives.

Evidence limit: Choose the township and year from the inventory; a countywide span does not establish every locality or volume. Inventory dated 2008, so confirm current retrieval.

Class photographs keyed by school and dated item

School photograph boxes identify Springfield Township teachers in 1902, 1903 and 1904; Enon students in 1904–1905 and 1908–1909; German Township High School photographs in 1903; and a 1912 Copeland School group in Madison Township.

How to access it

Appointment required: archives@heritagecenter.us or 937-324-0657 ext. 234. Enter from South Fountain Avenue and check in on the second floor before the third-floor archives.

Evidence limit: These are selected photographs, not enrollment registers. Request the caption and original item identifier; no face-based identification is implied.

International Harvester employee cards

The finding aid indexes approximately 17,226 employee cards dated circa 1900–1920, recording employment dates, department, age and address.

How to access it

Appointment required: archives@heritagecenter.us or 937-324-0657 ext. 234. Enter from South Fountain Avenue and check in on the second floor before the third-floor archives.

Evidence limit: The posted PDF is a name index, not the full cards. Approximate collection dates and repeated names require checking the original card.

Pythian children’s home admission applications

PC006.026 describes applications from 1894 into the 1940s, with parents’ names, last residence and home lodge. Applicants came from across Ohio.

How to access it

Appointment required: archives@heritagecenter.us or 937-324-0657 ext. 234. Enter from South Fountain Avenue and check in on the second floor before the third-floor archives.

Evidence limit: Applicants are not necessarily admitted residents. Finding aid says processing continues; do not infer an exact final year or unrestricted personal-file access.

Community organizations behind a household

The archives list Colored Men’s Council minutes, programs and correspondence for 1954–1982, and Les Femmes Des Charities records for 1948–2007.

How to access it

Appointment required: archives@heritagecenter.us or 937-324-0657 ext. 234. Enter from South Fountain Avenue and check in on the second floor before the third-floor archives.

Evidence limit: Collection-level dates do not guarantee complete annual membership lists. Ask for box-level descriptions and access conditions.

How to search
Choose the township or city and exact volume from the inventory; read column headings and compare surviving adjacent years.

How to retrieve it
Ask Clark County Historical Society archives for the locality, year and tax duplicate volume listed in the 2008 inventory. Arrange an appointment and confirm retrieval.
