PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Bring one focused question.

Start with a name or place, approximate years, and the fact you want to establish. These are selected research starting points. A catalog, index, museum exhibit and original record provide different kinds of evidence.

STOP 01 / OBITUARIES / MANUSCRIPTS / PROPERTY PHOTOGRAPHS

Toledo Lucas County Public Library Local History and Genealogy

Search a street address as well as a surname.

What you can find

The library offers obituary lookups, newspaper microfilm and manuscript inventories. Its digital collections include cemetery records, directories and Lucas County Auditor block-card property photographs dated 1937–1965. Manuscript listings include the Murphy Mortuary Collection and Toledo Area Jewish History Project.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Start online, then request an appointment at Main Library, 325 Michigan Street, third floor. Contact Local.History@toledolibrary.org or 419-259-5233. Rare-book and manuscript access requires arrangements with staff.

A question you can ask

Which obituary, mortuary file or address photograph covers [person, street and dates], and can I obtain the complete item with its collection citation?

Keep in mind

An index hit is a lead to the underlying record. Not every holding is digitized; licensed databases and manuscript access have separate conditions.

STOP 02 / GLASS INDUSTRY / COMPANY PAPERS / PERSONAL COLLECTIONS

University of Toledo Ward M. Canaday Center

Follow the workplace into the archive.

What you can find

The business guide lists Libbey-Owens-Ford Glass Company Records, 1851–1991, including corporate records and newsletters; The Andersons records, 1936–2015, with photographs and scrapbooks; and Willys-Overland miscellaneous records, 1920s–1940s. Personal collections can provide a different view of factory and community life.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Collection use is by appointment only at Carlson Library, fifth floor. Email canadaycenter@utoledo.edu or call 419-530-4480. Review the collection inventory and provide its manuscript number before visiting.

A question you can ask

Does [company collection] contain employee newsletters, photographs or named personal papers for [person and years]?

Keep in mind

Corporate collections do not establish that complete payroll or personnel files survive. Ask about restrictions and copying before relying on a visit.

STOP 03 / VITAL RECORDS / NATURALIZATION / PROBATE MICROFILM

BGSU Center for Archival Collections: Lucas County records

Lucas County records can be waiting in Bowling Green.

What you can find

The county inventory lists probate birth records, 1867–1908; death records, 1868–1909; marriage records, 1835–1985; wills, 1835–1901; and naturalization material, including loose declarations from the 1850s–1890s. Individual series have different coverage.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the Lucas County inventory to identify the series and reel number. Contact cac@libanswers.bgsu.edu or 419-372-2411 and book research time at Jerome Library, fifth floor, Bowling Green.

A question you can ask

Which index and reel cover [event, name and year], and can you help locate the full entry rather than only its index?

Keep in mind

This repository is outside Lucas County. Inventory dates are not a guarantee that every individual record survives. Restricted material requires staff review; contemporary records may remain with the originating office.

STOP 04 / MARITIME HISTORY / SHIP PLANS / TRANSFERRED COLLECTIONS

National Museum of the Great Lakes and its research referral

Follow the collection when it moves.

What you can find

The museum states that the Clarence S. Metcalf Great Lakes Maritime Research Library, including photographs, postcards and primary sources, was donated to BGSU’s Historical Collections of the Great Lakes. The museum retains log books and ship plans stored offsite.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

For research, follow the museum’s referral to HCGL at 419-372-2441 or archive@bgsu.edu. Museum exhibits are at 1701 Front Street, Toledo; a museum visit is separate from archival access.

A question you can ask

Which vessel, shipping-company or port collection could document [person, ship and years], and where is that material now held?

Keep in mind

Do not assume the transferred library is available at the Toledo museum. Offsite plans and log books need advance arrangements. A ship history does not by itself establish an ancestor served aboard it.

STOP 05 / PARISH RECORDS / CLOSED CHURCHES / STAFF SEARCHES

Diocese of Toledo sacramental records archive

Find the parish before asking for the person.

What you can find

The archive describes microfilm of diocesan parish sacramental records from each parish’s inception through 2001, while serving as central custodian for closed churches. Operating parishes generally issue their own certificates.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Send the official request form and questions to Archives@toledodiocese.org. Include the church, approximate date and person; an old address or nearby intersection can help identify a parish. The posted genealogy-information fee is $20; confirm before paying.

A question you can ask

Which parish served [address and year], and is the requested baptism or marriage information obtainable through the parish or archive?

Keep in mind

There is no centralized name-only index. Registers are not open to general public inspection. Genealogy information and certified sacramental records have different rules; adoption-related information is restricted.

STOP 06 / POLICE BLOTTERS / YEARBOOKS / WORKHOUSE HISTORY

Toledo Police Museum research library

Look beyond the census for city encounters and working lives.

What you can find

The museum’s online research library links police blotters, annual reports, yearbooks for 1900, 1977 and 1994, standing orders for 1928–1955, detective scrapbooks, and House of Refuge and Correction and city workhouse material.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Browse the research-library links first. Ask toledopolicemuseum@gmail.com or 419-720-2485 about a specific volume or research visit. The museum is at 2201 Kenwood Boulevard, Toledo; confirm access before traveling.

A question you can ask

Does [dated blotter or annual report] include [name or address], and what page and context accompany the entry?

Keep in mind

Published links do not promise complete case files or continuous year coverage. A blotter allegation or institutional mention does not establish guilt; read the complete entry and seek the case outcome.

Keep the evidence and the next step.

Save the repository, collection title, dates, box or volume and page, link, and what you searched. Follow an index entry to the full record. Keep uncertain identifications separate from established relationships.

LUCAS COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Lucas County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed October 26, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Additional collection references

Official catalog descriptions checked October 25, 2026. These notes identify research routes, not completed name-level searches.

Hayes Presidential Library: Toledo State Hospital collection LH-422

This assembled collection includes institutional history, photographs, reports, cemetery research and copies of records from 1888–2010. Its inventory lists alphabetically arranged death-certificate copies and a cemetery map.

How to begin: Use the online folder inventory, then contact Hayes library reference with collection LH-422, the relevant folder, a name and dates. Ask about consultation, copies and any access restrictions.

What remains uncertain: This is a mixed collection of originals, copies and research assembled by a researcher. It is not a complete set of patient case files, and a name match needs independent identity checking.

Catalog span; completeness not established

Toledo pupil enrollment record

What it can tell you
A pupil record may document enrollment at a school, but the catalog title does not establish coverage of every Toledo child.

Selected listed years: 1863–1877

Date overlap is a lead, not a guarantee of complete coverage.

How to search, request and interpret this collection

Coverage and gaps
CAC lists one volume, 1863–1877, reference 8. School and pupil completeness are not established.

How to search
Inspect the volume’s school and date headings, indexes and entry fields. Search the relevant terms rather than relying on a countywide name search.

How to retrieve it

Coverage and gaps
Approximately 1852–1887, subdistricts 1–7, roll 5. A separate 1922 completion list on the roll is not included in this range.
